At 11:16AM, lawyer Michael Avenatti tweeted about his press conference tomorrow morning, which would cover a high school/prep school scandal that involves Nike. Only 46 minutes later, a CNN reporter tweeted that the Southern District of New York charged Avenatti for "attempting to extract more than $20M in payments from a publicly traded company by threatening to use his ability to garner publicity to inflict substantial financial & reputational harm on the company if his demands were not met." The DOJ also announced Avennati's arrest on a separate charge of federal bank fraud and wire fraud.

Authorities in San Jose, CA, arrested Carlos Eduardo Arevalo Carranza for the murder of Bambi Larson. They said Carranza was in America illegally with "a lengthy history of arrests," which has brought up sanctuary policies in the state. From CBS San Francisco (emphasis mine):
The case brought forth outcry from Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia, who said the county’s refusal to honor detainer requests and notifications allowed Arevalo Carranza to be released from county jail without notifying federal authorities.

The Atlantic has just published a status report on the California #Resistance and its battle with the White House.
From the moment Donald Trump took office, California has been ground zero for the resistance against him and his administration, in terms of both grassroots citizen activism and legal and administrative action by its Democratic-dominated state government. But since the inauguration of Governor Gavin Newsom in January, the Golden State has often seemed to be in a state of total war with the White House.

A statue honoring Christopher Columbus was vandalized this weekend in the San Diego area's Chula Vista.
According to police, officers were called to Discovery Park around noon after neighbors reported that someone poured red paint over the statue. When officers arrived they also found the words “genocide” and “FU” spray painted onto the figure. A brass plaque that used to be attached to the statue was also missing.
