Over 1.4 Million Filed Unemployment Claims, GDP Dropped 9.5% in Second Quarter

About 1.434 million Americans filed unemployment claims last week as states issue another shutdown due to spikes in coronavirus cases. The GDP also crashed to a 32.9% annualized rate, which is the biggest drop on record. Overall, the GDP dropped 9.5% between the first and second quarters. But we have to remember the GDP report contains numbers between March and June. It doesn't tell us what is happening now or tomorrow.

The unemployment claims last week went up slightly to 1.416 million. However, continuing claims decreased. That means the unemployment went down a little bit to 11.1%. You need to remember that these numbers lag behind a week.

Unemployment claims continue to tumble! The Labor Department's report states that 1.3 million Americans filed unemployment claims last week, which is down by 10,000 from the previous week. Continuing claims fell by 737,750 to 17.338 million.
