December 2016

It's that time of year again! The time when I get to sift through a year's worth of blog posts and decide which ones I like best. Looking back through my posts from 2016, my favorite posts are (predominately) more personal in nature. As regular readers know -- I gained a whole family this year -- a husband, step-daughter, and a daughter. Which explains why this is my most favorite post of the year:

Last week I was invited by an editor of The Washington Post’s Monkey Cage blog to contribute an article focusing on the issues surrounding president-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The article, “Trump’s plan to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem could help the peace process”, was published yesterday:

A report in the Washington Examiner featuring a new law about to go into effect in California is causing quite a stir. Contributor Travis Allen reports that starting Sunday, prostitution by minors will be legal in the Golden State.
SB 1322 bars law enforcement from arresting sex workers who are under the age of 18 for soliciting or engaging in prostitution, or loitering with the intent to do so. So teenage girls (and boys) in California will soon be free to have sex in exchange for money without fear of arrest or prosecution.

Oh, Russia. President Vladimir Putin remains the biggest troll in the world. Of course the Kremlin promised retaliation against America after President Barack Obama slammed them with new sanctions for allegedly trying to interfere with our presidential election. The sanctions included expelling 35 diplomats and their families and closing down two Russian compounds. Putin claimed he would do the same, but backed off and decided to take a road to help renew American-Russian relations. (Yeah right!)

Islamic terrorists are using Europe’s open borders as a tactical tool in their Jihad against the West. Anis Amri, ISIS terrorist responsible for the last week's Berlin Christmas market attack was able to crisscross Europe, covering 5 countries in 5 days, despite Europe-wide manhunt -- German news agency dpa reports. On December 19, Amri drove a lorry into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring 50 others. Arab-Tunisian 'refugee' was shot dead by Italian police during a routine check in Milan last Friday. Last November, a ISIS terrorists involved in Paris attacks had managed to slip into Belgium. Europe's most wanted terrorist was later arrested in Brussels after four months in hiding. German intelligence agency recently confirmed that a bombmaker belonging to Paris-based ISIS terror-cell has been “smuggled out of Europe by accomplices and is now back in Syria.”

I love San Francisco, but now I'm glad I haven't visited it in years. Turns out someone had to develop an online map to help people avoid human feces on the street. How disgusting:
After 20 years of envelope-pushing changes to grow government and ease law enforcement, the once-shining City by the Bay has turned into a place where:
  • Property crime runs amok
  • An online map is needed to track human feces on city streets
  • Discarded syringes are common sightings
  • Public urination is so widespread it has damaged subway elevators and escalators, building walls and power poles

To most people, other than those on the far left, George Soros is the original Dr. Evil, so it's kind of funny to hear him accuse Donald "America First" Trump of being a dictator in waiting. Yet that's just what he did this week in an op-ed at Project Syndicate:
Open Society Needs Defending Well before Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, I sent a holiday greeting to my friends that read: “These times are not business as usual. Wishing you the best in a troubled world.” Now I feel the need to share this message with the rest of the world. But before I do, I must tell you who I am and what I stand for.

President Barack Obama has placed more sanctions against Russia and expelled intelligence operatives from America for allegedly interfering with our 2016 election. The sanctions include expelling 35 Russian intelligence officers and closing two Russian compounds. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security found some information that Russians may have phished into the Democratic National Committee over the summer. (Before I go on, I need to correct the media. NO ONE hacked the election. Saying Russia hacked the election implies Russians invaded our voting booths and physically changed votes. That did NOT happen.)

I think this will be a tradition now, at least as long as I can remember to do it. Last year we posted the 10 most viewed Legal Insurrection posts in 2015, and it was well received. So here we go again. 2016 was a turbulent year, but I'm pleased that year over year, we increased page views by 1 million views versus 2015, to over 16 million views. And 2015 was over 1 million page views over 2014. So things are heading in the right direction. We didn't see a huge election year bounce this year, but we also didn't crash like many "conservative" websites, and our traffic is up post-election. So without further introduction, here are our 10 most viewed posts, plus an honorable mention.

There have been many deaths we have written about this year, from great musicians to actresses to astronauts to Nancy Reagan. But there may have been no other who so touched our lives. Fox News reports, Creator of the Red Solo Cup dies at 84:
The creator of the Red Solo Cup died on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at the age of 84. Robert Leo Hulseman lived in Northfield, Illinois, but spent much of his time in Scottsdale, Arizona. He began working for his father’s business – the Solo Cup Company – at the age of 18. He then worked his way to the top to become president and CEO.
