Senator Lindsey Graham Dies Suddenly at Age 71, Following a Brief Illness

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina died late Saturday night, quite suddenly, apparently after a brief illness. It’s absolutely shocking news, especially because there were no prior indications of him being in poor health.
His official Twitter/X account announced it.

Graham was an important and influential member of the Senate GOP, and also a great ally and friend of President Trump.

Sen. Lindsey Graham dies at 71 after ‘brief and sudden illness’
Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who was elected to the Senate in 2003 and was a close political ally of President Donald Trump, has died, his office confirmed early Sunday. He was 71.
Graham died Saturday night “from a brief and sudden illness,” his office said in a statement.
“Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period,” the statement continued.
Graham was chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and was seeking a fifth six-year Senate term in November. He was one of the most well-known members of the chamber and a key voice within the party on defense and international affairs.
Emergency personnel responded to a call for “cardiac arrest” at Graham’s Capitol Hill home on Saturday night, according to police scanner audio obtained by NBC News.
Photographs reviewed by NBC News show that paramedics carried a person on a stretcher from Graham’s home to an awaiting ambulance. Police cars and fire trucks were also on site.
Graham was fresh off a trip to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. He had been scheduled to appear on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

Graham was born in Central, South Carolina, on July 9, 1955. He attended University of South Carolina for his undergraduate degree and stayed on for a law degree. After a stint in the military and a few years of private law practice, he served one term in the South Carolina House of Representatives. Two years later, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing South Carolina’s Third District.
In 2002, he ran for the Senate seat once occupied by Strom Thurmond, and twice won reelection in 2008 and 2014 by robust margins. And even in 2014 when outside conservative groups threatened him with a primary challenge for his role in the 2013 immigration debate, no serious challenger emerged on the Republican stage.

I will give condolences. The former Senator was a neocon and was never held to account. Governor McMasters has a chance to give South Carolina a real conservative in the Senate to replace Mr Graham.
LG was up for election this fall. IN SC, the governor may appoint. So:
a) governor appoints and the appointee must run in the fall election to finish LG’s term, which expires in January 2027
b) the appointee must also fun, in the same election this fall, for the next term in the Senate, beginning in 2027.t
I suppose it is possible that an appointee could decline the run in election b) just wanting to complete LG’s term, but this seems unlikely to me

While I’m not as paranoid as most, he dies shortly after a visit with Zelenskyy is only a little bit suspicious.
If I recall correctly, LG was one of Zelensky’s staunchest supporters… for all that’s worth now in this post-Ukraine-mania era.
I jokingly asked if it was something he picked up in Ukraine. I did not realize that he was posting from Kiev the day before he died.
I don’t believe he was murdered. But, I would run a tox screen on the body if I was in charge.
He could have brought home some bad blow, a gift from Z. No intent to do him harm, just an unfortunate series of events.
Judging from the announcement, more likely a stroke or a heart attack. But enjoy the conspiracy theories if you want.

So vague and general is the “news” of Graham’s death, that speculation runs rampant, most of it absurd. I do hope a toxicology report is performed to look for a case of possible Russian poisoning. Either that, or the clot shot?

TBH I though he was looking poorly the last few times I saw him on camera, a bit pale and haggard. I had issues with some of Sen Graham’s policy preferences. The thing we should or at least I am drawing from this is he hit his 3 score and 10 and 71 isn’t ‘young’ despite medical advances and an increase in average life expectancy. IOW there’s a limited time on earth so be a good human being, hug your children, make peace with folks where possible, observe your religious beliefs if you hold them and don’t pretend there’s time ‘tomorrow’ to do those things.

A very interesting fact. The average I spent has increased greatly over the last hundred years and 200 years. Most of that is actually attributed to infant mortality. Infants in the past often died, which is why families had five and six and seven children to make sure they were at least a few that would survive. The infant mortality rate is functionally zero in western civilization, which is the reason for most, although not all of the increased lifespan.
Sure, it’s well established that massive reduction in childhood deaths, particularly infants, accounts for much of the increase. Even a hundred years ago childbirth itself was still very dangerous, far more than today.
More interesting to me is the difference between life expectancy of various ages of adulthood. Accord to SSA actuarial table:

All adult males. By comparison a newborn male has a projected life expectancy of 75.79. It seems that males past childhood, their reckless teen years and military age and/or aged out of highly dangerous physical occupations/activities who have decent genetics, didn’t smoke/drink to excess, are active/exercise, keep a ‘healthy’ weight should expect to remain around quite a bit longer than those in their birth age cohort who don’t fit those criteria.
