June 2019

Brandon Straka is the founder of the #WalkAway movement. A gay man and former liberal, Straka recently left the Democratic Party and made a YouTube video about his defection and the reasons for his change of mind. The video went viral and started a movement in which people who have made a similar political switch have made their own videos explaining their own paths to political change.

The U.S. Supreme Court has reversed the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, and has ruled that the 1925 'Peace Cross' Memorial erected to remember World War I dead can stay on public land. The Opinion is here. Here is an explainer about the case from The Federalist Society:

I first blogged about Juneteenth in 2015. As I noted then, the day’s significance is almost criminally under appreciated. Over the last few years, the 19th of June and its significance, are slowly gaining national popularity, reverence, and acknowledgment.

Oberlin College has taken a public relations beating in the wake of the massive verdicts against it and its Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo in the Gibson's Bakery case. The verdicts totaled $44 million, but those will be reduced under Ohio's tort reform law -- how much they are reduced will be the subject of court litigation, but there will be a substantial reduction (perhaps more than half) in all likelihood. The stories are too numerous to list, but there has been widespread criticism of Oberlin College's conduct.

Back in February, I wrote about two transgender sprinters who placed first and second in the Girls Indoor Track Championship held in Connecticut.  As I noted at the time, the same two transgender athletes had won the top spots the year before, as well. Three of the girls who competed in the track championship have now filed a federal discrimination complaint against a statewide policy on transgender athletes.

In a major shift, Germany has acknowledged Iran's involvement in the last week's attacks on two tankers in the Gulf of Oman. German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that their was "strong evidence" that Tehran was responsible for the attacks on the tankers.

The protest effort to support impeachment of Trump is going swimmingly. A whole 15ish people showed up outside of the White House this past weekend to encourage impeachment of the president.

Harvard Law School professor Ron Sullivan Jr. and his wife Stephanie Robinson, who also teaches at the school, were removed from their positions as residential deans for Harvard's Winthrop House this spring. They were targeted by social justice warriors on campus who claimed they felt "unsafe" due to Sullivan's decision to join the defense team of Harvey Weinstein, even though he dropped Weinstein when he learned the trial would conflict with his teaching schedule.
