After the collapse of the Soviet Union, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld created a stir when he dividing the continent into what he called "old Europe" and "new Europe." In the summer of 2009, after the first Tea Party protests, SoCal Tax Revolt Coalition representatives were invited to to meet with young politicos from Europe by the U.S. State Department. This future leaders made the request to learn more about the nascent citizen activist organizations.

Add this to the annals of This is Why Everyone Hates the Media, Volume Eleventy Gazillion. In approximately three weeks, Americans in flyover country will be treated to what NASA calls, "one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse."

Republican Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has vetoed the Democrat education funding bill because he viewed it as a major bailout for Chicago Public Schools (CPS). The Chicago Tribune reported:
Rauner rewrote the measure to take away a $250 million block grant that Chicago Public Schools has long received and also changed how the funding formula weights CPS pension funding when dividing up new money for schools.

About a week ago, Professor Jacobson blogged about the crappy new Democratic party slogan: "A Better Deal: Better Skills, Better Jobs, Better Wages". "The lesson Democrats appear to have learned from losing to Donald Trump is that they need to move further to the left," he blogged.

A firestorm of controversy erupted when the NY Times ran an editorial, after the attempted assassination of Republican congressmen in Virginia, blaming Sarah Palin for the culture of political violence. The Times specifically referenced an electoral map from 2011 which showed what appears to be cross-hairs over Arizona. That map, as we covered at the time, was used to falsely blame Palin for the January 8, 2011 shooting of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and the murder of several people by Jared Loughner. In fact, that connection between the map and the shooting was completely fabricated, and spread by left-wing bloggers and media. There is zero evidence to suggest that Loughner ever saw the map, much less was motivated by it.

JK Rowling found herself in the midst of a Twitter storm after retweeting a partial video that misrepresented President Trump's interaction with a boy in a wheelchair.   Rowling, however, didn't stop at a mere retweet, she went on a six tweet tirade against the president. She's now apologized, not to the President whom she wrongfully accused, but to the boy to whom the president paid special attention and to the boy's family.  She has also deleted the original, misguided tweets.

With almost 50 days to go until the German parliamentary election, the country has been hit by another wave of terror and migrant crime. On Friday, a ‘Palestinian’ asylum seeker went on a stabbing spree at a Hamburg supermarket before he was overpowered by passers-by. Despite the eyewitness account of assailant screaming ‘Allahu Akbar’ at the scene of attack, German media and politicians went into their ritualised speculations over the psychological state of the attacker. German news reports repeatedly described the 26-year-old Arab attacker as ‘mentally unstable’.

U.S. District Judge James Cacheris in Alexandria, VA, ruled that politicians who block followers on social media violates free speech. From The Wall Street Journal:
A federal court in Virginia ruled that a local politician violated the free-speech rights of a constituent she banned from her Facebook page, in a case the judge said raises “important questions” about the constitutional restrictions that apply to social media accounts of elected officials.

There are many vitriolic anti-Trump regulars on Morning Joe. Elise Jordan ranks right up there with the "best" of them. Interesting, considering that Jordan is a Republican, having worked for President George W. and on the Rand Paul campaign. Perhaps that explains it: bitter aftertaste from the primaries? In June, as our friends over at NewsBusters noted, Jordan compared Trump to a "suicide bomber." In July, Jordan tried to revive the discredited Russian "dossier" to use against the president.

While the battle over Obamacare has raged, it has taken attention away from the ongoing opioid crisis. Now, Trump's own commission on opioids has asked him to declare a national emergency.
