Well, there is joy in Mudville, because George Zimmerman has another legal problem. The details are murky and unclear, but that's not stopping the "I told you so" reaction, as if a new problem proves guilt on a past problem. It really is a horror show to watch (Twitter feed embedded at bottom of post, view at your own caution)(added -- more "reliable" news feed now at bottom as well). Here's the most recent Orlando Sentinel update as of 3:51 p.m., click the story link for further updates, George Zimmerman in custody, police investigate 'possible domestic battery':
George Zimmerman, the former Neighborhood Watch volunteer acquitted of murder in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, is under investigation this afternoon after his wife told police that he'd threatened her family, police confirmed. Police are investigating a "possible domestic battery" involving Zimmerman on Sprucewood Road, Lake Mary police Officer Zach Hudson said this afternoon. About 3:40 p.m., Hudson said that Zimmerman was no longer detained and was not in custody. The police spokesman said Zimmerman has been cooperating with police. According to Lake Mary police Chief Steve Bracknell, Zimmerman's wife Shellie Zimmerman called police and said that her husband had made threats to her family "with his hand on his gun." She also alleged that George Zimmerman had battered her father, David Dean, Bracknell said. The police chief said about 3:30 p.m. Shellie Zimmerman and her father were consulting with their attorney to decide whether to give a sworn statement or press charges. Hudson said the investigation is in its early stages, and it was unclear whether Zimmerman or anyone would be arrested. No significant injuries were suffered in the incident, Hudson said.

How convenient. How abusive of the memory of those who fell, a clear ploy to gain political advantage from the significance of that date. I have a new post up at American Thinker entitled "Obama and Syria: Words versus Deeds": In trying to puzzle out what might be going on with President Obama's muddled, non-strategic, and fundamentally "unserious" approach to Syria, it helps to remember that Obama believes that words...

The threat of possible military action, as attenuated as Congressional authorization now seems, has led to what may be the endgame. John Kerry floated the idea of Syria turning over its chemical weapons or else, the Russians seized on the idea, and Syria in principle has...

NAACP President Ben Jealous says he is stepping down at the end of the year to spend time with his family and pursue a career in teaching. From ABC News:

NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Jealous, who is credited with boosting finances at the nation's largest civil rights organization and helping to stabilize it, said Sunday that he plans to step down at the end of the year.

The Baltimore-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said that its rosters of online activists and donors have grown tremendously during his five-year tenure. Jealous was the group's youngest-ever leader when he was hired as its president at age 35 in 2008.

In a written statement Sunday, Jealous, now 40, said he plans to pursue teaching at a university and wants to spend time with his young family.

Jealous most recently pressed for the DoJ to pursue a civil rights case against George Zimmerman. Of course, Tea Party members will also remember Jealous most for his 2010 speech when he angrily demanded that the Tea Party expel its “bigots and racists,” as the NAACP passed a resolution condemning the Tea Party as racist.
My message to the Tea Party is this: you must expel the bigots and racists in your ranks or take full responsibility for all of their actions. We will no longer allow you to hide like cowards behind signs that say, "lynch our President" or anyone else.
During his speech, Jealous had also cited in part as proof of the so-called racism the phantom N-word incident that supposedly occurred outside the Capitol steps in DC at the height of the health care debate.  This despite the fact numerous videos surfaced that showed no signs of truth to claims of use of the n-word and intentional spitting on a congressman.  As more began to question the validity of the accusations, even some of the MSM began to back away from such strong charges and tried to change the direction of the narrative. Jealous and his NAACP followed with a campaign to further smear the Tea Party as racist when it teamed with other left wing groups to launch TeaPartyTracker.org, a campaign based on the same model as Southern Poverty Law Center’s HateWatch blog.  It was a short lived one, as Professor Jacobson noted at the time:

This past Sunday, September 1, saw the release of a remarkable bit of security footage from a Marionville, MO liquor store. In it, store clerk (and military veteran) Jon Alexander is behind the counter when he is approached by a would-be robber -- a robber who came very close to winning the Darwin Award.

The Defensive Use of Force, as Captured on Video

The robber had initially set off Alexander’s “alarm” when he had to be told to take his cigarette out of the “no smoking” establishment. The security footage later shows the robber step up to the counter with his right-hand held close to and just behind his hip. He seems to hesitate a moment in bringing the gun up, then raises it towards Alexander. Alexander would later testify that the man demanded, “You need to give me all your money.” [caption id="attachment_64286" align="alignnone" width="500"]Screen Shot 2013-09-08 at 2.46.58 PM Veteran Jon Alexander confronts would-be robber with licensed handgun[/caption] The muzzle may or may not have been raised sufficiently to cover Alexander’s body exposed above the counter, the video angle makes this difficult to determine, but in any case, a round fired at that angle into the counter would almost certainly have ricocheted up to strike Alexander. Alexander extends his left hand and places it above the robber’s gun, in a position to depress it downwards. The robber momentarily lowers the gun back to his side, but maintains his aggressive, forward-leaning stance in Alexander’s face. [caption id="attachment_64287" align="alignnone" width="500"]Screen Shot 2013-09-08 at 2.33.15 PM Veteran Jon Alexander confronts would-be robber with licensed handgun[/caption] The tables turn decisively as Alexander simultaneously reaches behind his right hip and draws his own 9mm pistol from what appears to be a Blackhawk Serpa holster (a common US military issue holster, and an unsurprising choice for a veteran). Alexander directs his muzzle roughly at the robber’s larynx from a distance of only inches, while maintaining his left hand in a position to deflect an attempt by the robber to raise his own handgun. Alexander says he followed this action by informing the robber that “you need to get out of here before I blow your head off.”

While in Jerusalem I stayed at the Mamilla Hotel, just above the open-air Mamilla Mall, near the Jaffa Gate to the Old City. What struck me about it was how Arabs and Jews intermingled freely -- it was a very mixed crowd and a seeming respite from my near miss with stone throwing in East Jerusalem. Here's a photo I took my first night in Jerusalem in late July: [caption id="attachment_64278" align="alignnone" width="553"]Mamilla Mall (Mamilla Mall, Jerusalem)[/caption] It's also where I met Carl in Jerusalem for drinks. Back in 2011, when flash mobs were the rage, this dance took place (h/t Quite Normal): But the coexistence was an illusion. On September 1 Israeli authorities revealed the arrest of two East Jerusalem Arabs who were part of a Hamas cell in a plot to explode a bomb at the Mamilla Mall, where they worked, via Times of Israel:

In an effort to deter the US from attacking Syria, the “International Human Shields” movement is eying to locate civilians to Damascus from across the globe, including Britain and the US, reports the Daily Telegraph. Even as residents are evacuating Syria, hundreds of activists are volunteering to be placed in harm’s way against possible air strikes, despite the dangerous nature of the protest. One such activist is Andrew, a 33 year-old Canadian pianist. “I don’t want to see Syria turn into another Libya,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “If I had a hand big enough to squash the US tanks then I would. Democracy is America’s deadliest export, they use it as an excuse to destroy countries.” Franklin Lamb, a lawyer appointed as the legal adviser for the US-based group, stated in a recent op-ed that he is frequently asked how Obama can ignore the reluctance of American people to become militarily involved in Syria. “What kind of Democracy do you have that your President can ignore the will of the American public?”, he is asked by Syrians. Lamb describes how the goal is to bring “1000 Americans and thousands of others”  to potential bomb sites in Syria during the next ten days, reminding Lamb of "one of the International Solidarity Movement international volunteer’s efforts in Occupied Palestine in order to try to protect homes of Palestinians from Government bulldozing". According to Lamb, an objective of the movement is to ensure a message of solidarity among the international community by sending “ideally at least one representative from every UN Member State.” However, one of the major obstacles to fulfilling this goal will be convincing the Syrian government to allow the activists to enter the country. If allowed in the country, activists are to be sent to sites deemed critical to the survival of the Syrian people which include, “power plants, water treatment facilities, bomb shelters (if they exist), civilian communications sites, food storage sites.” Meanwhile, Syria prepares for US attacks, positioning troops in residential neighborhoods and warning residents to move out, according to the Wall Street Journal. Another group of human shields, called “Over Our Dead Bodies, has already been organized by some Damascenes. Reuters has footage of the group, which has allegedly received support from all over the globe, in the video below.
