In many ways, former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick (D) was Obama before Obama was Obama.  Patrick was elected the first black governor of Massachusetts in 2006, and his entire campaign was based on the same nebulous "change" mantra that would sweep then-Senator Obama into the White House two years later.
At his first inauguration under uncommonly fair skies in January 2007, the man who a year earlier had been dismissed as a hopeless romantic with no chance of victory carried with him limitless hope for the future — for better schools, fairer housing, racial healing. “It’s time for a change,” Patrick declared, “and we are that change.”
Sound like Obama's "we are the change we've been waiting for"?  That's no mistake.

On today's Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough said that presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway is "so stupid" that it "makes my teeth hurt." Scarborough, presumably seeking to cover his tracks, then revised his remark to say "not her, but the words that come out of her mouth," a distinction with no real difference. Conway had noted the donations to Democrats including Hillary Clinton made by Robert Mueller and several lawyers he has appointed to his investigative team.

There is no religious doctrine as unassailable as the claim that differences in achievement in areas where women and/or racial/ethnic minorities are UNDERrepresented is caused by systemic sexism/racism etc. That religious doctrine, however, never is applied to fields in which women and/or racial/ethnic minorities are OVERrepresented. The claim that differences in outcome are caused by discrimination drives the "diversity" agenda on campuses and at companies. That one might support diversity as a goal, yet question whether the problem is systemic discrimination and whether MORE discrimination really is the answer, is considered heresy and is punishable by firing, harassment, and on campuses, being shouted down.

Venezuela has been in a state of unrest and seemingly near collapse for years, and it's not clear how much longer Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro can hang onto power.  Food, medicine, and toilet paper shortages resulting from Maduro's socialist policies have created unrest among many Venezuelans.  Anti-Maduro protests and the responses from the Maduro government have resulted in over 100 deaths. One small group of military men staged an uprising at a military base that was quickly quashed by Maduro loyalists.  The group's goal, they stated, was to "restore constitutional order." The Maduro government is calling the uprising a "terrorist attack."  Reports indicate that one person died, another was badly wounded, and seven were arrested.

The transcript of President Trump's call with Mexico's President Peña Nieto, leaked and then published by the WaPo, contained some remarks about New Hampshire that generated a lot of criticism. The context in which Trump raised the issue was in speaking to the Mexican president about the problem of drugs supplied by Mexico:
“We have a massive drug problem, where kids are becoming addicted to drugs because the drugs are being sold for less money than candy,” Trump said. “I won New Hampshire because New Hampshire is a drug-infested den.”

The Merkel government is apparently covering up the extent of the ongoing migrant influx ahead of the country's general elections, a leaked police document published in German newspapers suggests. According to the document, Germany’s Federal Police, the agency responsible for immigration and border controls, is observing “high number of immigrants” entering illegally into Germany along the country's southern border with Austria. The Federal Police is urging the government to reinstate border controls to stem the flow of illegal migrants into the country, the document reveals.

On Al Sharpton's MSNBC show this morning, Jason Johnson depicted the Trump administration as engaging in "the continuing march forward of an attempted authoritarian regime." He accused the administration of seeking "the bit-by-bit destruction of democracy." Johnson is a professor at Morgan State University, a prominent HBCU, and is political editor of The Root, an African-American oriented online publication owned by Univision.

What in the world is going on at the FOX News channel? In the past year, Megan Kelly and Greta Van Susteren left the network. Roger Ailes was forced out and Bill O'Reilly left when it looked like he was going to face an investigation. Eric Bolling has now been suspended over an allegation that he sent lewd text messages.
