The shooter prepared a manifesto. It explains his rational: leftist rhetoric and hate is what motivated him.
According to the Manifesto:

This whole affair puts SPLC as a yet another Democrat organization (including some of the state parties of the South in the late 19th/early 20th centuries) as having OFFICIALLY given money to KKK groups. Well, certainly should make them proud that they were donating money to the very cause(s) they told their donors for > 60 years that they were fighting. Such documented hypocrisy is rare.
