Mia B. Love Tag

We were the first website to pick up on the star potential of Ludmya “Mia” B. Love. I remember calling her on her cell phone in early January 2012, before she received any national attention and before anyone thought she had a chance of winning the Republican nomination in Utah's 4th congressional district.

The Cook Political Report (CPR), a non-partisan group that analyzes elections, has changed the ratings in 12 districts across the country for the House 2018 elections as Democrats gain strength. It's important to note that the ratings have not gone directly to Democrat, but it shows that these districts have become vulnerable. Only one went from solid Democrat to likely Democrat, a plus for the Republicans.

Mia Love, Republican Congresswoman from Utah, gave what many consider to be the most moving speech at the March for Life. Those of you who have been around here for a long time will remember that we were the first website in the conservative movement to write about her candidacy, in early January 2012, and we helped launch media coverage of her campaign, Mia B. Love – A conservative political star rises in … Utah:
If you haven’t heard of Ludmya “Mia” B. Love before, you will be hearing a lot more about her.  Mia has the potential to be the next big thing in conservative politics. And you heard about her here first! ... I reached out to Mia recently and she was kind enough to call me.  We had a great discussion.   Mia is pro-life, pro-Tea Party, pro-Israel, and pro-2nd Amendment.  (In case you were wondering, the rifle her husband gave her as a first gift was a Marlin .22 caliber with a stainless steel barrel and scope, and she packs a Glock 26 9 mm.)

Between the dust-up over Mia B. Love (R-UT) using taxpayer money ($1,160) to attend the White House Correspondence Dinner and her somewhat high unfavorables, Love is facing a tough reelection bid this November and trails her Democrat opponent Doug Owens 51-45. Recognizing that she has work to do in order to keep her seat, Love  has decided to skip the Republican National Convention. The Salt Lake Tribune reports:

Rep. Mia Love has decided to skip the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, giving up her delegate slot to focus on her re-election bid and to go on a congressional trip to Israel.

She saw no benefit in attending the gathering where Donald Trump is expected to claim the party's presidential nomination.

"I don't see any upsides to it," Love said Friday. "I don't see how this benefits the state."

Longtime readers know the history of Legal Insurrection and Mia Love, whose success was one of the most satisfying moments for Legal Insurrection. This interview with Lou Dobbs shows why we've supported her since the start. Via Washington Examiner. Love became very emotional when discussing the Planned Parenthood videos:
Freshman Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, had to wipe away tears while talking about the undercover Planned Parenthood videos on the Fox Business network Wednesday night. "It's our job to protect those who do not have a voice to protect themselves, and to see what is actually happening to babies while they're still alive, I mean, it's horrific," said Love. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ETa_sUCDhk "This is not about a Right or Left issue – this is right or wrong, and whether we are going to stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves, or if we're going to just turn a blind eye and pretend that this is not happening," she added, wiping away tears.... "This is who we are as Americans; our job is to protect human life," said Love as tears streamed down her face. Love said she has "always been pro-life" and that as a mother and wife, she wants the American people to know what is happening and "stand up" to protect life.
On Iran, she was just as powerful:

Amidst all the good news from election 2014, the victories of Tim Scott, South Carolina's Senator, and Mia Love, new Representative from Utah's 4th District, are especially noteworthy. There's no way to deny that their race becomes important, if only because Democrats have emphasized race so very much. Sadly, these usually-baseless accusations of Republican racism have become more frequent, not less, since the administration of Barack Obama. Scott and Love are living, breathing refutations of that rhetorical approach, and proof that conservative black candidates can win even in a place like Utah, which is one of the whitest areas in the US. Here's an example of Scott's approach to answering questions about his race and his conservative politics: The Democratic Party must be shaking in its shoes worrying that the black community might actually start listening to someone like Scott or Love.

It has been a long time since we wrote about Mia B. Love, running for Congress in Utah-04. We first covered Mia -- and were the first to cover her campaign -- in early January 2012, when no one gave her a chance of getting the Republican nomination, Mia B. Love – A conservative political star rises in … Utah:
If you haven’t heard of Ludmya “Mia” B. Love before, you will be hearing a lot more about her.  Mia has the potential to be the next big thing in conservative politics. And you heard about her here first!
I remember calling her when her campaign was in its infancy, and she actually picked up her cell phone and gave me an interview as she was in the car driving to an event.  She seemed so happy that someone, anyone, was calling with interest in her candidacy. Back then, when I Googled her name for background, there were so few mentions of her that most of the search results went to -- well, you can imagine with a name like "Mia B. Love" that some of the search hits were not about her and NSFW. Mia came on strong as the conservative blogosphere rallied around her and brought attention to her campaign. She won the Republican nomination at the convention, but lost the general election by a few hundred votes to Jim Matheson, a long-serving Democratic incumbent who repeatedly defied the odds in a Republican district. Now Mia's running again, and the polls show her far in the lead, as reported by the Salt Lake Tribune:

Jim Matheson has been the Harry Houdini of modern politics, a Democrat surviving in a heavily Republican Utah district which became even more Republican after the 2010 redistricting. But he still beat Mia Love in 2012. By a few hundred votes. In Utah. With Romney at...

Mia Love rocketed to stardom in 2012. When she was featured here on January 9, 2012, almost no one had heard of her and she was given almost no chance of winning the Republican nomination. With the help of the conservative blogosphere, including many of the larger...

I've been giving serious consideration to finally joining the NRA. The people who want to take away your guns (and they would if they could) almost always are the same people who want to control every aspect of your life, from the health care you get to the...

After election day in Utah-04, Democrat Jim Matheson was ahead of Mia Love by 2,646 votes. But there were approximately 72,000 provisional and absentee ballots yet to be counted.  The results for the final canvass are being released today.  We will update. Thx @nra and @uschamber 4...

Operation Counterweight 2012 is over.  I reported the results in an earlier post, here is my assessment. The first thing you need to understand is that by definition we chose difficult races, not easy ones.  The goal was to try to flip Democratic seats or protect...

I certainly don't want to get overly confident, but this is very good news, via The Salt Lake Tribune: For 12 years, Jim Matheson has been a political escape artist, managing to wiggle free from every trap the Utah Republicans have thrown his way. But after six...
