Powerful 7.7 Earthquake Strikes Panama, Followed by Magnitude 6.6 Shaker
Panama Joins 2026’s Growing Roster of Major Earthquakes.
The immense power of plate tectonics has been on full display in 2026.
Legal Insurrection has covered major earthquakes in the Philippines, Venezuela, Northern California, Japan, the Texas Panhandle, and Indonesia, and also noted Colombia in my September roundup.
Now Panama joins that unsettling roster, with reports that a magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook buildings in the capital, prompted evacuations, and triggered tsunami warnings along the coast. A slightly smaller earthquake followed shortly afterward.
A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Panama‘s southern tip on Friday morning, shaking buildings more than 100 miles away in the capital and prompting evacuations, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A second powerful 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the country later in the day following a series of aftershocks.
The initial quake was centered about 7 miles southwest of the remote community of Pitaloza Arriba and struck at a depth of about 7 miles, the USGS said. The 6.6 magnitude quake came about two and a half hours later, with its epicenter about 8 miles west of Río Grande on Panama’s Pacific coast and a depth of about 6 miles.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had initially warned about the possibility of tsunami waves hitting Panama’s coast, but later said the threat had passed.
Tremors were felt in Panama City, where buildings shook and people evacuated into the streets. Visibly shaken residents gathered outside as they waited for news.

As communities assess the damage, this latest powerful shaker adds another chapter to a year already marked by destructive seismic events around the globe.
At the time of this post’s preparation, reports indicated no fatalities. However, extensive damage is probable.
Footage verified by CNN shows several damaged buildings in Penonome, some 70 miles from the epicenter. One video shows a church with a partially collapsed steeple and another building with a crumbled facade.
In the popular resort town Playa Venao, a multi-story building collapsed and crushed several cars beneath it.
Along the Panama Canal, the Centennial Bridge’s suspension cables were seen shaking as vehicles drove through.
The canal’s authority said operations were continuing as normal and that staff were inspecting facilities for potential damage.
This is the largest earthquake in this region recorded in the US Geological Survey catalog since 1900.
The quake appears to have occurred along the Azuero–Soná Fault System. This major active fault zone in southern Panama runs northwest to southeast across the Azuero and Soná peninsulas. Rocks on either side mainly slide horizontally past one another in a left-lateral direction.
The fault is part of a complex zone of tectonic movement along Panama’s Pacific coast.
Nestor Luque, director of Panama’s geosciences institute, said the quake was triggered by the Azuero Sona Fault System that has long contained a build-up of pressure.
“It’s a system of active faults that occasionally, due to the accumulation of stress, release this amount of energy,” he said.
“The seismic signals have traveled throughout the national territory and that is why it could be felt everywhere.”
In Panama City, Luke said he counted 40 seconds of vibrations, though other areas may have felt even longer tremors.

Panama’s main airport suspended flight operations. However, the Panama Canal is operating as usual.
Tocumen International, the country’s main airport, suspended flight operations and began evacuating passengers, the airport authority said in a statement on social media. The officials said flights would resume once safety inspections of the airport and its air traffic control tower were complete.
Most of the flights bound for Panama City were being diverted to Barranquilla and Cartagena in Colombia, or were circling the area, the airport authority said.
The Panama Canal Authority said in a statement posted on social media that the canal, one of the most vital passageways of international maritime commerce, continues to operate normally following the quake.
Here’s hoping Panama recovers quickly, its communities rebuild safely, and the reports of no fatalities hold as the damage assessments continue.
I am closely monitoring reports of the earthquake in southern Panama. The United States stands with the people of Panama.
At the request of the Panamanian government, the State Department is rapidly mobilizing resources and personnel to assist.

The planet has delivered more than enough reminders this year about the power of plate tectonics. With any luck, this will be the last major earthquake of 2026, and the rest of the year will offer considerably less shaking and a little more peace.
