Some myths live on regardless of the facts, and when it comes to Sarah Palin, they live on with a fury. Palin's speech at CPAC today set off a tirade by a film critic for New York Magazine Bilge Ebiri: And he tweeted a quote supposedly attributing to Margaret Thatcher a refusal to meet Palin because Palin is "nuts" [note - since tweet now removed, it will not show up as normal Twitter embed]: I don't respond to most anti-Palin hysteria, but this looked familiar. The story was false, as I wrote on June 14, 2011, So Now All These People Will Apologize To Sarah Palin About Margaret Thatcher, Right?:
A week ago The Guardian reported that Margaret Thatcher was refusing to meet with Sarah Palin, attributing a quote to an “ally” of Thatcher as follows:
Lady Thatcher will not be seeing Sarah Palin. That would be belittling for Margaret. Sarah Palin is nuts.
The blogosphere, including some conservative and libertarian haters of Palin, erupted in joy, with loads of snark and derision directed at Palin. It turns out that the Guardian story was a hoax, as reported by Nile Gardiner:
I have spoken to Lady Thatcher’s Private Office regarding the story, and they confirm that the attack on Sarah Palin definitely did not come from her office, and in no way reflects her views. As a former aide to Margaret Thatcher myself, I can attest that this kind of thinking is entirely alien to her, and that such remarks would never be made by her office. She has always warmly welcomed like-minded figures in the United States, and has in the past met with numerous US presidential candidates and political dignitaries when they have visited London. But at the age of 85 she is now able to receive very few visitors at all. There was never any snub of Sarah Palin by Lady Thatcher’s office. However, there has been a great deal of mischief-making and unpleasantness from sections of the liberal press in a vain and futile attempt to use Margaret Thatcher’s name to smear a major US politician.
A reader at Gateway Pundit confirmed a similar denial from The Margaret Thatcher Foundation. I can't say I'm surprised Ebiri was misinformed, since the Thatcher quote remains widely cited despite the truth. I repeatedly tweeted Ebiri informing him it was a hoax and he should withdraw the quote:

Everything that’s wrong with the corruptocracy known as Los Angeles is contained in this L.A. Times report about the departure of Tim Leiweke as head of Anschutz Entertainment Group—and there’s little doubt, given how the details were spaced out in the 1,000-word story, that reporters...

Just yesterday the dimwits at Politico were writing her off in their usual demeaning terms. I don't expect she'll be a candidate again, but today she took CPAC by storm, playing an important role outside the Republican Party structure in saying what needs to be said...

The sick BDS movement, Leftist-Islamist coalition, and anti-Israel academic movement are frequent topics here. There is good news -- despite all the hoopla and vitriol, these miscreants have made no progress with American public opinion. Via Times of Israel: Americans’ sympathy for Israel is at a 22-year high, according...

The Obama Administration puts up a forest of shiny objects that can make important developments hard to see. While  Obama's Press Secretary Jay Carney stresses over who-did-what on the cancellation of White House tours, conservative firebrand Tammy Bruce has been sounding the alarm on some developments...

I have been covering California's hate-late relationship with gun rights. The reports have included the fact that gun control groups have target our state for enhanced activism, and that San Diego's Chief of Police has stated that Americans can be disarmed in a generation. Now, it seems...

I should have gone away these few days of the CPAC conference in a deep sea diving bell.  CPAC has been a disappointing spectacle to watch from afar, in more than one way. I can't tell you what it's done for others, but for me it's been a real downer,...

Ann Coulter makes that point about DiFi's response to Ted Cruz, which we featured yesterday. I agree in theory, because Offended should not be an acceptable answer. But, Offended is accepted as an answer virtually everywhere, particularly on campuses, unless the person offended is a...

1) Why is this debate a virtue? Yesterday, I wrote about Joseph Levine's outrageous article at the New York Times arguing that Israel is not a legitimate secular democratic state. At the Daily Beast, Ralph Seliger writes: I think it's odd that we should still be arguing the...

At College Insurrection we reported that, in honor of Rand Paul’s historic filibuster, the head of the Hillsdale College Republicans wanted CPAC attendees standing during the senator's convention speech. It looks like Ryan Bolyard got his wish, as hundred of students chose to #StandWithRand. Josiah Ryan contributed...
