2nd Amendment Tag

With presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s recent announcement of Kamala Harris as his running mate, and the Democratic National Convention in full swing, now seems the perfect time to take a closer look at the recently released 2020 Democratic Party Platform on gun control.

Gun sales are way up, across the country, for obvious reasons. The numbers began to rise with the Coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, and only grew as riots began in multiple cities at the beginning of the summer. Now imagine being someone who lives in one of these riot torn cities, where your Democrat leaders are trying to defund the police, and learning that it's going to be difficult to arm yourself.

I'm so old I remember when the media would flop onto the nearest fainting couch at the sight of a protester exercising his or her Second Amendment rights.  Remember the wails of horror, fear, and outrage we were treated to when Tea Party activists and, more recently, anti-lockdown protesters were shown lawfully openly carrying perfectly lawful firearms at protests?

Months ago, when the country shut down and you couldn't buy a roll of toilet paper anywhere, people began arming themselves at an increasing rate. Now that roving mobs of looters and rioters are preying on American cities, gun sales are reaching historic highs.

Republican Governor of Massachusetts Charlie Baker shut down all gun stores in the state as part of a supposedly health-related measure to fight the spread of Wuhan coronavirus. A group of citizens and foundations sued, filing a Motion for a Temporary Restraining Order and Preliminary Injunction (pdf.), seeking among other things, an Order:

A lot has been said in a short period of time about the Supreme Court’s opinion handed down in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. City of New York just a week ago.  Most gun rights supporters are frustrated. Many accuse Chief Justice Roberts of caving to pressure.  Some consider the case to be a complete loss.  In reality, it is just the opposite.

The myriad way state and local governments try to strip away Second Amendment rights is maddening. And almost always, the restrictions come with benign sounding names and acronyms hiding the agenda, like New York's S.A.F.E. Act (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013), a mindblogging mix of requirements meant to make purchasing and owning guns difficult. In California, the state imposed a background check requirement for the purchase of ammunition, an unprecedented move.

Tuesday, Biden got into a shouting match with an auto worker at a plant in Detroit. The worker confronted Biden about his gun confiscation rhetoric. It did not go well. Biden told the worker he was "full of shit," shushed a female staffer, said he was going to slap the guy, pretended the second amendment was for hunting, and talked about AR-14s.
