James Devine—the Dem strategist who tweeted #HuntRepublicanCongressmen in the hours following the shooting of Republican Congressman Steve Scalise—was a guest on Tucker Carlson's Fox News show last night. Devine's rambling and confused argument ultimately led Tucker to tell Devine that he is an "unbalanced person." But listen carefully to what Devine said, and you'll detect what amounts to his justification of the Scalise shooting. He first quotes Sen. Rand Paul [whom Devine twice calls "Paul Rand"] to the effect that the purpose of the Second Amendment is to permit people to "shoot at a tyrannical government."

In the wake of the Scalise shooting, Fareed Zakaria hosted a segment on his CNN show this morning devoted to addressing how Republicans and Democrats can stop their "internecine struggle" and "reconcile." Two of the guests bought into the premise, discussing the challenges involved and possible approaches to reconciliation. But the third guest, Jill Abramson, who was fired in 2014 as executive editor of the New York Times, was having none of the kumbaya. To the contrary, she decried a supposed "false equivalency" between Democrats and Republicans. Abramson put the blame on Republicans for the divisive political climate and accused them of "benefiting from a kind of rage machine that operates in this country."

Well that was quick. I can't recall as substantial an assassination attempt against one political party as took place Wednesday morning, June 14, 2017. Certainly there have been individual assassinations and shots fired, such as by Puerto Rican nationalists in 1954, but this was a well planned attempt at mass murder directed against one party. Our prayers are with all the victims, particularly Steve Scalise, who remains in critical condition. But for the chance that Capitol Police officers were assigned to protect Scalise because of his House leadership position, we might be burying dozens of people.

The Congressional Baseball game is a 108-year-old tradition and one of the best annual showings of bipartisanship. This year, a day after Rep. Steve Scalise was shot and severely injured during baseball practice, a public display of unity and civility was desperately needed. And that's exactly what happened.

I am stunned as I write this. A sitting member of Congress, Rep. Steve Scalise, was shot this morning, based purely upon his political beliefs. The shooter, James Hodgkinson, posted many anti-Trump rants on his social media feeds. And, it is reported that before unloading approximately 50 shots at a congressional baseball game, he asked if the group was comprised of Democrats or Republicans.

Wednesday's baseball shooting left several injured and one dead. In things I never thought I'd say, I must agree with both President Trump and Sen. McCaskill -- unity, not division should be the goal at this day's end. It's impossible to ignore the toxic political polarization or that as Professor Jacobson discussed last night, yesterday's events were the unavoidable outcome of years of incitement. This much is pure fact. Did the rhetoric and general political climate play a factor in Hodgkinson's assassination attempt? We don't know. But regardless of all mitigating factors, the only person responsible for Hodgkinson's actions is Hodgkinson.

Yes, let's all come together, hold hands, unite . . . and blame President Trump for the shooting of Steve Scalise and others yesterday. Morning Joe opened today with predictable pieties, Joe Scarborough saying, for example, that "the heated rhetoric in this country has to calm down." But before the show's first hour had ended, Mika Brzezinski turned the heat up to 11 by pointing the finger for the Scalise shooting in part at the president. An emotional Mika, after accusing President Trump of "promoting violence on the campaign trail," continued:
"I'm not putting anything squarely on the president, but I have to say that this is the new added dynamic to what is a very dangerous climate."

The shooting of Republican Congressman Steven Scalise and others during a baseball practice has led to a lot of examination of the anti-Trump, anti-Republican incitement from the mainstream left. While criminal culpability rests with the shooter, there also is no doubt that we are experiencing an unprecedented derangement from establishment Democrats, pro-Democrat media (which is almost all of the mainstream media), the entertainment industry and on campuses. We have been documenting the often violent opposition to Trump for over a year, but particularly since the election. The entire concept of "The Resistance" invokes violence, a deliberate allusion to the resistance movements in World War II Europe.

Gunman James Hodgkison, a Bernie Sanders supporter, opened fire on GOP lawmakers as they practiced for the annual Congressional baseball game Wednesday morning. He shot Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), two Congressional aides, and two members of the Capitol Police force were also shot. Scalise remains in critical condition. Rather than reflect on how we landed at this juncture, these individuals rolled out the gun control mantra.

Wednesday morning at a practice for the upcoming Congressional baseball game, a shooter opened fire injuring House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA). Several aides and Capitol policemen were also injured. Law enforcement identified the shooter as James T. Hodgkinson from Bellville, Illinois. The 66-year-old owns a home inspection business. According to the Washington Post, Hodgkinson, "was charged in April 2006 with battery and aiding damage to a motor vehicle, according to online records in St. Clair County, Ill." The charges were later dismissed.

A gunman opened fire on the GOP baseball practice in Alexandria, VA. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and numerous aides were shot. From Fox News:
The shots were reported on East Monroe Street in Del Ray, Alexandria police said on Twitter at 7:30 a.m. The location was near a YMCA.
