I pointed out in a previous Card Game that the race card was being used to defend Elizabeth Warren, Playing the race card in defense of Elizabeth Warren is a vice. That post revolved around Jehmu Green calling Tucker Carlson a “bow-tying white boy” for questioning Warren’s story.
That was on May 5, just about a week after Warren’s claim to be Native American broke, and as evidence just began to mount that Warren’s claim was untrue.
Yet the use of the race card in defense of Warren has not stopped.
You probably remember how a Daily Kos writer responded at NetRoots when Anne asked whether Elizabeth Warren should apologize to Native Americans (jump ahead to 2:25):
Panel member: I don’t speak to media who have backgrounds of having trashed Indians.
Anne: I have never done that.
Panel member: Excuse me I don’t talk to media who have trashed Indians over this issue, which is what’s been going on…. That because of the racism that’s come out over this, I have my own opinions about it and their not anybody else’s business.
Daily Kos immediately got involved not only by trying to block Anne at the conference, but by playing the race card. While authors are not responsible for comments, the author of the Kos post chose to promote this comment to the top and include it as part of the post update:

The irony, of course, is that no one from Legal Insurrection has used stereotypes like claiming all Indians have high cheekbones:
Tim Stanley at The Daily Telegraph (Britain)(h/t numerous readers) also notes that if roles had been reversed, and it was a Republican falsely passing herself off as minority for professional purposes, it would be the faker who would be called racist, not those exposing the fakery.
Imagine if a Republican candidate claimed, confidently, that she was part Native American. Imagine if she had actually used that identity to have herself listed as a minority at Harvard, qualifying her for special treatment and celebration as proof of how diverse and progressive her department is. Imagine if, many years later, it turned out that her claims to Native heritage were dubious and, when pressed for proof, she offered her “high cheekbones.” Oh, and she once contributed a recipe to a Native American cookbook called “Pow Wow Chow” (that may even have been plagiarised).
Chances are, that Republican candidate would be hounded night and day by the press, branded a racist and probably be winding down her political career.
I think I have this straight, let me know otherwise:
- If a Republican fakes being a minority for professional purposes, the Republican is racist.
- If a Republican criticizes a Democrat for faking being a minority, the Republican is racist.
Is there any scenario under which the Republican would not be racist?
I just want to know. Consider it a theoretical thinking exercise.

If a Republican supports a Democrat for faking being a minority, the Republican is progressive.
They don’t like diversity, of either the individual or feature kind, when it challenges their monochrome dreams.
I write this in a general sort of way, recognizing that there are exceptions on both sides. Generally, the question “Is there any scenario under which the Republican would not be racist?” has an answer of, basically, “no” for Republican and non-Republican alike.
It holds true for Republicans, and those who think similarly, because of their acceptance of various definitions of terms (or, the lack thereof). For example, what is “racist”? Who defines what it is or what isn’t? Is it true that only those who lay claim to having experienced “racism” are allowed to define the words and the terms? Or, do we all “have an iron in the fire”? As long as persons accept now this person calling words or actions “racist” and now that person calling other words and actions “racist” with little in commonality between them; well, then, we’ll be on this cultural merry-go-round.
Secondly, because of the lack of precision and distinction in defining words and actions in an agreed upon manner, such persons (non-Republicans and those think in a manner similar to them) have literally “painted themselves in to a corner.” As soon as one defines what is meant by “racist” it is necessary to use it in a consistent manner. This is something that various persons and groups are not willing to do. They desire the freedom to equivocate whenever, however, and often as they so desire.
So, the sooner Republicans begin to 1) question the use of certain terms and the description of various actions (e.g., what do you mean that such and such is racist?), 2) become assertive in their posture regarding such attacks (just denying, ridiculing, or ignoring them is not doing so), 3) and are able to articulate how they view of our problems and why their solutions are more beneficial to individuals and our society; the sooner we might stop allowing ourselves to be the ones “painted in a corner.”

Lately, it seems as though there can’t be a discussion, let alone disagreement, without someone having a derogatory label “slung” in their direction. Of course, this is a conversation changer or ender and rarely adds to a continuing dialogue.
