Asked to Cite a Single Obama Accomplishment, Visitors to His Presidential Center Come Up Empty

On Thursday, Johnny Belisario, a producer for Fox News’s Jesse Watters Primetime, conducted a series of “man-on-the-street” interviews with visitors to the newly opened Barack Obama Presidential Center. He had one question: “What has been Barack Obama’s greatest accomplishment?”

The results were startling. Remarkably, none of the people interviewed — visitors who respected Obama enough to honor his legacy at his presidential center — could name a single success.

One middle-aged woman said, “Right now it is, you know, I can’t remember, it was a lot.”

A second woman replied, “I can’t think now. You caught me off guard. … Somebody help me out.”

“I’m gonna have to say just being there,” another responded.

Finally, Johnny approached an elderly couple, who appeared genuinely amused by the question. The man, laughing, said, “Being black.” The woman added, “Staying black.”

Well, none of that sounds like a ringing endorsement of our 44th president, does it?

But their inability to answer the question is completely understandable. I’d draw a blank as well. Because what comes to mind are not Obama’s legislative achievements, but his failures.

His signature “accomplishment” was the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. Touting the legislation prior to its passage, he famously promised, “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it.” He also claimed that premiums for a typical family would fall by up to $2,500 per year.

Neither claim turned out to be true. While the ACA may have extended health coverage to the uninsured, Americans not receiving subsidies — in other words, most Americans — were left paying substantially higher premiums for diminished coverage.

But perhaps Obama’s most consequential failure was his role in setting back race relations in the United States. As the nation’s first black president, he was handed a unique opportunity to build on the tremendous progress the country had made in the decades following the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

As I wrote in a recent post:

Instead, neither he nor Michelle Obama appeared willing to abandon the identity politics that shaped their worldviews. The rhetoric may have evolved, but the underlying framework remained the same: black versus white, oppressed versus oppressor, grievance versus responsibility. Rather than encouraging Americans to see one another as fellow citizens, Obama often reinforced the notion that they belonged to competing groups with competing interests.

It is little wonder, then, that polls consistently show majorities of Americans believed race relations deteriorated during his presidency. For all of his soaring promises of unity, Obama’s legacy on race remains far more divisive than transformative.

His rhetoric on the 2024 campaign trail, particularly his shaming of black men who would not line up behind Kamala Harris, made clear that he still sees the world through a rigid racial lens, and Americans, less as individuals than as members of racial voting blocs.

Finally, Obama never left Washington as presidents typically do when their terms end. Except for state funerals and campaign events during presidential election cycles, we rarely see ex-presidents.

There was a reason for that.

Rather than fully exiting the stage, Obama appeared determined to keep his hands on the levers of power in Washington. Operating from the shadows, he remained an active force in Democratic politics, shaping the party’s agenda and exerting influence well beyond the end of his presidency.

And, as Biden’s cognitive decline became impossible to ignore, many Americans came to suspect that real authority rested not with the elected president, but with a small circle of unelected advisers — with Obama widely believed to be among the most influential.

His involvement became particularly apparent in the tumultuous weeks after Biden’s disastrous debate performance in June 2024. From behind the scenes, Obama reportedly played a central role in the effort to force Biden’s ouster from the race.

Chicago-based journalist John Kass, who has known Obama for decades, published a brutal article at the time about the “coup” to remove Biden. Its title? “Obama Leaves No Fingerprints Behind.”

Referring to Biden’s exit from the race, Kass asked, “But where was Barack Obama, author of the coup, to push old Joe Biden off the cliff?”

“Obama was nowhere, the way he likes it,” Kass wrote. “No Obama fingerprints on the blade in Biden’s back. He was nowhere, man. Obama and Kamala and the herd of weasels who lied to the American people, insisting like the idiot mop-head press lady that Joe Biden was at the top of his game though all close to him knew he was a drooling puddle of goo. And they got away with it for years too.”

“But the main thing I’ve learned about the silky Obama over the years, is that he never stands up to face his enemies.” Kass added, “This littlefinger works from the shadows, through lickspittles, and never shows himself. Obama is the one-eyed jack who never lets you see the other side of his face.”

Too bad Kass wasn’t visiting the Presidential Center that day. He would have given Johnny an earful.

For everyone else, their silence was telling. If Obama’s own admirers couldn’t identify a defining accomplishment at the dedication of his presidential center, it’s hardly surprising that so many Americans continue to remember his presidency more for its failures than its successes.
