My favorite part of the confirmation hearings so far has been Ted Cruz's statement opening his questioning of Attorney General Nominee Jeff Sessions. It is some of the best 5 minutes of video I've seen in a long time, and reminds me of why I supported Cruz during the primaries. And would love to see him on the Supreme Court. Cruz used his time to skewer the Democrats on the committee for their false posturing (transcript via Conservative Review and IJR):

Honeypot traps are in the news after the CNN-Buzzfeed Trump-Russia fiasco. What's a honeypot trap? Seriously, haven't you read any spy novels? It when an intelligence agency offers up honey (a girl, boy, whatever) to a target, who then partakes of the honey not knowing the event is being filmed for future blackmail. The trap can be things other than honey (like luring the target into some other financial or criminally compromising position). Having traveled extensively and studied in the Soviet Union, I know that various traps were set even for lowly students.

It's one fabulously nasty mess both CNN and Buzzfeed created for themselves. Buzzfeed decided to publish an unsubstantiated dossier full of all kinds of licentious information about president-elect Trump, particularly that he has "deep ties to Russia". CNN then ran with the Buzzfeed story. The backstory on how the dossier came to be is as bizarre as the document itself. NOTHING, not even the tiniest little accusation in the report was verified before Buzzfeed hit "publish." They even mentioned that the document had been bouncing around news outlets and reporters for months. Such open secrets are not uncommon. Stories, videos, documents, especially those most sensational in nature are frequently shopped to blogs, news orgs, and reporters. Everyone knows about them. Everyone talks about them. But no one reports them. Why? Because their veracity is unprovable.

President Obama's love of golf has drawn a fair amount of scrutiny and criticism over the course of his presidency. As he wraps up Oval Office duties, focusing on a post-White House life, Dear Leader may find himself excluded from an exclusive golf course. Turns out, the mostly-Jewish run Woodmont Country Club in Maryland is not sure they want to accept President Obama into their membership due to his contentious relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. “In light of the votes at the UN and the Kerry speech and everything else, there’s this major uproar with having him part of the club, and a significant portion of the club has opposed offering him membership,” a source told the New York Post:

New Jersey Democratic Senator Cory Booker made "history" today by testifying against a fellow Senator -- Jeff Sessions -- in a confirmation hearing. I noted yesterday that This must mean Cory Booker is running for President in 2020 This was the first time such Senator against Senator testimony had ever happened. Booker tried to make it seem as if he was doing something heroic, as if the choice was between remaining completely silent or taking the witness stand:

Now that Barack Obama's farewell speech is over, and there is less that 10 days until the inauguration, speculation is beginning about the actions that Donald Trump will take in his first 100 days in office. Doubtless, immigration will be on the top of his task list. Alan Gomez, immigration reporter for USA Today, notes that Trump will have broad presidential powers in dealing with "sanctuary cities".
Trump will be armed with a range of powerful options, including federal lawsuits and the power to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in grants that states and cities rely on.

Former CEO ExxonMobil Rex Tillerson, President-elect Donald Trump's choice for Secretary of State, will face the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today for his confirmation hearing. You can expect him to face questions about Russia since ExxonMobil has agreed to numerous deals with Russian state companies to drill in the Arctic. Questions will also include topics like climate change and human rights. You can watch the confirmation with us as I live blog.

Of all the Morning Joe crew, you might be surprised to learn that it was liberal Dem Mika Brzezinski who this morning took the toughest shots at CNN and Buzzfeed for publishing unverified stories containing salacious allegations regarding Donald Trump's business dealings with, and personal behavior in, Russia. Mika also speculated that the intelligence community might have propagated the story as payback for Trump having insulted them. Brzezinski first wondered whether CNN and Buzzfeed went with the story "because they hate [Trump] so much, or is the intelligence community literally putting the screws to Donald Trump because he insulted them?"

Democrats are going after Trump's pick for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos because she made financial contributions to FIRE, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. FIRE is an outstanding non-partisan organization which defends free speech and due process, among other things, for college students and faculty. Democrats have picked the wrong target. In the words of Professor Jacobson, "That they would try to defame such a great organization to get at her is a sign of how pathetic and dangerous they are."

General John Kelly, President-elect Donald Trump's choice to lead the Department of Homeland Security, had his Senate confirmation hearing, which went off without a hitch. In fact, Kelly received massive praise from both sides of the aisle Sen. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) faced an all day confirmation hearing for attorney general in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The senators had a blast asking Sessions the same questions over and over. Some asked valid questions while others asked obscure questions that made you scratch your head. But overall, Sessions promised he would uphold all the laws, even those he opposed as a senator. He promised he would stand up to President-elect Donald Trump and keep politics out of his decisions.

Dylann Roof received the death penalty from a federal jury for murdering nine black people at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC, in June 2015. It took the jury less than three hours to reach their verdict. Judge Richard Gergel will impose the sentence of Roof at 9:30AM on Wednesday. The jury recommended the death penalty on all 18 counts Roof faced that carried the sentence. Roof opened fire on the members of the church after they welcomed him into their circle with open arms and allowed him to sit next to the pastor. He hoped his crime would spark a race war.

Hollywood is on a roll this week. First Meryl Streep's fabulously tone deaf anti-Trump diatribe, now, former co-host of The View Rosie O'Donnell is using social media to spew profanity-laced, ill-informed, opinions about Speaker Paul Ryan. According to The Hill:
The tweet came as a reply to one from “Strangers With Candy” actress Sarah Thyre, who dropped the F-bomb in her own post about Ryan, writing, “Dear @SpeakerRyan: F--- you. Love, me and @pussyrrriot,” along with a video called "Straight Outta Vagina." She sent the tweets as Ryan presided over a joint session of Congress to verify Electoral College votes and a day after the Speaker announced GOP lawmakers would move to cut federal funding for Planned Parenthood.
