Emory Prof Claims Second Amendment Was Designed to Keep African Americans Powerless
“the right to bear arms has been consistently used as a weapon to keep African Americans powerless”
This professor seems to be confusing the Second Amendment with the Democrat party.
Campus Reform reports:
Emory Professor: The Second Amendment ‘was designed’ to keep ‘African Americans powerless and vulnerable’
Dr. Carol Anderson, chair of Emory University’s Black Studies Department and author of such works as “White Rage”, recently published a new book where she argues that “[the Second Amendment] was designed and has consistently been constructed to keep African Americans powerless and vulnerable.”
The book, “The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America,” was released on June 1 by Bloomsbury.
In an interview with CNN on May 30, Anderson said that the 2016 shooting of Philando Castile initially inspired her to begin work on the volume.
Later in that interview, Anderson attributes the lack of firearm restrictions following the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary shooting to an “underlying fear that if there are real gun safety laws then Whites will be left defenseless against these Black people.”
“Here was a Black man who was pulled over by police,” Anderson said of the shooting “who followed NRA guidelines in letting the police officer know that he had a license to carry a weapon. And that led to Philando Castile being shot dead.” Anderson went on to criticize the National Rifle Association for not issuing a sufficiently strong statement on the shooting.
Anderson claims on her website that the work is neither “pro-gun” nor “anti-gun” but rather seeks to explore the “citizenship rights and human rights of African Americans.”
The book description states that “the right to bear arms has been consistently used as a weapon to keep African Americans powerless” and that “measures to expand and curtail gun ownership [are] aimed disproportionately at the African American population.”

Totally backwards
Felons are denied 2nd amendment rights and a large percentage of blacks are felons.
She’s a professor, so, she must know what she is talking about. If you question her you are a heternormative white male sexist pig.
Maybe she ought to take a stroll through the south side of Chicago on a summer Saturday evening.
Or, East St. Louis Illinois. Or, Gary Indiana. Or, Flint Michigan. Or Baltimore. Or Anacostia in DC.
Emory’s record on getting gun issues right is, shall we say, much less than checkered.
Arthur Kellerman, author of the infamous study claiming that people who owned guns were 43 times more likely to cause the death of themselves or a family member than defend themselves with it — but counted only “death of the attacker” as a valid measure of self-defense — is an Emory fixture. (A future study he performed “revised” the number 43 down to 2.7 — still wrong, but Student Shows Improvement.)
As was Michael Bellesiles, whose award-winning book “Arming America” (whose premise was that prior to the Civil War or so, Americans really didn’t generally own guns) was revealed as a work of whole-cloth fraud… at least he was an Emory fixture, before Emory was forced to fire him in disgrace.
What would make news is for someone from Emory to publish something about guns that is academically defensible. But I’m still waiting.
That having been said, the NRA did indeed fumble the ball horribly on the shooting of Philando Castile, by not issuing any sort of statement.
But so what? The NRA neither enacts laws nor enforces them, and it certainly has zero record of approval of any laws or any interpretations of the Second Amendment that deny arms to people due to race.
More to the point, the NRA certainly doesn’t (mis)hire or (mis)train police officers in St. Anthony, Minnesota, a staunchly Democrat town in a staunchly Democrat state.
Decades ago the NRA covered the racist roots of much of the gun control laws in the US. The American Rifleman magazine covered the morphing of the N**town Saturday Night Special (an inexpensive smaller handgun) into the then favorite target of the Democrat gun grabbers – the “Saturday Night Special”. Unfortunately for the gun grabbers the Congress thought it would be easy to objectively determine which were these guns and ban them. Turned out some of the inexpensive handguns fared better in destruction testing than expensive models, ending the effort to ban them.
It always starts with the police issue. Police interactions give them an endless source of complaints and causes.
It’s tempting to say, police should minimize those interactions. That’s not fair to lots of people in the black community, but on the other hand the constant blaming of white people generally for black people’s interactions with police is very tiresome.
The problem comes in when a white non-police defender perforates a black perp. At that point, the white defender will be railroaded because armed self defense = lynching or some such rot.
If blacks want to avoid problems with the police they should stop breaking the law.
Emory University student body is 10.4% black or African American. I wonder what portion of the student body takes classes from the Black Studies Department? Rather than the 2nd Amendment, I would argue that a failure to provide a first-rate education is the main tool “to keep African Americans powerless and vulnerable.” During slavery, it was against the law to teach blacks to read. Later, black students attended second rate segregated school. Now that historically white University, like Emory, have integrated, people like Prof. Anderson are encouraging black students to study garbage instead of taking STEM or other pre-professional classes.
It is the ghetto gangster culture that keeps a huge percentage of blacks impoverished and welfare is it’s foundation. The only way to change this is to end welfare for those able to work and this includes women with children.
Wasn’t it the NRA that taught Blacks how to wield firearms against Democrat-KKK assailants?
Seems like the Left is trying to pretzel the amendment that gave Blacks (and others) protection against the Left.
Fake history. Condoleezza Rice begs to differ.
