2016 Democratic Primary Tag

Earlier this week, protesters rallied outside of the Democratic National Headquarters in Washington, DC to oppose the rules that DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz has imposed on Democratic primary candidates. What's the controversy? Most of the opposition boils down to the limited number of debates candidates will have the opportunity to participate in. In addition to scheduling just 6 officially-sanctioned debates, the DNC (via DWS) has limited the potential for rogue forums by creating a new rule: if a Democrat chooses to participate in a non-sanctioned debate, they’ll be banned from future sanctioned ones. The candidates aren't happy; even some of DWS's DNC colleagues aren't happy (DNC Vice Chairs Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D., Hawaii) and R.T. Rybak released a joint statement asking DWS to revoke the sanctioned debates only-rule); and now, Democratic heavy-hitter Nancy Pelosi has weighed in against DWS's mandate. From the LA Times:

A Clinton campaign town hall event in Concord, New Hampshire held Thursday night was virtually empty. Fox News' Ed Henry attended the event and tweeted photos that showed what appeared to be more people on the stage than in attendance.

Not only are Hillary's favorability ratings tanking, but her email woes don't appear to be dissipating anytime soon. Here's the latest:

"Email" defines Hillary Clinton

A Gallup word cloud published Wednesday is probably not what Mrs. Clinton was hoping to see.
Hillary Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, has offered specific positions on a variety of issues while campaigning. But when Gallup recently asked Americans to say what they recall reading or hearing about her, one word -- "email" -- drowned out everything else.

Today, advocacy group #AllowDebate will occupy the steps of the Democratic National Committee headquarters and perpetuate a little Democrat-on-Democrat violence over what many believe are unfair and unreasonable restrictions on the Democratic primary debate schedule. From the Weekly Standard:
"Hundreds of protesters will rally at DNC headquarters on Wednesday afternoon to demand that DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz allow Democratic presidential candidates to debate more than 6 times. There were 26 Democratic primary debates in the 2008 campaign, including 11 before September 14th, 2007," says an email from the organizing group #AllowDebate. Says the group's founder, “DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz is unilaterally defying the will of Democratic voters, Presidential candidates, and the DNC’s own Vice-Chairs. ... Her dictatorial suppression of free and open debate is an attack on the democratic process.”
Wasserman Schultz has repeatedly come under fire from both candidates and activists over this cycle's debate rules. In addition to scheduling just 6 officially-sanctioned debates, the DNC (via DWS) has limited the potential for rogue forums by creating a new rule: if a Democrat chooses to participate in a non-sanctioned debate, they’ll be banned from future sanctioned ones.

Hillary Clinton has a big problem. Although she's still favored to win the Democratic nomination in 2016, her favorability ratings have sunk to levels unseen since 2008. New York Times pollster Nate Cohn reported:
Signs of Hillary Clinton’s Troubles, in Charts Hillary Rodham Clinton was inevitably going to lose some of her aura once she started campaigning. The high favorability ratings she earned as secretary of state simply weren’t sustainable. But over the last two months, the steady and expected erosion of her ratings has surprisingly accelerated. Her ratings are now lower than they were in 2007 or 2008, or at any point in her political career.
Look at this devastating chart:

Lost but not totally forgotten in the EmailGate debacle is the Clinton family's questionable relationships with foreign powers. In particular, foreign powers whose interests are detrimental to the national security of the United States. Via investigation into the Clinton Foundation, some of these unsavory alliances have been unearthed for public viewing. A sampling: There was the time a Colombian oil company magically received a trade agreement Mrs. Clinton opposed while running for president in 2008. The trade agreement was reached immediately following a generous donation to the Clinton Foundation. Of course this happened while Mrs. Clinton was Secretary of State. Also happening while Mrs. Clinton was "Secretary Clinton" -- that whole incestuous, Russian uranium deal:
The NYT’s latest exposé into the sordid world of the Clinton family suggests a direct connection between the Clinton Foundation, Russian donations (that were not publicly disclosed), and the Russian acquisition of Uranium One. The events transpired while Mrs. Clinton was serving as Secretary of State.
Oh yes, and how can we forget the weapons deal with the Saudis:

If you're running for president, sooner or later you're going to have to get used to the idea of the ambush interview---especially if you're spending any time at all in either chamber of Congress. At this point in the cycle, many candidates are jockeying for media attention wherever and whenever they can get it, even if it means dipping a toe into unfriendly waters. A hostile interview can be intimidating, but the payoff is worth the pain if you keep it together and "win the debate." Fox News pundit Bill O'Reilly is known for interviews that get a little hairy---which may be why Dem presidential candidate and US Senator Bernie Sanders has been avoiding invitations to come on the O'Reilly Factor like the plague. Bill finally got tired of being ignored, and sent ambush journalist Jesse Watters to track down the Senator for a pickup interview. It didn't go so well. Give it a watch:

David Brock, the founder of the far left Media Matters for America, has taken on the unenviable role of Hillary Clinton defender in this election cycle. Yesterday, he appeared on MSNBC's Morning Joe program and proved that he's in deep denial over Hillary Clinton's scandals and the way they're being perceived by the American people. David Rutz of the Washington Free Beacon:
Brock Gets Hammered by Morning Joe Trying to Spin Clinton’s Email Conduct Media Matters founder and Hillary Clinton flack David Brock struggled to defend the conduct of his boss under aggressive questioning from MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough Monday. Brock, the former self-described “right-wing hitman” who underwent a massive political transformation in the late 1990s and became one of the Clintons’ most rabid defenders, appeared on Morning Joe to promote his new book blasting the New York Times and other “perceived enemies” he insists are out to destroy the Clintons. The hot topic, of course, was Clinton’s private email server, another “phony scandal” as Brock put it, that has sunk Clinton’s numbers on honesty and trustworthiness. “Are all the scandals involving the Clintons, quote, ‘fake scandals’”? Scarborough asked.

According to a series of recent (and not-so-recent) polls, Hillary's support among women has been declining quite steadily as her unfavorables rise.  This is particularly true of the support of Democratic women and has the folks over at the Daily Beast scratching their heads.  Patricia Murphy writes:
Earlier this year Hillary Clinton seemed to have the female vote locked down, so why is she now having to work so hard to convince them to support with her campaign?
The Clinton campaign went into overdrive this week to shore up support among voters most assumed would have been locked in as Clinton backers from the start—Democratic women. From last Saturday’s kickoff of “New Hampshire Women for Hillary,” to Clinton’s appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show last Thursday where she pitched, “If you vote for somebody on the merits, one of my merits is that I’m a woman,” to an online campaign store newly stocked with lady-friendly merch (official “Women’s Rights are Human Rights” tote, anyone?) the not-at-all subtle message is this: Hey ladies, vote for Hillary!

We are in the midst of another Operation Stop Hillary. And it's working. Hillary's negatives are up, her trustworthiness down. The first word that comes to mind is Liar, followed closely by dishonest. Joe Biden is the opposite. Sure, he's a gaffe-monster. He's a little goofy. He's been wrong more than just about anybody on just about everything. He's a bloviator. And he can be nasty, for example when he accused Republicans of wanting to put blacks back in chains. But he has something Hillary will never have. Believability. This interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert shows it.

It's better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission. That's the attitude of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign---and they're not just talking about using their considerable muscle to gain an advantage. They're talking about violating the law. A new video from James O'Keefe's Project Veritas purports to show Clinton campaign staffers in Las Vegas openly bragging about the ways that they have skirted Nevada election laws while registering voters. Watch:

James Bond is a socialist sympathizer? Who knew? Current James Bond leading man Daniel Craig gave almost $50,000 to a shady pro-Bernie Sanders SuperPAC. The English actor is a U.S. resident, so his political donations to American candidates and PACs are perfectly legal. According to a report from the Center for Public Integrity, Craig confirmed he, "donated nearly $50,000 this summer to Americans Socially United, an organization purporting to support Sanders’ upstart presidential campaign."
What Craig apparently didn’t know: The super PAC’s founder, Cary Lee Peterson, has routinely run afoul of creditors and the law — including stiffing one of the nation’s largest news companies out of a six-figure sum. Sanders himself has disavowed super PACs, which have no contribution limits, and his campaign has demanded that Peterson curtail his operation. But there is little the U.S. senator from Vermont can actually do to stop passionate supporters — or opportunists — from launching such groups.

Democrats are unhappy with the way their party officials are handling this election cycle---and the party doesn't mind one bit. Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz has come under fire repeatedly for the way she's managing her flock of potential presidential candidates. In addition to sanctioning just six official debates, DWS has limited the potential for rogue forums by creating a new rule: if a Democrat chooses to participate in a non-sanctioned debate, they'll be banned from future sanctioned ones. During a media breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, she doubled down on the new rules:
“We’re not changing the process. We’re having six debates,” said Wasserman Schultz, who has been under fire from several Democratic presidential candidates over the debates. “The candidates will be uninvited from subsequent debates if they accept an invitation to anything outside of the six sanctioned debates.”

Team Hillary has a sad because the New York Times published articles that were critical of the embattled former Secretary of State. Clinton's response? Declare war on the NYT and any other publication that publishes content portraying Mrs. Clinton in a negative light, naturally. Heaven forbid a newspaper do their one and only job. Never mind that the NYT endorsed Hillary over Barack in 2008, or that they've largely danced around the whole FBI investigation thing. WAR. The best part? That while Team Hillary is launching mortars at "hostile" press, Mrs. Clinton is publicly declaring she's infinitely and sincerely transparent. Tuesday, the Weekly Standard noted how the NYT recent editorial shakeup followed complaints from the Hillary Clinton Fan Club.
Ever since the start of the campaign, Hillary Clinton boosters have been complaining about coverage of their candidate in the New York Times. And today the paper announced that Washington bureau chief Carolyn Ryan is being demoted -- or shifting roles! -- at the paper. As the Huffington Post outlines, "The New York Times announced Tuesday that Elisabeth Bumiller, a veteran reporter and current Washington editor, will take over as Washington bureau chief -- one of the paper’s most prestigious posts. Carolyn Ryan, who was named bureau chief in late 2013, will transition to a new role as senior editor for politics." Hillary boosters are publicly connecting what they see as bad coverage with Ryan's new role at the paper.

When it comes to Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, it's like we're watching a replay of what happened in 2008. In 2008, Hillary Clinton was the presumptive Democrat nominee until the party's base cast her aside for a little known senator who was seen as an outsider with a more progressive resume. In 2016, the same scenario is playing out in the popularity of Bernie Sanders. In 2008, Hillary cried. This week, Hillary cried again. In 2008, Hillary seemed too focus-grouped and stale. Now, we're being told in advance that Hillary is going to be more spontaneous. Conservative author and columnist Mark Steyn made the same point on Hannity last night, saying that she's tone deaf and that she is once again defeating herself:
Steyn Rips Hillary's 'Tone Deaf,' 'Slow-Motion Train Wreck' Campaign Mark Steyn said on "Hannity" tonight that Hillary Clinton's "train wreck" presidential campaign is in trouble, and there is no doubt that she committed a crime with her private server and email.

Hillary. Bernie. O'Malley? Biden! Right now, the Democratic field feels both random and predictable: we have Hillary Clinton, who should be the anointed one; Bernie Sanders, whose numbers defy reason; and Joe Biden, who everyone laughs at but no one counts out. Martin O'Malley, Jim Webb, and a few others round out the top tier, but don't get near the attention that Clinton or Sanders are able to pull. If Hillary or Bernie get the nod, then, who steps into the VP slot? That person could come from the current field---or he could come from inside agency land, with a little help from his twin brother. Julian Castro and his identical twin brother Joaquin have been the objects of the left's affection since Julian stole the show at the last Democratic Convention, and now they're making their way toward the front lines of the progressives' full court press against the GOP's high-profile presidential bench. In 2014, President Obama appointed former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to the post of Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. The appointment was less of a policy move and more of a tucking-away for safekeeping; Julian is being groomed, and many Democratic operatives believe he belongs in the #2 slot on the ticket:
