Antisemitic Crimes in NYC Surging As Mamdani Ignores Another Violent Subway Attack

In January, Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s first month in office, there was a 182 percent rise in antisemitic incidents compared to January 2025, “even as other crimes such as murders and shootings reached record lows,” according to a New York Post report at the time.

It wasn’t a surprise considering it was only a matter of time before the attacks were ramped up by antisemitic thugs who were emboldened that their new mayor was “one of them.” Nevertheless, it confirmed some of the worst fears of Jewish residents in a relatively short amount of time about what the city would be like under Mamdani’s leadership.

Though they claimed they weren’t pressured by Mamdani, in early March, the NYPD conveniently announced that they were going to report on hate crime stats differently, to give “a more accurate representation of confirmed hate crimes” in NYC:

Previously, the department reported alleged hate crimes that were still under review. The NYPD will now report hate crimes that have been investigated and officially confirmed as such by the Hate Crimes Task Force. This updated methodology will provide a more accurate representation of confirmed hate crimes in the city. For the month of February, the NYPD recorded 38 hate crimes.

Mamdani probably thought this would make the year-to-year comparisons on antisemitic incidents look far less troubling.

But he was wrong.

Antisemitic incidents soared in the Big Apple in May, with confirmed incidents rising by 71 percent from the previous year:

Antisemitic hate crimes surged in New York City in the month of May 2026, with a total of 41 confirmed incidents, the New York Police Department (NYPD) announced Wednesday. This marked a 71% increase from the same month in 2025. It also meant that hate crimes targeting Jews made up 60% of all hate crimes in the city last month. The number of reported antisemitic hate crimes was 60, 61% of the total number of reported (unconfirmed) hate crimes.

And when it comes to comparisons of the data on confirmed hate crimes against specific groups, the number of antisemitic incidents for this year far outnumber that of hate crimes against any other specific group, including Muslims:

So far in 2026, there have been 152 confirmed antisemitic hate crimes. There have been 17 confirmed hate crimes against Muslims, 9 against Asian people, and 18 against Black people.

The statistics were reported just days after another violent antisemitic attack happened on the city’s subway system:

Strangely, Mamdani hasn’t found the time to comment on it, though he’s spent plenty of time on X talking about the New York Knicks making the NBA finals and about water bottles at World Cup Games:

Mayor Zohran Mamdani came under fire Thursday for failing to denounce the disgusting antisemitic attack of a Big Apple nurse on the subway — which came as the city saw a shocking 70% spike in anti-Jewish crimes.Hizzoner was ripped by religious advocates and some fellow local pols for his silence after a 23-year-old Jewish woman was assaulted Sunday on a C train by a raging sicko who shouted “Jews are eating kids” at her and ripped out a chunk of her hair.“Four days after a deranged antisemitic woman on the NYC subway brutally harassed and assaulted a Jewish girl ripping out her hair while screaming medieval blood libels like ‘Jews are eating kids,’ Mayor Zohran Mamdani has remained silent,” said Moshe Spern, a public school educator and the head of the advocacy group United Jewish Teachers.[…]Spern added: “When the city’s leader can’t even speak out against raw antisemitic violence invoking the darkest libels of the past, it signals to every hater that such cruelty is tolerable in New York.”

Dr. Jennifer Weber from the Manhattan Institute wrote:

The continued silence from @NYCMayor on this horrific antisemitic subway attack, when there is a 70%+ surge in crimes against Jews, sends a very dangerous message. Public condemnation helps establish social consequences. Silence does the opposite; it normalizes hatred and removes a crucial social deterrent.

NYC Council District 32 rep Joann Ariola had this to say:

The Mayor is trying to paint this picture where everything is all great and rosey, but the reality is that there are a lot of people who feel more unsafe than ever. This year alone we’ve already seen 152 hate crimes against Jewish New Yorkers, and no matter how much the Mayor wants to ignore what’s happening, this is a problem that’s only going to get worse unless a strong message is sent to control it.

Anyone waiting on Mamdani to send such a message would be wise not to hold their breath, because it’s not coming.
