House Democrats, Media Lose It Over GOP Parental Rights Bill
“Bills like this make schools more hostile. And make no mistake, it results in hate, bigotry and, yes, sometimes death of our students in schools.” – Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.)
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin was elected in 2021 in large part thanks to his pledge to honor the rights of parents after his Democrat opponent Terry McAuliffe said the quiet part out loud during a debate about how he believed parents should have no say in what their children were taught in the public school system.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis easily won reelection by historic margins in his state in 2022 even after being relentlessly vilified by the press and Democrats over, among other things, his signing of the Parental Rights in Education bill into law in March 2022.
So you’d think with all of that in mind that Congressional Democrats would have learned their lesson when a bill modeled in part on the Florida law was introduced in the U.S. House earlier this month.
But House Democrats being House Democrats steamrolled ahead with again falsely claiming that another parental rights bill was code for “Don’t Say Gay.” And on Thursday with the bill set to pass mostly on party lines, they went crazy, engaging in scare tactics and claiming all sorts of things that weren’t true about the legislation since scaring people is one thing Democrats do very well.

Before we get started on the Democrat meltdowns, let’s note that five Republicans voted with Democrats against the bill:
H.R. 5 passed in a 213-208 vote Friday morning, with five Republicans — Reps. Andy Biggs, Ken Buck, Matt Gaetz, Mike Lawler and Matt Rosendale — joining all Democrats to vote against the measure.
Their reasons, which mostly revolved around believing the federal government shouldn’t be involved in state/local education matters, are noted here.
As for Democrats, their reasons had everything to do with being “woke” and little to nothing to do with caring about children and the rights of their parents to have a voice in their child’s education.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, for instance, laughably claimed that the bill “put politics over parents,” said it had nothing to do with parental rights, and suggested that Republicans were “jamming the extreme Republican MAGA ideology down the throats of the children and the parents of the United States of America” He later lied and said that “extreme MAGA Republicans” were opposed to children learning about the Holocaust:

“This Republican bill is asking the government to force the outing of LGBT people before they are ready,” Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez proclaimed while gesturing wildly:

Reading between the lines, disgraced former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz alleged in so many words without evidence that it was only a minority of parents who were concerned about what children were being taught in schools:

Freshman Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL), who has been busy auditioning to be the next member of AOC’s Squad, claimed that “Bills like this make schools more hostile. And make no mistake, it results in hate, bigotry, and, yes, sometimes death of our students in schools.”

Frost also stated that the bill was “about the fear of a problem that doesn’t exist,” which lets you know that the problem absolutely does exist.
Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL) said the bill was “disgraceful” and that it would “terrorize” teachers:

Meanwhile, PBS turned to Washington Post associate editor and MSNBC weekend host Jonathan Capehart for what amounted to the definitive ‘media’ hot take on the House GOP’s parental rights legislation after being teed up by host Amna Nawaz with a map helpfully provided by the radical left-wing group Human Rights Campaign:
[PBS Host Amna Nawaz]: This is a map, just out this week, from the Human Rights Campaign. They now estimate, of all the transgender kids across the country, age 13-to-17, just that age group, more than half of them now live in a state where they have either already lost access to or could lose access to gender-affirming care. It’s over 50% now.
And Jonathan, I want to turn to you on this because that’s a striking number first of all when you think of the sheer volume of children who are impacted by that, but I’m wondering why you think this particular issue resonates so deeply right now.
CAPEHART: Because it makes people feel uncomfortable. Let’s just be perfectly frank about it. It makes people uncomfortable.
But just because you’re uncomfortable doesn’t mean that you then target what makes you uncomfortable. And by target, you’re targeting kids. You’re targeting the families of those kids, making it impossible for them to get health care in their own home state, making it almost impossible for them to go out of state, criminalizing, in some cases, going out of state to get care.
All these kids and their families want are for these trans kids to be able to go to school like everyone else, learn like everyone else, and be left alone like everyone else, if possible, and to be able to learn in a classroom environment where there’s neither a target on their back or they’re not being denied the full history, the full curriculum that they’re supposed to be taught.
Watch:
Capehart, I should note, was married in January 2017 to his boyfriend Nick Schmit, a State Dept. official, in a ceremony tearfully officiated by then-President Obama’s former Attorney General Eric Holder.
Republicans have to be loving the fact that Democrats and the mainstream media are falling in line all over again with the same talking points that failed them in 2021 and 2022 on bills that have to do with parental rights. Rest assured that many of these video clips will be used against Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats in battleground parts of the country in 2024.

This is an example of how engaging in the culture war issues pays incredible political dividends. The HoR majority is following the leadership offered by a number of Governors on this issue. No serious person argues against these modest proposals, only hacks and the average voters have begun to pay attention.
Matt Gaetz opposes….so interesting.
Blah blah fed gov. This takes away fed gov power and puts it in the hands of parents in the community.
No, it doesn’t take away fedgov power at all. It takes away some measure of stategov power, which some states have been abusing. Those who aren’t abusing it won’t miss it.
I actually agree with the education should be a state/local policy and funding issue. But WHILE federal dollars go out, then Washington D.C. can attach policy and mandates that go with the money.
So until they Department of Education is defunded/closed/etc, then yes it perfectly acceptable .
Goetz was pretty clear in why he voted against it. He doesn’t want Federal involvement in local education and thinks the bill would strengthen the Federal Dept of Education which he want’s to abolish.
America sure does elect a lot of bottom-feeding imbeciles to Congress.
Bottom-feeding imbeciles – and, I believe, rigged voting machines – are electing them.
In the Islamic concept of war, the House of War v. the House of Islam, there is no sense of ceding. So, if at one time Muslims ruled a particular land area, lets choose Israel to give an example, though Spain, Greece, the Balkans would also serve, that land area rightfully belongs to Muslims. For all time.
Similarly with the left and its Democrat wing. In their playbook control of children is theirs and has always been their. Ceding any control to parents is impossible.
Won’t see the light of day says schumer.
Big surprise. Democrats are racists and fascist haters.
Still waiting for the repubs to tell us all about how if we give them a majority that THIS time they’ll do it all differently.
Last time they had full control they bent the knee to anyone who printed a mean word about them.
Cortez has no idea why she says what she says. She just says it because it gets her picture on blogs like this.
The bigger question: why is this blog featuring anything coming from the mouth of this idiot and giving her air?
That’s like asking why Highlights Magazine depicts Goofus at all, instead of only Gallant.
Washington DC sounds like a buffet place salad bar. Word Dalad a la AOC, Word Salad a la Jeffries, Word Salad a la Harris, Word Salad with Frost-ing.
Democrats know the days of public unions, like teachers unions, are going away someday. Without public unions, Democrats will lack a major source of financing for their agenda.
Without teachers unions, all these “educators” flying their freak flags would be fired in a heartbeat.
From the linked Hill article:
This is true, of course. Congress has no authority to legislate about how states should run their schools. So how did they do it? The answer is very simple. This bill seeks to amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 6311), which begins: “For any State desiring to receive a grant under this part, the State educational agency shall….”.
So Congress got involved with public schools in 1965, by means of making grants to the states tied to certain conditions. The states are free to apply for the grants and comply with the rules, or not apply and do as they please. That makes it constitutional. This bill, if the Dems would let it pass in the senate and the president wouldn’t veto it, would simply add to those conditions.
Now these five “no” voters might say they’d prefer to repeal the 1965 act altogether, stop making the grants, and stop laying down conditions for them. So let them move to do that. But so long as states are being bribed to comply with rules Congress made for them, these provisions should be added to those rules. Not adding them doesn’t fix the principle; it just means the states who are abusing parents will be able to continue doing so without having to forfeit their grants.
Exactly. We have to work within the reality of the systems we have and this bill does that.
I try to feel bad for the state Dept of Eds, but, since they do exactly this to parents and kids …. nope. Ennnnnngh. Maxium effort!
Nope, still can’t get there.
“The states are free to apply for the grants and comply with the rules, or not apply and do as they please.”
And not get back what was already extracted from them by force unless they play along. Less “carrying charges”, of course.
“But so long as states are being bribed to comply…”
“Giving back” stuff they took by force — Less “carrying charges”, of course. — if you do what you[‘re told seems like coercion at least twice. When they take so much that you need some of it back to do your thing at all … seems pretty coerce-y.
The Feds have been using this scam to extend their reach beyond their authorization since The Supremes declared it legal. Obviously not about doing the things they’re tasked with, rather about looking for more ways to muck with the people they oversee, without getting permission. Res ipsa loquitur.
Nothing was “already extracted from them by force”. The states don’t pay federal taxes. US taxpayers do. In 1965 congress offered to give the states some of the money it extracts from US taxpayers, if the states comply with certain conditions. That’s entirely a benefit to the states that apply for and qualify for these grants. It’s not as if those states would otherwise have the money; at best they’d have to take it by force from their state taxpayers. Now they don’t have to. The taxpayers, state or federal, have no role in this matter other than to keep paying.
I actually just replied to your other post about this very fact.
Just replied to your other post about this very fact.
“House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, for instance, laughably claimed that the bill “put politics over parents,” said it had nothing to do with parental rights, and suggested that Republicans were “jamming the extreme Republican MAGA ideology down the throats of the children and the parents of the United States of America”
Funny. I recognized only two names out of that list of five Republicans who voted against, and they were both major MAGA. (Sorry, just don’t recognize the others.)
“Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz:
A Parents’ Bill of Rights “hands a vocal and extreme minority of parents the power to dictate what every American child learns.”
If it comes down to a vocal and extreme minority of parents, or a vocal and extreme minority of mentally-ill groomers, I’m with the parents.
Difficult to indoctrinate children is you don’t have total control of the public school system. It should make everyone pause when Dems fight so hard to stop parents from having any say over what kids are taught in schools and, in fact, fight just as hard to keep it secret.
AND equally as hard to make sure the kids can’t escape the public system.
Hakeem does not want the extreme MAGA Republican ideology jammed down the throats of children. I wonder what Hakeem does want jammed down the throats of children. Interesting choice of words from Hakeem.
Abolish government schools, period
The Transgenders are the Vanguard of the Woke Cultural Revolution. They are even more than that – they are the point of the spear. Their purpose is to destroy the pre-existing social order and replace it with woke communism. That is why the Democrats defend Transgenderism so fiercely.
Transgender spectrum? Trans/homos were never hunted, never aborted, never Planned, males were at greatest risk in couplets, females in diverse communities. Trans/neos fail in the majority with transgender conversion therapy, Levine’s dreams of personal affirmation.
That said, In America the girls breed for two fathers, take a knee to a father identifying as a mother, sacrifice babies for medical progress, and stay home for the cargo cult. The boys are groomed by men in authority, assaulted by black… person of color male serial rapists. Lose your Pro-Choice ethical religion.
Their reasons, which mostly revolved around believing the federal government shouldn’t be involved in state/local education matters . . .
So does that mean the democrats believe that they should eliminate the federal department of education? You know the federal department created to constantly interfere with state/local education matters?
That specific sentence was referring to the 5 Republicans who voted against the bill, so the answer would be yes, they want to eliminate DOE.
How about… state and local governments don’t get to operate schools, full stop?
While we await major amendments to the constitution of every state, this bill would make for a distinct improvement on the miserable public K-12 that we presently suffer under.
I was dismayed to learn (upon moving here) that free state education through college was a state constitutional right. Damn Progressive-era politicians. They did get the judge recall thing right though.
