Readers of Legal Insurrection know who Linc Chafee is. For several years we covered the once-upon-a-time Republican Senator (in a seat he inherited from his father), and Independent former Governor of Rhode Island, is quirky, to put it mildly.

Linc Chafee was the most improbable of Democratic presidential candidates, as I explained when he announced, Wut? Former RI Senator and Governor Linc Chafee for President?
Former U.S. Senator and Rhode Island Governor Linc Chafee has announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee. When Rhode Island reader and blogger Tony emailed me about it, I thought it was a joke. Chafee has a reputation of a buffoonish political character who switches political sides on a whim. On second thought, that may make him perfect as a presidential candidate.... Had I known this would happen, I never would have left Rhode Island. The talk radio is going to be gold, pure gold.
Chafee's candidacy was "pure gold" for talk radio and the national audience when he had some interesting moments on stage.

Lincoln Davenport Chafee, former U.S. Senator and Governor of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Mayor of Cranston, son of the late U.S. Senator John Chafee, and most importantly, farrier extraordinaire, announced this morning that he is abandoning his quest for the Democratic nomination to be President of the United States of America. His campaign never got off the ground. He did little fundraising, and appeared catatonic during the first Democratic debate. Today he dropped out. Watch:

The challengers to Hillary Clinton in the debate last night made Republican undercard competitors seem downright impressive. Martin O'Malley has the vocal quality of elevator music. It reminds me of another voice, I just can't place it. But there's not much there there. Jim Webb seemed off-kilter, complaining endlessly about not getting enough time, and not really scoring any points with Democrats by invoking concepts like love of country and a strong military -- that will not fly in today's Democratic Party. What can we say about Linc Chafee? I thought he had the potential to be aggressive. Those of us who know him from Rhode Island know that while he comes across as a doofus, he can be quite nasty and acerbic. I thought we might get that from him when his opening statement emphasized that he's never had a scandal and is honest -- but he didn't take the shot directly at Hillary and seemed lost on stage. In short, none of the three lower-tiered Democrats scored any points and all seemed afraid to confront Hillary. Hillary was, as Mark Steyn puts it, The Alpha Female of a Beta-Male Debate:

Former Rhode Island Senator and Governor Lincoln Chafee is a confirmed participant in the first Democratic primary debate next Tuesday on CNN. The debate will be shorter than the last Republican event but the smaller number of people on stage means even lower tier candidates like Chafee will get ample time to speak. As a man currently polling at less than one percent, Chafee has nothing to lose. Chafee also is notoriously unfiltered. Expect him to come out swinging at Hillary Clinton. Hard. Chafee has already indicated that he intends to go after Hillary for her Iraq War vote. CNN reported in July:

Anyone who has ever worked for a candidate (or any public figure, really) has had that Oh, God moment. It's the moment that you prepare for, pray will never come, but somehow always manages to sneak up kick the crap out of your best-laid media plans. Democrat almost-candidate for president Lincoln Chafee served his comms shop an Oh, God moment this morning on CNN's New Day when he may or may not have let it slip that his exploratory committee is, at least in his mind, a formality:
After rattling off a list of sins that Hillary Clinton committed as secretary of state, John Berman asked Chafee if he was going hard against her record on purpose. “Yes, that’s why I’m running,” he seemingly confirmed. “Because I feel strong about where we’re going as a country.”

Former Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee announced he was forming a presidential exploratory committee last week, and he's wasting no time going after Hillary Clinton. In an appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe Friday, he suggested that Hillary's vote for the war in Iraq makes her a poor choice for president. Watch: Chafee solves one problem for Democrats by providing Hillary with another challenger but reinforces the idea that the Democratic bench is made up of faces from the past.

Former U.S. Senator and Governor Lincoln Chafee, who slipped quietly out of the State House in January, made a big splash Thursday in local politics by announcing he may run for president in 2016. Chafee made his announcement on his website Chafee2016.com and in a news release in which he said he was announcing the formation of an exploratory committee to consider a run as the Democratic Party nominee. Chafee, a former Republican turned Independent turned Democrat, said he will spend the next few months in New Hampshire, Iowa and other key battleground states, asking voters whether his “independent thinking and fresh ideas for the future” are what is needed in the 2016 presidential campaign.
