UC Berkeley couldn't (or wouldn't) guarantee Ann Coulter's safety, so her speech has been cancelled. In this case, leftists used the mere threat of violence to silence another conservative voice. FOX News reports:
Ann Coulter cancels Berkeley event amid protests, says decision 'a dark day for free speech in America' The hecklers used their veto. Conservative commentator Ann Coulter told Fox News on Wednesday she would no longer give a planned speech at UC Berkeley after Young America’s Foundation pulled its support for the event amid threats of violence, calling her decision "a dark day for free speech in America."

As we mentioned in a recent Quick Take, conservative students at Berkeley decided to thumb their noses at campus SJWs by inviting Ann Coulter to speak on campus. First the school imposed a number of conditions, then banned Coulter's speech altogether. Ann is vowing to visit the school anyway. The Young America's Foundation has the story:

For those who've been subjected to the MSM's cavalcade of criticism of President Trump's press conference of yesterday, some welcome relief from Ann Coulter's corner. On Sean Hannity's radio show yesterday, chatting with witty and insightful guest host Mark Simone, the inimitable Ann offered up these observations:
  • Trump's performance was "magnificent"—Ann could watch it "over and over again."
  • She notes Trump mentioning that CNN is not just all anti-Trump, but "there's so much hatred for me."
  • On courts ruling against exec order: it's as if the New York Times and Salon editors are "running the court system."
  • Ann wants Trump out there more: "a once a week press conference would be fantastic."
  • The left has three responses when they can't answer you. If they absolutely can't call you stupid, they call you crazy, ugly, or they just exclaim 'I can't even.'"
  • Mark Simone adds: "a racist is what a liberal calls you when they're losing the argument."

As Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R[?]-SC) rush to make Obama's Dreamer executive order (EO) law, cat fights are erupting on Twitter regarding immigration and Trump's intentions in this regard. In 2010, the DREAM Act failed in the Senate, so Obama picked up his pen and his phone and, by EO, made it happen.  Now, Republicans are working again with Democrats to revive the failed bill . . . they hope before Obama leaves office, though this is highly unlikely. The Hill reports:
Democratic and Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee are working on legislation that would limit deportations if President-elect Donald Trump repeals President Obama’s executive orders on illegal immigration.

Donald Trump has a "favorability" problem. Poll after poll shows Trump doing poorly against Hillary Clinton head-to-head, perhaps reflecting Trump's historically low levels of favorability (and high levels of unfavorability) for a leading major party candidate. In response, a meme was created and spread far and wide earlier this month that Trump's favorability is no worse than Ronald Reagan at a similar point in time in his challege to Jimmy Carter. The conclusion being that if Reagan could overcome that obstacle, so can Trump. So, the theory goes, those of you Republican national convention delegates who worry about Trump being a general election disaster who could cost Republicans the presidency, House and Senate have nothing to worry about. A post by Gallup (discussed below) explains why that is not accurate, and why Trump's favorability is much worse than Reagan's. But equally important is to examine how it came about that Gallup even is discussing the issue.

Had the video below bookmarked; wasn't sure what to do with it. But *somehow* right now seems to be a good time to post it. Both because I've been off the grid and don't have anything else to write about, and because of the fury from Trump world over the charge against Corey Lewandowski for battery on Michelle Fields. Scrolling through Twitter, clearly the world has gone mad. It started as a defense that Lewandowski never touched Fields, she made it up, and she's a publicity hound. It's Friday afternoon. This should get the holiday weekend off to a nice, quiet start. Donald Trump, angry that negative ads are being run against him, is threatening to sue to keep Ted Cruz out of the race based on the claim that Cruz is not a "natural born Citizen" and not eligible. (h/t Hot Air) My view is here. I *thank* the people who have emailed me to call me a traitor and fraud and hack because of my view on the subject. I was a guest on Caffeinated Thoughts Radio on 93.3 FM in Iowa on Saturday, January 16, 2016. (Full audio at bottom of post.) The topic was Ted Cruz and the "natural born Citizen" controversy. For my prior analysis, which is referred to in the radio discussion, see my September 3, 2013 post, natural born Citizens: Marco Rubio, Bobby Jindal, Ted Cruz. In the past 2.5 years, many people have sent me complaints and supposed analyses of things I missed; I track those down and not a one has persuaded me one iota that my analysis was wrong. As I said in that post:
I also am not trying to “win” the argument. I have no intention (hah!) of getting into the endless argument streams this topic engenders, where for every answer there is a new obscure historical reference or convoluted theory until someone gives up. There are some things you just can’t “win” on the internet, and this is one of them.
Yet it sickens me the way Donald Trump and Ann Coulter have demagogued the issue. They may be successful in creating doubts in voters' minds; that's the nature of propaganda, it sometimes works. Here are excerpts from my interview; the full audio is at the bottom of the post:
