Democrats have been running around for months crafting an anti-Trump narrative about the threat Russia presents to our democracy. Now, there is real reason to be concerned about Russia's actions. Russia has built an expansive new military base in the Arctic. The Business Insider reports:
Russia unveils its newest Arctic base Russia has unveiled a new military base as part of its buildup in the Arctic region, and has provided a tour — albeit a virtual one on your computer. According to a report from FoxNews.com, the base is located on Franz Josef Land — an archipelago north of Novaya Zemlya that the Soviet Union seized from Norway in 1926 — and is known as the “Arctic Trefoil” due to its tricorne shape.

David B. Collum is a world-renowned Chemistry Professor at Cornell University, where I teach at the law school. He has been at Cornell since 1980, and is Department Chair through the end of this academic year. I don't know Dave well, but we have met before. He is something of a Renaissance man, able to converse not only in his specialty, but also in the fields of economics and politics. He's an iconoclast, and self-identifies in his Twitter bio as "Libertarian. Fan of Austrian business cycle."

The Washington Post and ABC ran a poll that asked people about the information that comes from President Donald Trump and the media. Unfortunately for the media, the poll shows how little trust the public has in the media. From WaPo:
The media says President Trump makes claims that aren’t true. Trump says the media produces fake news. And in a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, at least half of Americans say both Trump and the media “regularly” disseminate false information. Nobody looks good in this survey.

In disturbing parallels to the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the Weather Underground of the 1960's, we are seeing a small band of violent radicals attempt—and thus far succeed—in imposing their will on Americans.  The terrorist acts that the SDS and Weather Underground engaged in are what we most remember, but it's worth noting that they, too, started out with threats, riots, and destruction of property during their "Days of Rage."  They ultimately used violence as a means of condemning violence(?!) and of coalescing their "families" and "tribes" behind a "youth resistance," and we are seeing this all unfold yet again as violent radicals shriek about fascism while engaging in it themselves. In the wake of the violent riots that shut down speaking engagements by Milo Yiannopoulos and Heather Mac Donald, the violent radicals of the fringe left have notched up further "wins" in silencing Ann Coulter and in now causing the cancellation of the Avenue of Roses Parade in Portland, Oregon.

President Trump has signed an executive order to give Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos permission to start the process of moving education back to the local level. The New York Times reported:
The order requires Betsy DeVos, Mr. Trump’s education secretary, to review, modify and possibly repeal any regulations and guidelines that are not consistent with federal law.

UC Berkeley couldn't (or wouldn't) guarantee Ann Coulter's safety, so her speech has been cancelled. In this case, leftists used the mere threat of violence to silence another conservative voice. FOX News reports:
Ann Coulter cancels Berkeley event amid protests, says decision 'a dark day for free speech in America' The hecklers used their veto. Conservative commentator Ann Coulter told Fox News on Wednesday she would no longer give a planned speech at UC Berkeley after Young America’s Foundation pulled its support for the event amid threats of violence, calling her decision "a dark day for free speech in America."

It's unanimous! 7.5 billion to zero! No one in the entire world likes Donald Trump! That would be the conclusion you'd have to draw if you watched the segment NBC's Richard Engel prepared for today's Morning Joe on international reaction to Trump's first 100 days. From the UK to South Korea, the West Bank to Germany, there was amazing consensus against Trump. Among people Engel aired, the best anyone had to say about Trump was British news anchor Alistair Stewart's observation that at least we've literally survived his first 100 days. Said Stewart: there isn't "all-out nuclear conflict—although it is openly talked about."

I don't go to conferences very often. It's a blog conference phobia:
As longtime readers know, I don’t do blog conferences. There are a variety of reasons for that, but mostly it’s me, not them.
Since I wrote that in June 2012, I have attended a couple of conferences, mostly because I was invited. I'll also go if I'm a featured speaker. I don't generally go to stuff just to listen. I'd probably go to more stuff if I'd get more invitations.
