Obama Cable Box Executive Order — Benevolent tip of lame-duck regulatory iceberg

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 17, 2016 10 Comments
Obama signed an Executive Order (EO) on Friday that affects American businesses and the free market (what's left of it, anyway). Obama has ordered the FCC to open up set-top cable boxes to competition, and he more broadly ordered executive agencies to search for ways that they can ensure competition among free market businesses and corporations. The set-top box order centers on the way that cable companies lease these boxes to consumers, charging a monthly fee for their use.  Harkening back to the days when people had to rent phones from the telephone company, the order intends to correct the problem as was done in telephone case. The White House writes:
That’s why today the President announced that his Administration is calling on the FCC to open up set-top cable boxes to competition. This will allow for companies to create new, innovative, higher-quality, lower-cost products. Instead of spending nearly $1,000 over four years to lease a set of behind-the-times boxes, American families will have options to own a device for much less money that will integrate everything they want — including their cable or satellite content, as well as online streaming apps — in one, easier-to-use gadget.
On its face, this doesn't seem to be a problem and may even be a good idea for those still using cable, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Paris: Vicious Migrant Camp Brawl Caught on Video

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 17, 2016 12 Comments
On Saturday, riot police were called to an unofficial migrant camp at a Paris metro (subway) station due to a violent street brawl that was transpiring amongst the migrants living there. The Daily Mail reports:
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve had earlier announced the removal of the camp in a joint statement with Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, but the migrants returned with makeshift mattresses two weeks later.

. . . .  The violence erupted underneath the tracks when a group of men threw objects at the migrants, most of whom are thought to come from Africa and the Middle East.

. . . .  Riot police used tear gas to disperse the crowd and arrested a drunk man who is thought to have thrown the first missile which sparked the chaos, Le Parisien reported.

The police are said to have been pelted with bottles and debris when they arrived at the scene of the fight between the homeless migrants and a so called 'anti crime brigade' from Stalingrad, which lies in the 19th arrondissement of Paris.

The Jerusalem Post reports on the incident:

House passes bill barring FCC from regulating internet rates

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 17, 2016 3 Comments
Controlling the internet is a goal of the progressive left, including the White House, and we've covered one of their angles to that end, net neutrality, here at LI.  On Friday, the House passed a bill that would prohibit the FCC from "setting or setting or reviewing the rates that companies charge for internet service." The Hill reports:
The House on Friday passed a bill to ban the Federal Communications Commission from setting or reviewing the rates that companies charge for internet service. The largely party-line vote is a win for Republicans, who have pushed for the past year to nibble away at the FCC’s internet regulations, which are currently being challenged in federal court.
Obama has indicated that he will veto this bill restraining the FCC's ability to regulate the internet or to set rates (and otherwise pick winners and losers), so as the Hill reports, this bill will not be enacted this year.
The stand-alone bill has no real chance of of being enacted this year with a White House veto threat hanging over it. The FCC says it has no intention of setting the price of internet service under its net neutrality rules, but Democrats argue the bill approved Friday is too expansive.

Saudi Arabia Threatens U. S. Economy If Congress Passes 9/11 Bill

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 17, 2016 18 Comments
Last week, CBS aired a special report on the missing or redacted 28 pages of the 9/11 Commission's report that might implicate Saudi Arabia in the 9/11 attacks.  In the CBS report, former Senator and former Florida Governor Bob Graham (D-FL) restated his long-held view that these 28 pages should be declassified. From the transcript of the CBS report entitled "28 Pages":
. . . [T]he White House and intelligence officials are reviewing whether to declassify one of the country's most sensitive documents -- known as the "28 pages." They have to do with 9/11 and the possible existence of a Saudi support network for the hijackers while they were in the U.S. For 13 years, the 28 pages have been locked away in a secret vault. Only a small group of people have ever seen them. Tonight, you will hear from some of the people who have read them and believe, along with the families of 9/11 victims that they should be declassified. Bob Graham: I think it is implausible to believe that 19 people, most of whom didn't speak English, most of whom had never been in the United States before, many of whom didn't have a high school education-- could've carried out such a complicated task without some support from within the United States.
Graham, who has seen the 28 pages and has been trying to get the pages declassified since 2003, has to be careful about what he says, but he is confident that there is connection.

22 women to join Army’s infantry, armor branches as officers

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 16, 2016 20 Comments
Here at LI, we've been covering the move to place women in combat positions within the military.  Despite studies that have concluded that this is a bad idea, the military is moving forward.  To that end, the Army has approved  22 female officers for combat training. USA Today reports:
The Army announced Friday the first 22 women to be commissioned as infantry and armor officers under new rules that open all ground combat jobs to females this year. The move is a major step toward integrating women into so-called ground combat jobs, placing them in leadership roles in occupations that were never open to them.
In a move called "pretty historic" by acting Army Secretary Patrick Murphy, the women will eventually serve as infantry or armor officers.

Germany: Syrian Refugee Admits to Trying to Frame Far Right for His Crimes

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 12, 2016 8 Comments
We've been covering the refugee crisis in Germany and throughout Europe  Not only is Germany contending with refugee crime waves and push back from German citizens, but now they may have some trouble determining, at least initially, who has done what.  Much like the "fake hate" hoaxes perpetrated in America, particularly on college campuses, a Syrian refugee has admitted to German police that he tried to frame neo-Nazis for his crimes. NBC reports:
A Syrian refugee set a shelter for migrants where he was living ablaze and tried to frame neo-Nazis by painting swastikas on its walls, according to authorities in Germany.

Panama Papers: Cameron Admits He “Could Have Handled It Better”

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 11, 2016 2 Comments
Last week, Kemberlee covered the Panama Papers scandal that is rocking much of the world, and there certainly has been a lot of buzz about the fact that few Americans, maybe only one, appear to have taken part in the tax evasion scheme run out of Panama.  In the wake of the revelations, Iceland's Prime Minister has resigned, and there are calls for David Cameron to do the same. The Guardian reports:
After a torrid week, which ended with calls from MPs for his resignation, Cameron aimed to move the focus to his party’s record as he launched the Conservative campaign for next month’s local elections. . . . . The prime minister was accused of misleading the public after he issued several statements before finally admitting he had benefited from his late father’s offshore investment fund Blairmore. The details of the fund were contained in documents leaked from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca.

In Indiana, McConnell Allies Move to Block “Another Cruz”

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 10, 2016 10 Comments
Apparently, Mitch McConnell is trying to undermine the senate run of a conservative candidate from Indiana that he sees as a potential disruptive force like Ted Cruz. CNN reports:
Rep. Marlin Stutzman is a member of the anti-leadership House Freedom Caucus, a conservative in the mold of Ted Cruz and a three-term Indiana congressman who voted against John Boehner as speaker. Now, he wants a promotion to the Senate -- and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his allies want to stop that. Privately, McConnell has made clear to his confidantes that he wants to bolster the candidacy of Stutzman's chief GOP rival, Rep. Todd Young, and push him over-the-top in the May 3 primary, according to sources familiar with the conversations.
This move is purportedly motivated, at least in part, by Stutzman's vote against John Boehner. CNN continues:

New Trump Delegate Chief Accuses Cruz of “Gestapo Tactics”

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 10, 2016 86 Comments
As I noted yesterday, Donald Trump is having problems with delegates, and it sometimes seems that he doesn't understand how GOP nomination rules work or that the rules are different in different states or even that there are rules at all.  Whatever the reason for this impression, it's backed up by the fact that he's only recently begun to organize his team to work on delegates. One Trump campaign shake-up following his discouraging last month or so is his new hire Paul Manafort, a move announced less than two weeks ago.  Manafort is a long-time GOP political operative who has served as an adviser on the campaigns of Bob Dole, John McCain, and Gerald Ford, among others. The New York Times reports:

“Periods for Pence” trolls Indiana Governor over Abortion Law

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 09, 2016 25 Comments
In March, Indiana governor Mike Pence signed into law, HEA 1337, abortion restrictions related to diagnoses of Down's syndrome and other disabilities, selective abortion based on race or gender, and on the disposal of fetal remains (they are to be interred or cremated under the new law). At the time, Governor Pence said the new measures were “comprehensive pro-life measure that affirms the value of all human life.” Because abortions are down nationally and by 20% in Indiana over the past five years and is below the national average, there was some question about what practical benefits the law might have. One reaction that the law has had is the formation of a trolling campaign called "Periods for Pence" in which women tweet, email, and phone the governor's office to report on their menstruation cycle and other assorted issues with their vaginas.

Cruz set to dominate Colorado delegate selection (UPDATE – Sweep)

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 09, 2016 51 Comments
As we await final results from Colorado, it appears that Ted Cruz will obtain more delegates in addition to the 17 he already has. ABC News reports:
Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz has locked up the support of 21 Colorado delegates and may scoop up even more Saturday. Slates loyal to Cruz won every assembly in the state's seven congressional districts, which began April 2 and culminated Friday with 12 delegates selected. The Texas senator is well-positioned to pad his total Saturday, when 13 more delegates were to be chosen at the party's state convention. According to an Associated Press count, Trump has 743 delegates, Cruz has 532 and Ohio Gov. John Kasich has 143. It takes 1,237 to clinch the nomination, though there's a real chance no candidate will reach that mark by the national convention in Cleveland in July. Of Cruz's Colorado delegates so far, only 17 were formally pledged to him, and in theory the other four could change their vote in Cleveland. But they were all included on the senator's slates and are largely state party officials who said they were barred from signing a formal pledge for Cruz but have promised to back him in balloting at the convention.
ABC goes on to note that Cruz's "superior organization" has helped him substantially in Colorado, and NBC News is reporting that Trump's performance in Colorado reveals a "chaotic, overwhelmed Trump campaign."

Greece: Riots Break Out As Refugees Set to be Deported to Turkey

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 03, 2016 7 Comments
In the wake of the EU deal to return refugees to Turkey en masse, Greece is preparing for further violence and protests. The Guardian reports:
The Greek government is bracing itself for violence ahead of the European Union implementing a landmark deal that, from Monday, will see Syrian refugees and migrants being deported back to Turkey en masse. Rioting and rebellion by thousands of entrapped refugees across Greece has triggered mounting fears in Athens over the practicality of enforcing an agreement already marred by growing concerns over its legality. Islands have become flashpoints, with as many as 800 people breaking out of a detention centre on Chios on Friday.
The Greek government is expecting more violent protests and riots as the implementation begins tomorrow.

Media Pounces On Reports of Black Staffers Leaving the RNC

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 03, 2016 10 Comments
As I was reading through my newsfeeds, I kept seeing this story about "black staffers" leaving the RNC in droves.  It sounded ominous, like everything the mainstream media and progressive left have been saying was playing out in a mass exodus of black Republicans from the party. Here are some of the headlines: from NBCNews:

Yet Another Top African American Staffer Departs RNC

from the Sun Times:

RNC Losing Top Black Staffer

from Huffington Post:

Top Black Staffers Leave The Republican National Committee

However, once you follow the link and read the stories, these black staffers are simply moving on to new and greener pastures, often within the GOP or in more lucrative media roles.  For example, the subject of the stories above is  Kristal Quarker-Hartsfield, the national director of African-American Initiatives at the RNC, and she "is leaving the organization to work for Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) as his director of intergovernmental affairs."

High profile alleged anti-Muslim slashing of woman was hoax

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 03, 2016 5 Comments
On Thursday, a Muslim woman reported to police that a stranger who shouted "terrorist" at her slashed her face with a knife.  Apparently, after having been so "attacked," the woman then called 911, only to later admit that she was not attacked and that her wound was self-inflicted. The incident has been widely reported, including in a publication called Arab American News:
A blade-wielding wacko called a Muslim woman a “terrorist,” then sliced open her face as she left a downtown Manhattan cosmetology school, police said. The woman, 20, is a student at the Make-up Designory on Broadway near Rector St. and was leaving the building and walking toward Trinity Church at 4:50 p.m. when her attacker struck. Police sources describe him as a white man wearing a black hat and a black jacket. He came up behind her, slashed a roughly two-inch gouge into her cheek, and ran off, police sources said. The woman then ran back into her school on the 15th-floor and called a relative, who called 911.

Library of Congress to Stop Using Term “Illegal Alien”

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on April 02, 2016 14 Comments
Back in 2012 Professor Jacobson reported on the organized movement to ban the term "illegal alien" because it is deemed "racist."  Since then, California governor Jerry Brown has banned the term, the LA Times drifted into lala land banning both "illegal immigrant" and "undocumented immigrant," and former House Speaker John Boehner issued a memo about "individuals living outside the rule of law." A group of graduate students at Dartmouth have succeeded in their bid to get the terms "illegal" and "alien" to describe illegal aliens removed from public libraries across America that use the Library of Congress subject list. The Washington Times reports:
The Library of Congress has decided to no longer use the heading “illegal aliens” in bibliographic records after Dartmouth College students petitioned to ban the “racially charged” term. The Library of Congress denied the ban request in 2014, arguing that “illegal alien” is an official term for people who are in the country without proper documents, students told Fox News.

FBI to Interview Hillary Aides in Next Phase of Their Email Investigation

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on March 29, 2016 21 Comments
Despite her nonchalance about the issue, Hillary Clinton's email problems are not going away.  The FBI investigation has entered a new phase as the FBI is set to interview Hillary's longtime and closest aides. The Los Angeles Times reports:
Federal prosecutors investigating the possible mishandling of classified materials on Hillary Clinton’s private email server have begun the process of setting up formal interviews with some of her longtime and closest aides, according to two people familiar with the probe, an indication that the inquiry is moving into its final phases. Those interviews and the final review of the case, however, could still take many weeks, all but guaranteeing that the investigation will continue to dog Clinton’s presidential campaign through most, if not all, of the remaining presidential primaries.

Bernie Sanders’ Landslide-laden, Very Good Western Saturday

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on March 27, 2016 12 Comments
Despite repeated attacks from Democrats and even assurances from Obama that his campaign was all but over,  Bernie Sanders is more than holding his own against Democrat presidential rival Hillary Clinton.  Having announced last fall that his campaign is "not just electing a president, it is transforming America,” Bernie is content to push forward with his "political revolution." While Democrats mutter that self-proclaimed "democratic socialist" Bernie isn't even really a Democrat, Bernie swept all three of Western Saturday's Democrat caucuses:  Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington. CNN reports:
Saturday was a big day for Bernie Sanders' quest for the Democratic presidential nomination as he swept to resounding victories in the caucus states of Hawaii, Washington and Alaska. But the delegate math is still in Hillary Clinton's favor. "We knew things were going to improve as we headed West," Sanders said at a jubilant rally before 8,000 people in Madison, Wisconsin -- a state that will hold the next major contest in 10 days. "We have a path toward victory."
That path may be an uphill climb, however, because as CNN notes, the delegate math is not in his favor.

Florida Governor Signs Abortion Restrictions Bill Into Law

Posted by Fuzzy Slippers on March 26, 2016 11 Comments
With demand down and red states limiting the amount of taxpayer monies going to fund abortion, abortion clinics are closing across the country.  Friday, Florida became another state to cut abortion funding when Governor Rick Scott signed into law a bill that would cut state funding to clinics that perform abortion. The Orlando Sentinel reports:
Planned Parenthood and other health clinics that provide abortions in Florida will go without taxpayer funds and face increased regulations for the procedure, under a bill signed Friday by Gov. Rick Scott. . . . . The law, which takes effect July 1, requires doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, requires annual licensure inspections for clinics and bans the purchase, sell or transfer of fetal remains. The law upgrades the failure to properly dispose of fetal tissue from a second-degree misdemeanor to a first-degree misdemeanor.
