New York’s Legislators Planning to Torch Installation of Gas Stoves in New Homes

New York’s Legislators Planning to Torch Installation of Gas Stoves in New Homes

Tennessee, on the other hand, is becoming a “gas stove sanctuary state”.

Earlier this year, my Legal Insurrection colleague Mary Chastain railed against the federal government moving forward with plans to ban gas stoves.

She wasn’t the only one upset about these Biden administration plans, which are clearly based on pseudoscience. Shortly after the controversy, the propagandists in the media focused on the Republican reaction to the issue.

Republicans tend to be the loudest defenders of natural gas, but gas-powered stoves tend to be most common largely in Democratic-controlled states, my colleagues Elena Shao and Lisa Friedman report. In fact, the state with the highest percentage of households using natural gas for cooking (70 percent) is California, according to a 2020 analysis from the Energy Information Administration.

The New York Times assured everyone that gas stoves were not a target: No One Is Coming for Your Gas Stove Anytime Soon.

Yet it appears that the work around control of another aspect of American life will be accomplished on a state-by-state basis. California has already banned the sale of gas stoves and water heaters by 2030. However, because all appliances eventually need to be replaced, units in existing homes will eventually have to be switched out for the Democrat-preferred electrical units.

Given California’s notorious problems with its electrical grid, it would be wise for Californians to make meal plans that don’t require cooking.

It looks like New York is now heading in the same direction.

New York state lawmakers are poised to enact the nation’s first legislative ban on gas and fossil fuel appliances in most new buildings, including single-family homes.

Despite outcry from Republicans nationwide about states and the federal government looking to ban gas stoves, New York appears set to move forward with the proposal in the state budget due March 31.

The reason a deal looks imminent is because Gov. Kathy Hochul and fellow Democrats in both chambers of the state Legislature have endorsed proposals to prohibit fossil fuel furnaces, water heaters, clothes dryers and gas stoves in most new construction.

New York would be the first to take this step through legislative action; California and Washington have done so through building codes. An agreement has not been finalized to ensure passage, but the new restrictions are included in all three plans being discussed in Albany.

On the other hand, Tennessee is essentially declaring itself a “gas stove sanctuary state.

Republican Gov. Bill Lee has signed legislation that says local governments can’t ban gas stoves, even though no current city in Tennessee is currently pursuing such actions.

The legislation was introduced amid fears from earlier this year that the Biden administration was considering a nationwide ban on gas stoves due to growing health concerns over the appliances. While the White House has said President Joe Biden would not support a ban, a Consumer Product Safety Commission official sparked suspicion when he said “any option is on the table” when it came to regulating gas stoves.

Under the legislation Lee approved last week, local governments cannot regulate the “type of source of energy” delivered to customers for utility service connection or appliances. The legislation went into effect immediately after receiving strong support inside the GOP-dominated Tennessee Statehouse.

An intriguing data point to consider: Tennessee’s population grew by 9% in the last census and is now the 16th most populated state in the nation. New York now leads the nation in population loss, followed by California.

Fun Fact: Tennessee is on the short-list for my new home, which will be accomplished before I can no longer buy either the car I want nor the appliances I prefer because of policies based on narrative science, climate change cultists, and politicians profiting from their connections to green energy firms.

Republicans in the House of Representatives are also trying to prevent bureaucratic bans on gas stoves via legislation.

Two Republicans on the House Energy & Commerce Committee are making a push stop the Biden administration from banning gas stoves with legislation that has support from the committee chairman and could get a vote on the House floor this year.

The bills from Reps. Kelly Armstrong, R-N.D., and Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz., are a response to the two-pronged effort seen by the Biden administration to ban gas stoves this year.

In January, a member of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said a ban on gas stoves was “on the table” because of the health risks they pose to consumers. The CPSC backed down after public outrage and ridicule, but soon after, the Department of Energy proposed an energy-efficiency regulation that officials acknowledge is so stringent that less than 50% of the gas stoves currently in use today wouldn’t make the cut.

These bills are not likely to become law . . . yet.

In response to the oft-quoted “power corrupts…” quote someone said “It’s not so much that power corrupts, it’s that power attracts pathological personalities”

Obama must feel foolish for installing 2500 gal propane tanks at his digs on the vineyard…oh wait, he’s grandfathered in. It’s soooo “light-privilege” to pull up the ladder, isn’t it?

1) Any time that a Democrat, other Leftists, or their media supporters promise that they are not coming for you or anything you own; you can be absolutely sure that they are lying and they are. It is a basic truth of life.

2) If you are not a Leftist ideologue and you do not want to suffer under the Left, it is ten times overpast time to get out of states that they control while you can still convert you assets to something if value. Move to as free a state as you can. California and New York states have been losing people who cannot bear the economic or political tyranny for years.

I have a friend with a sugar bush south of Buffalo. They have spent the last 20+ years growing their farm and business. I talked to her about a year ago now. They would ABSOLUTELY love to leave. But they cannot. Every thing they own is tied up in that Bush.
BUT other than the one son who is looking to take over the Bush when they retire, they are pushing their kids to move out of state.

New Yorkers should switch to coal stoves.

Eric R. in reply to E Howard Hunt. | March 25, 2023 at 3:24 pm

Leftist New Yorkers shold not use ANY stoves. Even if they’re electric, fossil fuels will still be used at the generating plant. They should eat raw food and just wear sweaters and coats in winter – indoors.

It is time to go Galt on this government.
Deny the technical expertise to keep the motors from running.
Let it crash. I’m ready for it!

Communism in Eastern Europe was totally defeated in the 1980’s by work stoppages and general strikes. Time to do that here. Conservatives could starve the dem cities out in a week and take ALL the leftist politics out of them forever. It is within our grasp to do just that. If all the warehouse workers, truckers and train operators stopped what they are doing places like NYC would be begging for food in a week. The cities cannot produce their own consumer goods. They would be helpless!. There are more ways to vote than at the ballot box!

News flash: Electric appliances are also “fossil fuel” appliances since most electric companies generate electricity from….fossil fuels.

“The issue” is never the issue.

“The issue” is not “indoor air pollution” or “quality of life” or public health” or whatever they happen to be pushing at the moment.

The issue is *control.*

They want to tell you where you will live (“15-minute cities”) and how you will live (“do X ‘for the greater good’ “) and what you will eat (hence the push for bugs, fake food, and poop water), how you will spend your money (pushing the “digital dollar,” which will self-expire so forget about saving… and it will only work when used for “approved purchases”), where you will be able to travel (if at all), etc, etc.

Have fun in your upcoming digital prison. You will own NOTHING.. NO THING (not even a toothbrush or underwear…everything will be rented) and YOU WILL BE HAPPY, dammit.

Madness.

The Solution(tm) is telling other people what they can’t do when you can’t do anything useful yourself.

They could do more to improve health outcomes, or decrease carbon by improving state service waiting lines by 10%

BierceAmbrose in reply to BierceAmbrose. | March 25, 2023 at 4:26 pm

It’s about agency — you can’t have any; theirs is only telling you what you can’t do.

CommoChief in reply to BierceAmbrose. | March 25, 2023 at 7:27 pm

Light bulbs, toilets, ICE vehicles, nuke power plants, coal power plants now gas stoves. Don’t forget the same folks telling you that you can’t buy the things you want anymore are also telling us that school choice is a horrible idea.

What health issues? Surely somebody would have noticed long before now.

It’s all about control. Gas stoves work even when you don’t have electrical power.

It would take a heart of stone not to laugh at the notion of NY Democrats slowly freezing to death in the environmentally-correct all-electric abodes when the juice stops flowing in the middle of an Empire State winter.

Here’s a solution. Buy a spare gas heater, stove and whatever else runs on natural gas in 2029. Unless they ban natural gas in California, there’s no law that says you can’t install what you already own.

To be honest, does anyone know of a natural gas stove that went bad other than the control board which can be replaced?

    diver64 in reply to RepublicanRJL. | March 26, 2023 at 1:29 pm

We are still using a 1950’s era Magic Chef in my hunting camp. Works just fine except the spring timer which gave out long ago.

“Cheap” energy means excess resources to consume.

Malthusians know that if they transfer increased costs to energy that folks won’t be able to buy widgets. Less widget demand means less hurt on Gaia.

California’s drive to rid itself of gas will just increase everyone else’s energy costs as well, as the higher demand in California drives up other states energy costs.

Remember that this was part of Obama’s fundamental change. Stopping sea level rise was theater.

Realizing that Republicans have no real reason for being in the New York Legislature, especially since most of them are just Vichy Republicans, still here is what I would like to see attempted as an amendment by them as the natural gas ban passes. It may even draw votes from Leftist legislators who understand neither business nor reality.

The current legislation only applies to new construction. And it has certain exemptions; among which are “commercial kitchens”. If that particular exemption was removed, it would make New York pay the price.

I grew up in restaurants, and paid my way through college working summers in Chinese restaurant kitchens. You absolutely cannot run a restaurant with electric stoves and ovens. Just cannot be done.

So remove the “commercial kitchen” exemption for Mother Gaia.

— no new restaurants in new construction buildings.
— no kitchens in new medical facility buildings.
— no kitchens in new nursing homes.
— no kitchens in new factories,

Let them live what they preach.

Yeah, they’ll do that… just like they took care of the smoky, choky diesel semitrailers first, before the passenger cars, when the goddess of the moment was “air quality.”
