Not just former US President Obama, Chancellor Merkel of Germany, too, regards the nuclear deal with Iran as her greatest diplomatic accomplishment. The prominent German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung summed up the central role played by the Merkel government, writing, "Among all the parties working to bring about a negotiated deal, Germans enjoyed [Iranian regime's] special trust." Corporate Germany loved the deal too. The Bavaria Chamber of Commerce, the leading trade body in the country, told its clients ahead of the deal that the "German media landscape across the board agrees that lucrative deals worth billions are waiting to be made in Iran. As soon as the sanction are lifted, the run on the markets begins."

A recently published monograph by the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting (CAMERA) offers a sobering example of how biased teaching materials about the Arab-Israeli conflict and the history and practice of Islam were used for years in the curriculum of two public high schools in Newton, Massachusetts. As we highlighted in a post which reviewed the book, CAMERA’s important new study meticulously analyzes hundreds of highly skewed materials used by the Newton Public Schools system in its two high schools to teach 9th and 10th graders about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Islamic history and culture.

My recent DREAD-ful blog anniversary post had a good response in the comment section, and also generated numerous emails. I appreciate the feedback and support, it truly lifted my spirits. So let me clarify that, to the extent some people read into my post an intent to close down Legal Insurrection, that is not in the cards. There are some struggles and challenges, but we're not turning off the lights. There even is the possibility, which is premature to announce but which I'm happy to tease, of some exciting new developments.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has decided to expel movie mogul Harvey Weinstein due to the numerous allegations of sexual harassment and rape against him. From The Hollywood Reporter:
Following the meeting, the Academy issued a statement saying the board had voted "to immediately expel him from the Academy. We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over."

The Biloxi school district has pulled Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird from its 8th grade syllabi because it contains the "N-word." This kind of thing drives me straight up the wall.  What on earth makes the left think that hiding, banning, and otherwise destroying our nation's history and culture will achieve anything positive or good?  Not only do we need to know where we came from to know how far we've come as a nation, but we also need an historical and literary reference for some of the left's politically-correct mandates. Black rappers, athletes, comedians, politicians, pundits, et al. are the only ones who can use the "N-word" because they are "reclaiming it" and "taking back its power."  That's all well and good, but we're raising a couple of generations who will have no idea from what they are reclaiming the word or what its power once was and why it needed to be taken back in the first place.

The leftstream media is trolling the White House bigly over Ivana Trump's joke about being the "first lady." Having first decided there was something fishy about First Lady Melania Trump's decision to let her and the president's youngest son finish his school year in New York before moving to the White House, then created a flurry of accusations that Melania secretly hates her husband and won't hold his hand, they've now landed on an imagined insult to her from Trump's first wife, Ivana. Jimmy Kimmel is pulling the same old trick Jon Stewart used for years. When discussing a topic like healthcare or gun control, he's a serious policy wonk. When something comes up that's inconvenient or embarrassing to Democrats, hey - he's just a TV host.

Cornell University's campus in Ithaca, NY, is in turmoil after two incidents, as I first reported in mid-September. In one incident, a student shouted “build a wall” near the Latino Living Center. At least two reports (Campus Reform and The New American) claim the student was Hispanic and said it to mock Trump. The Cornell administration has declined to confirm or deny those reports, referring me instead to prior general statements from university officials. In a second incident, one or more students who got into a fight off campus with a black student called him the “N” word.
