Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez, 27, hanged himself in his prison cell early Wednesday morning while serving a life sentence for a 2013 murder charge at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, MA. He committed suicide on the day his former team will visit the White House to commemorate their Super Bowl victory over the Atlanta Falcons in February.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) has announced he will not run for reelection. He currently serves as chairman for the House Oversight Committee. He wrote on Facebook:
After long consultation with my family and prayerful consideration, I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018.

Is Joy Reid going to rap DNC Chairman Tom Perez on the knuckles for failure to abide by her anointed nomenclature? As we noted this past weekend, MSNBC host Reid reprimanded Republican Katon Dawson for speaking of the "Democrat" party. She warned Dawson that "we're going to have a talking-to," she instructed him, "we say 'Democratic' on this show." Perez appeared on Morning Joe and CNN this morning to discuss yesterday's congressional primary in Georgia. And—ruh-roh—Perez twice spoke of the "Democrat" party! On Morning Joe, he said, "we're building a Democrat National Committee whose mission is not simply to elect the President of the United States." And later, on CNN, Perez said, "the Democrat party, we have to walk and chew gum."

An African-American man went on a shooting spree in Fresno, California, and randomly targeted four white men, killing three, before he was taken into custody.
The 39-year-old suspect, identified as Kori Ali Muhammad, is also suspected in the fatal shooting of a security guard outside a Motel 6 on Blackstone Avenue in central Fresno Thursday. He is facing four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder, Dyer said. He said Muhammad had expressed dislike of whites in Facebook posts; all of the victims were white. [Fresno Police Chief Jerry] Dyer called it a “random act of violence.”

From the Department of the Obvious comes a recent research paper confirming what we already knew, law professors as a group are very liberal. Paul Caron of Pepperdine Law School (aka TaxProf) highlights the research paper and commentary on it, bragging how BYU And Pepperdine Are The Most Ideologically Balanced Faculties Among The Top 50 Law Schools (2013). The study is title The Legal Academy's Ideological Uniformity (you can download it for free at the link). Here is the abstract:

You wouldn't know it from reading the Associated Press headline, but the latest terrorist attack which left three dead was perpetrated by a gunman who yelled, "Allahu Akbar" while being arrested. The AP isn't wrong that the suspect said "God is great", but why translate a common jihadi mantra? Thanks to 9/11 and the ensuing war on terror, ever American is familiar with the negative connotations of "Allahu Akbar".

Citizens of Georgia's sixth Congressional district flocked to the polls today to select a replacement for former Rep. Tom Price, who now serves as HHS Secretary in Trump's administration. Progressive Democrat, Jon Ossoff, hopes to pass the 50% threshold, which would allow him to avoid a runoff. Everyone is mandate-hunting. Democrats desperately hope to take home a runoff-less win to prove America's wholeheartedly rejecting Trump's agenda.

The National Lawyers Guild is a left-wing lawyer organization that, among other things, actively provides legal advocacy in support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. NLG also advocates against Israel on a variety of international issues. NLG is a "proud member" of the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation (since rebranded as U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights), the group that is so toxically anti-Israel that not a single congressman or congresswoman would sponsor its intended Capitol Hill event. NLG also has filed legal briefs and provide other legal support in support of convicted terrorist Rasmea Odeh, who recently agreed to plead guilty to immigration fraud. In July 2016, the National Lawyers Guild, Inc. and the National Lawyers Guild Foundation, Inc. (collectively, "NLG") were sued by Bibliotechnical Athenaeum, an Israeli company.

President Trump is set to sign a "Buy American, Hire American" Executive Order today that is expected to direct federal agencies to buy American when possible and to refocus the H-1B visa program to discourage companies from replacing American workers with lower paid foreign workers.  Rather than a new set of rules, the Executive Order seeks to ensure enforcement of decades old existing laws and rules that have gone unenforced. In yesterday's White House background briefing, a senior administration official explained that the rules for buy American and hire American have been abused and "enormously diluted over time" due to waivers and exemptions.  President Trump's executive order is intended to rectify this problem.

The book Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign has revealed candid details about Hillary Clinton's campaign the months leading up to election night and how she dealt with the massive loss to President Donald Trump. Poll after poll showed Hillary with the lead, which rightly had everyone thinking she would win on November 8. But something happened. The quiet Trump supporters came out of the woodwork and handed her a devastating loss. Authors Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes wrote that the defeat forced Hillary to do two things she never thought would happen: Congratulate Trump and apologize to former President Barack Obama.

Marwan Barghouti, mastermind of much of the violence of the Second Intifada, got away relatively easy. He "only" was sentenced to 5 life sentences for murder, plus 40 years for running a terrorist organization. He was charged with much more, but in his public civilian court trial, the Israeli judge only found him guilty of charges for which there was definitive proof. You can read the judicial finding of guilt here. But Marwan Barghouti isn't just a murderer, he's also a liar.

As France heads to the first round of presidential elections on Sunday, Front National's candidate Marine Le Pen vows to put an end to the Open Borders Policy for illegal migrants. "Mass immigration is not an opportunity for France, it's a tragedy for France," Le Pen told her supporters. "The French sometimes have fewer rights than foreigners -- even illegal ones." Defending her campaign promise to take France out of the European Union, Le Pen said, "France has the right to regain its national sovereignty, its freedom to decide for itself."

British Prime Minister Theresa May stunned many British politicians on Tuesday morning when she called for a snap election on June 8 as a way to help her negotiate through the Brexit process with the European Union. May had said before that she would not hold a general election, but opposition from within the government over Brexit negotiations forced her hand. The London Times reported:
“The country is coming together but Westminster is not,” she said.

I have a sad update for those Legal Insurrection fans who were hoping that California's move to secede from the union would be successful. Supporters of the #CalExit ballot measure officially ended their efforts this week.
The drive to make the nation's most populous state its own country, with what would be the world's sixth-largest economy, has drawn extra interest after last year's election of Republican Donald Trump as president.
