December 2018

Outgoing Broward County Supervisor of Elections has vowed to fight in court after Gov. Rick Scott suspended her "due to misfeasance, incompetence and neglect of duty." A report from The Tampa Bay Times may not help Snipes since a Broward County self-evaluation shows during the election, the county had problem after problem like mechanical errors, staffing shortages, and procedural violations.

The NY Times has an extensive report on the lasting and profound damage to Elizabeth Warren's presidential ambitions from her decision in October to release the results of a DNA test to supposedly prove she was Native American. When the DNA test was released, we noted the problems, Elizabeth Warren DNA test does NOT prove she’s Native American, contrary to the hype.

The only thing Bernie Sanders likes more than vilifying 'millionaires and billionaires' is talking about the imminent danger of climate change. He has frequently lambasted President Trump and Republicans for failing to take the issue seriously. But now we learn that like many people on the left, Bernie has a massive carbon footprint, especially when it comes to air travel.

In December 2013, the American Studies Associations passed an academic boycott of Israel, part of the international Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The ASA boycott, which is the subject of ongoing litigation, was undertaken by anti-Israel faculty who methodically took over key ASA committees and National Council. Though only about 20% of the ASA membership voted for the boycott, that was enough given low participation rates in the voting.

I came across this brief news article about a confrontation between a black FedEx driver, Timothy Warren, and an angry man who repeatedly shouted racial epithets at him. The driver killed the man. Prosecutors have decided against bring charges against the driver, despite the death of the victim. Based on the facts as reported, that appears to be the legally correct decision.

Wisconsin Republicans passed legislation early Wednesday morning that will limit the powers of the incoming Democrat Governor Tony Evers and Attorney General. From The New York Times:
The package of bills, which now awaits Mr. Walker’s signature, would limit early voting and, for the coming months, give lawmakers, not the governor, the majority of appointments on an economic development board. They also prevent Mr. Evers from banning guns in the Wisconsin Capitol without permission from legislators.

The government needs to come up with spending bills by Friday or the government will shut down. Border wall funding has halted the talks as disagreements between the Democrats and President Donald Trump continue. Trump wants $5 billion, but the Democrats will not budge from their demand of only $1.6 billion.

Rioting has been taking place recently in France, but trying to get a clear idea of what's behind the demonstrations isn't easy. The first thing to say is that the riots certainly seem to be anti-Macron. But there are plenty of reasons to be anti-Macron, some emanating from the left and some from the right or from some other impulse or belief system.

Now that midterms have ended our eyes have strayed to the 2020 presidential election. The Democrats have shown eagerness to do all they can to unseat President Donald Trump. That eagerness means anyone with a D after their name will say anything to get their name out and most of us respond, "Who are you?" For example: Former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick announced he will not run for president in 2020.
