George Stephanopoulos Tag

This is rich. Republicans understandably have an issue with George Stephanopoulos after the debacle of the 2012 Republican presidential debate, when he prepped the landscape for the Obama "War on Women" campaign theme: After Stephanopoulos failed to disclose his contributions to the Clinton Foundation while he was excoriating the author of Clinton Cash, Stephanopoulos was removed by ABC News from its list of Republican debate moderators.

Last year, George Stephanopoulos had a particularly antagonistic interview with the author of Clinton Cash, and shortly thereafter, it was revealed that he had donated a substantial sum of money to the Clinton FoundationABC stood by their man, though he did have to apologize on-air. The Washington Free Beacon is now reporting that Stephanopoulos has simply stopped disclosing his donations to the Clinton Foundation.
ABC news anchor George Stephanopoulos has stopped disclosing his donations to the Clinton Foundation prior to his interviews with presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Stephanopoulos interviewed Clinton twice over the past week, once Thursday morning on Good Morning America and again on Sunday’s This Week.

Fresh off her excellent debate appearance Wednesday night, Carly Fiorina made an appearance on Good Morning America with George Stephanopoulos who tried to back her into a corner over comments she made about the horrific Planned Parenthood videos. Just as he did last spring with Clinton Cash author Peter Schweizer, Stephanopoulos came off looking like a hack. Scott Whitlock of NewsBusters has the story:
Carly Fiorina Nails Stephanopoulos on Planned Parenthood: Watch the Tapes Former Democratic activist turned journalist George Stephanopoulos on Thursday went after Carly Fiorina for attacking Planned Parenthood during Wednesday’s presidential debate. The Good Morning America co-host grilled, “Another powerful moment last night was when you talked about those Planned Parenthood tapes. But analysts who've watched all 12-plus hours say the scene you've described, that harrowing scene you described, actually isn't in those tapes.”

In 2011, ABC News launched a major rebranding effort focused on the slogan "See the Whole Picture," featuring key news personalities including George Stephanopoulos:
Today ABC News launched a major re-branding initiative. The last time that ABC News spoke directly with its audience about what defines ABC News was over a decade ago with "More Americans Get Their News from ABC News than Any Other Source" - a statement that is still true today. ABC News President Ben Sherwood laid out the foundation of the new campaign to ABC News staff in an email on Monday morning: Starting today and over the course of 2012, you're going to see new on-air promos that feature images of an unprecedented gathering of ABC News anchors and correspondents and a call to action: When viewers turn to ABC News, they will "See the Whole Picture." Believe it or not, it's been more than a decade since ABC News consistently put forward a message or slogan. This new promise - "See the Whole Picture" - will help unify ABC News and differentiate our efforts from the competition.

The Clinton Foundation is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad couple of months.  There were the pay to play accusations from Haiti, the numerous other pay to play "coincidences," the rather cozy relationship with "journalist" donor (and former employee) George Stephanopoulos, reports of $30 million from books and speeches in 16 months, and even the email controversy is being linked to the Foundation as part of "one big, hairy deal." It doesn't end there.  Jonathan Allen at Vox reports that in a Friday afternoon Clinton financial disclosure "news dump" is evidence that Hillary "personally took money from companies that sought to influence her":
During Clinton's tenure as Secretary of State, Corning lobbied the department on a variety of trade issues, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The company has donated between $100,000 and $250,000 to her family's foundation. And, last July, when it was clear that Clinton would again seek the presidency in 2016, Corning coughed up a $225,500 honorarium for Clinton to speak.

The Stephanopoulos story keeps getting worse, especially when compared to the experience of other journalists. Geraldo Rivera of FOX News claims he was fired by ABC News in 1985 for a paltry $200 donation to a friend who was running for mayor in New Bedford, MA. It's amazing what you can learn by following Instapundit's Twitter feed: Here's the related story from Jessica Chasmar of the Washington Times:
Geraldo on Stephanopoulos apology: ABC fired me over $200 donation Geraldo Rivera on Friday questioned why he was fired from ABC News 30 years ago for making a $200 political donation to a family friend, while the network appears to be standing firm behind George Stephanopoulos, who apologized Thursday for donating $75,000 to the Clinton Foundation. “In 1985, after fifteen great years, I was fired by ABC News,” Mr. Rivera wrote in a Facebook post, Mediaite reported. “The official reason for my firing was a non-disclosed $200 donation to a family friend running in a non-partisan mayoral campaign in New Bedford Massachusetts.”
Rivera discussed the issue on FOX and Friends this week:

Remember how former Clinton advisor and now ABC News host George Stephanopoulos raked the "Clinton Cash" book author over the coals? We smelled a rat at the time:
George Stephanopoulos worked in the Bill Clinton administration as a senior adviser. In what way is he qualified to question the author of a book which seeks to expose alleged corruption of the Clintons? Peter Schweizer holds his own in this interview despite the aggressive and skeptical questions hurled at him throughout the discussion. Stephanopoulos is not so much a journalist, he’s a member of the palace guard. It’s quite clear which side he’s on in this situation.
Rat confirmed, via Politico, George Stephanopoulos discloses $50,000 contribution to Clinton Foundation:

Peter Schweizer's book, 'Clinton Cash' has not even been released yet, but has created quite a stir in the DC community. With Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign officially launched, the book is raising a lot of questions about Hillary's time as Secretary of State and the Clinton Foundation.  Schweizer says his book lays out a pattern when foreign interests - both government and business - made large donations to the Clinton Foundation and paid Bill Clinton large sums of money while having business before the state department. Schweizer was on Morning Joe today and was being peppered with questions from Mika Brzezinski and Mike Barnicle about "proof", "evidence" and a "smoking gun" (like George Stephanopoulos did) Schweizer tried to remind them he's just an author and doesn't have the ability to do the digging to establish a legal case. They continued to press and that's when Joe Scarborough had enough:
