San Francisco Tag

Rising crime and dissatisfaction with the quality of life are steadily driving people out of San Francisco. It makes perfect sense. Why would people want to pay San Francisco prices if they don't even feel safe walking down the street? The number of people leaving or planning to leave should alarm city leaders.

Last month the San Francisco Board of Education (SFBOE) made a splash with their decree to rename 44 of its schools, including those celebrating presidents Washington and Lincoln, but now, after a round or two of ridicule and a lawsuit, it looks like the the renaming affair is going to fizzle outAt first SFBOE conceded that they should have consulted experts, and now they've promised to vote on the issue again once students return to school full time.

San Franciscans may think they are the smartest people in the world, but look who they put in charge of educating their kids. The city’s Board of Education drew nationwide attention when it decided to rename its 44 schools, including those honoring Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Paul Revere — the world historic figures and beloved personalities whose biographies shaped our understanding of the American experience.

Yes, you read the headline correctly. The city of San Francisco is suing its own school district for not having a "meaningful plan for how or when in-person" teaching will begin. Teachers and students have not been in the classroom since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Also, I think this is the fourth #headdesk story I've written related to San Francisco schools.

A 45-year-old parolee named Troy McAlister should have been in prison on New Year's Eve, but instead of facing the Three Strikes life prison term he had earned through his criminal acts, he was set free by San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin. Since his April 2020 release, McAlister was arrested multiple times and released each time, with not even parole violation charges pursued. McAlister, whose long rap sheet includes robbery and carjacking, was reportedly in a stolen car and under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he ran a red light and plowed into two pedestrians, both of whom died.  McAlister fled the scene.

The San Francisco Unified School District targeted 44 schools for possible name changes back in October. The list included Abraham Lincoln. Dianne Feinstein, Herbert Hoover, and others. The school district voted this week to rename Abraham Lincoln school due to his comments about black people and "the majority of his policies proved to be detrimental to [Native Americans]."
