Legal Insurrection readers may recall our report on Stockton, California, and its experiment with "universal basic income". The city's 27-year old mayor is planning to launch this program, where its citizens are paid simply for being citizens. Sometime in August 2018, at least 100 people of varying income levels getting $500 a month for three years.

Conservative author and activist Ben Shapiro spoke at the University of Minnesota this week, despite protests from campus progressives. During his talk, he offered a sharp distinction between socialism and capitalism.

As the Democratic Party lurches leftward and adopts a distinctly socialist stance, its political center has also shifted left.  Amazingly, this new Democratic Party considers among its centrists those figures we tend to think of as radical leftists:  Obama, Hillary, and to a lesser extent Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). Figures once considered fringe even among the left are now hailed as the voice of the party; these figures include self-proclaimed socialist Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and radical progressive Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).  Sanders and more recently Warren have been strong proponents of single-payer and "free" college.  Thanks in large part to Bernie, much of the left, the Democrat base, thinks of itself as "Democratic Socialist."

As Venezuela collapses, stories have leaked out about the hunger in the country. But the one thing the socialist government has guarded the most are the malnutrition deaths, especially children. We all know it's happening, but the details remain dark. The New York Times investigated the effects of Venezuela's collapse on children and it's heartbreaking. It will make you cry, but the world needs to know this is going on. Children with severe malnutrition overwhelm emergency rooms across the nation since there is hardly any food.

Steven Hayward of Powerline calls our attention to an interview given by New York's Mayor Bill de Blasio. It's quite revealing---not just about de Blasio, but about the leftist mindset concerning the role of government, our legal system, and what people themselves want [emphasis mine]:
Q: In 2013, you ran on reducing income inequality. Where has it been hardest to make progress? Wages, housing, schools?

During the 2008 election, Democrats foamed at the mouth if you suggested Obama was a socialist. Then the 2016 election happened and with it the candidacy of Bernie Sanders. The mask was finally off as nearly half the Democratic Party rallied around an admitted socialist. Things would never be the same.
