Newsela is a relatively recently-established educational resource that purportedly specializes in non-fiction content for the nation's K-12 schools, teachers, and students.  It sprung up as a private partner of Common Core, and the service reaches at least 75% of America's K-12 classrooms. Newsela recently came under fire for its 9/11 instructional material. Newsela's 9/11 "Fact Sheet" included reference to Israel's "long and shady history" and to Israel as belonging, originally, to Muslims. A historical impossibility. Nonetheless, this drivel was published far and wide, and America's 5th and 6th grade students across the nation were spoon-fed it. Newsela has, under pressure from parents and alarmed educators, retracted and corrected the materials, but not before the damage was done.

The leadership at ESPN seems to think it can change the way people think by injecting left wing politics into its coverage of professional sports. Instead, they are alienating sports fans, many of whom are conservatives, and destroying their brand at the same time.

Asserting that they are "answering a call to confront and dismantle the white supremacist agenda in every community," a coalition of leftist groups is embarking on a 10-day march from Charlottesville to Washington D. C. Among their demands is the removal of President Trump from office and unspecified means of "confronting white supremacy throughout our history."  They also demand "an agenda that repairs the damage it's done to our country and its people." The Hill reports:
Activists are set to start a 10-day march from Charlottesville, Va., to Washington, D.C., on Monday to confront white supremacy and demand President Trump's removal from office.

Having lost most of their political power, Democrats are desperately wielding their not inconsiderable social and cultural power. From colleges and universities to statues and flags, the regressive left is demonstrating an alarming anti-American sentiment that threatens to undermine not just our nation's history but its very fabric. Case in point: Californian leaders, including House minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D), have adamantly opposed a rally organized by the Patriot Prayer group on the grounds that it is "alt right" and "white supremacist."  The problem, however, is that of the speakers scheduled to speak, only one was white.  Indeed, the group's leader is neither white nor "alt right."

Legal Insurrection colleague Kemberlee Kaye noted that one would be hard pressed to name the dumbest thing to happen last week in the name of inclusivity and tolerance. However, I think it would be a safe bet that the actions of a California Catholic school would pose fierce competition for that title.
A California Catholic school is facing a backlash from parents after officials took down some religious statues -- including one of Mary and baby Jesus -- over concerns that they were “alienating” prospective students. The head of the San Domenico School in San Anselmo said parents of some prospective students who visited the campus – which was founded in 1850 and serves 671 students grades K-12 -- expressed concern about the religious figures, according to the Marin Independent Journal.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) fired up the Netroots crowd with one of her now-familiar red meat-tossing,  flame-throwing speeches.  The speech is being touted as the launch of her 2020 presidential campaign. Warren railed against moderate Democrats and insisted that "we are not a wing of today’s Democratic Party. We are the heart and soul of today’s Democratic Party." Her goal appears to be to push her already-decimated party further away from mainstream Americans who find her repellent and her regressive, 1930's-era ideas idiotic. The New York Times reports:

Senator Elizabeth Warren used a speech to a grass-roots conference Saturday to take direct aim at Democrats’ diminished moderate wing, ridiculing Clinton-era policies and jubilantly proclaiming that liberals had taken control of the party.

Americans love their pets. In fact, we spend over $60 billion on them annually. Furthermore, many social justice warriors who seemingly despise their fellow humans will often be found protesting on behalf of animals. Progressives who love animals and truly believe in climate change may have trouble fully embracing the assertions of a UCLA professor who says our pets are contributing to global warming.
In a study released Wednesday, a geography professor at UCLA calculated that the meat-based food Americans’ dogs and cats eat – and the waste those pets produce – generate the equivalent of about 64 million tons of carbon dioxide a year.

In the case of Brexit, ordinary British citizens defied the elites in Brussels who thought they know what's best for the British people. Calexit is the opposite. Proponents of Calexit are elitists who are angry that Americans elected Trump and they want a divorce. Let's give it to them. The initiative has a chance to appear on the 2018 ballot, as my colleague Leslie Eastman pointed out in her recent post: #CalExit is resurrected as measure approved for signature gathering

Progressives have always been oddball, idealistic creatures who put more stock in their fantasy than in reality.  They imagine a world peopled with people just like them (well, the idealized version of themselves), only fewer of them . . . because climate change. They imagine a world in which they've eradicated perfectly normal and perfectly human thoughts, feelings, and actions.  They imagine a world that is devoid of humor, free will, and individualism.  They imagine a world replete with earthy-crunchy, socially-aware robo-clones shuffling along in their own self-satisfied image of perfected humanity.  Not surprisingly, they are often disappointed.

Yvette Felarca, leader of the Antifa organization BAMN (By Any Means Necessary) has been arrested for inciting a riot. The charge stems from an incident in Sacramento last year.

Radical Latino advocacy group (so they claim), National Council of La Raza recently announced a name change. No longer will the group be represented as a National Council of Race (literal translation), instead, they'll call themselves something a bit more palatable -- UnidosUS, or "UnitedUS". Like most corporate overhauls, the rebranding effort appears to be in the best interest of fundraising.

A New York City police officer and mother of three was assassinated in her vehicle this week. The city also graduated a new class of police officers. None of that seems to matter to Mayor Bill de Blasio who left town to be with left wing protesters at the G-20 conference in Germany.
