Last year, Melania Trump filed a $150 million defamation suit against UK-based Daily Mail and a Maryland-based blog, Tarply, for alleging the she was once employed by a modeling agency that was actually an escort service. The Daily Mail quickly retracted their post after a complaint was filed and Tarply retracted their post once legal action was threatened. Friday, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Sharon Burrell denied Tarply's requests to dismiss the suit.

Designer Sophie Theallet caused a stir when she announced she would not dress or design for future First Lady Melania Trump and encouraged other designers to follow her. But famous designer Tommy Hilfiger only had praise for Melania:
“I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her. Ivanka is equally as beautiful and smart, although she wears her own clothes. I don’t think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle [Obama] as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You’re not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania.”

Designer Sophie Theallet has announced on Twitter she will not design and dress Melania Trump with her brand: Theallet has designed and dressed First Lady Michelle Obama during the past eight years, which she called "a highlight and an honor." Obama's "values, actions, and grace have always resonated deeply within" the designer. She added:
As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom, and respect for all lifestyles. I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady. The rhetoric of racism, sexism, and xenophobia unleashed by her husband's presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by. I encourage my fellow designers to do the same.
