January 2017

Our completely unbiased media has awoken from hibernation. For the first time in a long time, they're preparing to hold the government accountable, particularly the White House. Jack Shafer of Politico sounds quite excited about this new era of hard hitting journalism:
Trump Is Making Journalism Great Again Donald Trump and his forthcoming presidency may be the greatest gift to Washington journalism since the invention of the expense account. His unorthodox approach to politics and governance has vaporized the standard, useful, yet boring script for reporting on a new administration’s doings.

I appeared on the Lars Larson Show in the evening on January 16, 2017, to talk about the shutdown of Legal Insurection's YouTube account, as described in these prior posts: Hope you enjoy the interview, I should have more posted in the coming days.

As someone who, both individually and on the website, participated in the Tea Party surge culminating in the retaking of the House in November 2010, I saw first hand how viciously the Tea Party was attacked. I attended the Tax Day Tea Party rally in Corning, NY, on April 15, 2009, Looking At Tea Parties Through Binoculars, Like On Safari:
... There was a good crowd in this relatively small town in western upstate NY (several hours from NY City), several hundred in total. Corning is home to Corning glass and Steuben glass. The entire region has been hit hard by the exodus of jobs to less tax intensive parts of the U.S. and abroad.

In a call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, January 15, 2017, Secretary of State John Kerry assured the prime minister that there would be no further United Nations Security Council action taken against Israel in the wake the Paris peace conference. That conference brought 70+ nations together to discuss terms of peace between Israel and the Palestinians, without either party being present. United Nations Security Council resolution 2334, passed in late December 2016, when the United States abstained and failed to protect Israel from a resolution that stated that the Israeli presence in all lands captured in 1967, including parts of Jerusalem, constituted a flagrant violation of international law. The immediate effects of the resolution was to encourage boycotts of Israel and increase Palestinian violence, mostly rock throwing, against Israel.

If I could post this every week, I would. This is my third Martin Luther King Jr. Day here at LI and every year this is the message I choose to reiterate. This year in particular Love's message is more crucial, more dire than before. Love reconciles, heals, joins, and keeps no record of wrong. Love is unselfish, unwavering, trusting, and hopeful. If ever there was a time our country needed Love's redemptive power, it's now.

Liberal pundit Bob Beckel will reunite with Eric Bolling, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Greg Gutfeld, and Dana Perino on Fox's The Five starting today. Fox released a press statement announcing his return:
In making the announcement, Murdoch said, “Bob was missed by many fans of The Five and we’re happy to welcome him back to the show.” Beckel commented, “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to go home again and join my television family around the table of The Five. I have no doubt it will be a vigorous yet entertaining debate.”

The Clinton Foundation has decided to eliminate the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), the networking platform for the charity. The foundation filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) with the New York Department of Labor. The foundation will lay off 22 employees and shut down its New York main office. The process began in September as the charity continued to lose foreign donations, "signaling the organization’s clout was predicated on donor access to the Clintons, rather than its philanthropic work."

Is the party—the Republican party, that is—over? That's what Joe Scarborough is predicting. On today's Morning Joe, Scarborough surmised that "Donald Trump, by the end, will blow apart the Republican party" and that people are "going to look at George W. Bush as the last Republican president." Scarborough depicted Trump as "in a sense, the first independent president." Joe also suggested that Bernie Sanders might have the same party-demolishing impact on the Democrats.

Democrats are clearly planning to keep playing the "illegitimate" card on Donald Trump. Jehmu Greene is a FOX News contributor who has been active in the Democratic Party for years. On Friday, she announced her candidacy for DNC chair. She also appeared on FOX and Friends at which time she used the word "allegedly" to describe Trump's election. From Real Clear Politics:
DNC Chair Candidate Jehmu Greene: Trump Was "Allegedly Elected," Dems Have "Mandate" To Resist HOST: What do you make of these remarks from John Lewis? Obviously, he is a Civil Rights icon, but now is claiming that Donald Trump is not legitimate. What say you?
