2020 Election Tag

Congress has long had an abysmal approval rating, and that has long included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).  We've written here at LI about the poor approval rating carried by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).  In March, Kemberlee blogged that even in New York, President Trump's approval rating is higher than Ocasio-Cortez's. It's little wonder that President Trump wants the AOC plus three "Squad" to be the face of the Democrat party.

Texas Republican Congressman Will Hurd announced Thursday night that he will not seek re-election, making Hurd the sixth Republican to announce retirement in a matter of weeks.

In April, former Senators Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and Joe Donnelly (D-IN) launched the One Country Project. They developed this project as an effort to help Democrats win back the Senate and White House in 2020.  The focus of the project is on rural America and its "forgotten" voters who turned out in droves for President Trump in 2016. They are now sounding the alarm and warning Democrats that winning the Senate in 2020 is an uphill battle.  And they're not wrong.

Politico has exposed the chaos within the Democratic Congressional Committee (DCCC) over the lack of diversity within the leadership ranks. Many members from the Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Hispanic Caucus have expressed frustration with Chairwoman Cheri Bustos. Now the DCCC, the primary fundraising arm for Democrats in Congress, has lost six of its tops aides.

A senior adviser for MoveOn.org named Karine Jean-Pierre warned that President Donald  Trump's presidency could lead to a civil war during an appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe on Monday. Is this an example of the incitement of violence the left loves to lecture about to the public?

Politico reported Monday morning that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), "the party's main election organ," has delved into chaos as Democratic lawmakers and staff demand changes to address the lack of diversity. Chairwoman Cheri Bustos (D-IL) returned to Washington, DC, during the recess as many Democrats have expressed anger and disgust to the media.

It doesn't get much more seedy and cynical than this.  The Democrat Super PAC Priorities USA is pouring millions into key battleground states to create political ads that look and sound like local news. The goal is to convince voters in the selected states—Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Wisconsin—that the Trump economy is not working for them.  By cleverly focusing on the economy and avoiding the "politics of the aggrieved," the PAC hopes to make headway in Trump country.

My initial reaction to Robert Mueller's congressional appearance was one of pity. He was a pathetic character on the stage, seemingly bewildered at times, mentally frail, and vulnerable as a witness. What a way to end a career and to be remembered by friend and foe alike.

Former Texas state senator Wendy Davis has continued her campaign to remain relevant. She announced on Monday her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives and challenge Republican Rep. Chip Roy. Davis shot into the national limelight a few years ago when she filibustered for 13 hours against a pro-life measure in the Texas senate. She tried to capitalize on this fame in a run for Texas governor but ultimately failed.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is not popular.  She's not popular in swing states, in her own state, nor even in her own district.  The illusion of popularity she has comes from her Twitter following and a currently enamored leftstream media.  But that kind of reputation is tenuous at best because that's the kind of faux popularity that can go as quickly as it comes (ask Wendy Davis and Sandra Fluke. And "Beto.").

Democrats can't stand Mitch McConnell. As Senate Majority Leader, he has been far too effective confirming judges and supporting other aspects of Trump's agenda for the left's liking. To the left and media's delight, retired Marine pilot Amy McGrath announced her candidacy to unseat McConnell in 2020. Yes, the same woman who ran unsuccessfully for the 6th Congressional district in 2018.

Senator Elizabeth Warren brought in a massive $19 million second quarter fundraising haul, passing up both Sanders and Harris and giving Biden a run for his money -- he raised $21.5 million. Fundraising hauls have to be weighed against the campaign's "burn rate" or how much of the money they're bringing in is being spent. Warren's campaign has dialed down the burn rate substantially compared to the first quarter.

During the 2016 campaign, Donald Trump famously put out a list of judges he would consider for the Supreme Court if he were elected. The list served both to assure conservatives and also to motivate Republican voters. It's widely agreed that the Supreme Court specifically, and the federal judiciary more generally, were key factors in Trump's victory.
