Campus Reform reports:

SUNY Old Westbury offers Black Lives Matter course for mandatory DEI requirement

The State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury offers more than 120 course listings that fulfill a mandatory Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice (DEISJ) general education requirement, including classes on Black Lives Matter, policing, and mass incarceration.

The requirement applies to students who entered the Long Island, New York, university in fall 2023 or later. Students must complete the DEISJ requirement to graduate, but they can choose among numerous approved courses.

The university’s official DEISJ course list, updated April 14, includes PH2900, “Black Lives Matter: Health Inequities in the US,” CR3117, “Policing Bodies,” and PH3750, “Mass Incarceration: A Public Health Crisis.”

Other approved courses include EL4050, “Lesbian & Gay Literature,” HI4420, “Women & Witchcraft,” and PE4450, “The Politics of Gender and Sexuality in the U.S.”

The requirement also extends beyond courses explicitly focused on race, gender, and sexuality. Students can receive DEISJ credit for BU4110, “Organizational Behavior & Management,” HI3006, “Environmental Ethics,” and IR3300, “Collective Bargaining & Grievance Procedure.”

Several courses satisfy multiple general education requirements. For example, “Black Lives Matter: Health Inequities in the US” and “Mass Incarceration: A Public Health Crisis” also fulfill the university’s U.S. History and Civic Engagement requirement.

Old Westbury’s Liberal Education Curriculum requires students entering in fall 2023 or later to complete coursework across 10 general education domains, including DEISJ, mathematics, natural sciences, humanities, and U.S. history.

Students must earn at least a D- or credit designation to satisfy each domain requirement. The university also notes that SUNY requires students to complete at least 30 general education credits.
