“Cut the Check”: Reparations Protesters Surround Steyer

Tom Steyer, the San Francisco hedge fund billionaire, former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, and current California gubernatorial candidate, was surrounded yesterday by a crowd of reparations activists on Degnan Boulevard in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles after video surfaced showing demonstrators blocking Steyer’s black SUV and shouting demands that he “cut the check.” According to people on the scene, it took a California Highway Patrol escort to extract Steyer from the scene.
This is hilariously representative of the modern Democrat party.

The video itself shows a chaotic scene. Protesters crowded around the SUV while Steyer remained inside alongside members of his security detail. Demonstrators repeatedly shouted questions about reparations and referenced Steyer’s rhetoric during his 2020 presidential campaign.

Another man repeatedly yelled, “Don’t move that motherf***ing car!”
The confrontation landed awkwardly for Steyer because reparations and progressive economic policies have been central to his political brand for years. During his 2020 presidential campaign, Steyer publicly endorsed reparations for slavery and argued racial inequities were embedded throughout American public policy. He also founded NextGen America, a progressive PAC focused on climate, health care, and reproductive rights, and has spent years cultivating relationships with left-wing organizations.

Earlier this month, reports claimed that Steyer had emerged as a favorite among California progressives despite longstanding skepticism toward billionaires within the Democratic Party. The outlet described his rise as an “unexpected alliance with progressives,” noting that groups aligned with Sen. Bernie Sanders and other left-wing activists had rallied behind him in the California governor’s race.
“The most energizing and ideologically aligned candidate just happens to be a billionaire.”
That tension appeared to spill directly into the street confrontation in Los Angeles, where activists aggressively demanded answers from Steyer over reparations promises they believe Democrats have failed to deliver.
California’s reparations task force issued sweeping recommendations in 2023, including proposals for direct payments that could reach hundreds of thousands of dollars per eligible individual. The legislature held hearings and passed symbolic measures. Governor Newsom vetoed five related bills last year. Nothing was paid.
Exactly what triggered the confrontation, whether Steyer addressed the crowd directly, and the extent of any police response remain unclear based on the currently available footage. What is visible on video is a crowd of activists surrounding one of California Democrats’ leading gubernatorial candidates and demanding reparations payments directly outside his SUV window — the same candidate who spent years telling those voters he was the one willing to deliver.

I want to know 2 things.
1) Did his security detail have weapons?
2) Was the SUV an EV or not?
3) Why did this merit police intervention and how long did it take for them
to get there?

I AM having trouble guessing which two of the three he wants to know about. I’ll speculate that ztakddot is willing to stipulate that the SUV is an EV, leaving the other two questions.

Although I am a sweet naive summer child I would guess that the real organizer of protest is a paid operative of some other candidate although the crowd are merely useful idiots are unaware of that.

Why pander to just the blacks? Other people of all colors were enslaved or the white word, indentured servants.
Well, historically the U.S. has aligned about 45% Democrat and 45% Republican plus or minus a percentage point here and there. Equally either party has roughly the same number within that percentage who can be reliably expected to turn out and vote.
Thus elections are decided by the marginal voters – the ones who will show up at the polls only if they can be agitated enough to show up. Blacks tend to be a highly emotional group of voters whom -if they can be stimulated to show up to vote- will comprise the three or four percent of votes necessary to tip the scales, and almost always towards the Democrats. They are easily manipulated by cries of racism against them and the promise of more benefits for them.
Obama’s election was a good example – his race guaranteed a large black turnout and a additional number of “idealists” who thought that the idea of a black president was, well, cool, especially when he promised “Hope And Change” and free Obama phones.
Alternately Trump was elected the second time because blacks stayed home and a sufficient number of independents and others who don’t usually vote were horrified enough by conditions to tip the scales by that few necessary percent.
Note: for simplicity’s sake I have left out question of election fraud from mail-in ballots etc, etc. My personal thought is that this only comprises one or two percent of the overall vote but it is so concentrated in certain urban areas that it may comprise twenty-five or thirty percent in those areas with the urban concentration of black voters doing the rest of the job. Hence, Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia, and others.

And that went over as well with the actual base as, “the most energizing and ideologically aligned candidate just happens to be our brain-dead president… scratch that, I mean our alcoholic vice president.”
How about Steyer seeding a Go Fund Me page with, say, 80% of his wealth and get all his Democrat buddies to contribute such as George Soros, Gov Pritzker, Gov Newsom, and all who feel so particularly overcome by guilt for things that no one alive did but somehow want the public to pay? How about a little “charity begins at home” attitude and action?

I can see the rationale for reparations to America’s blacks. But I could approve only if the issue were internationalized.
As major purveyors of the Transatlantic slave trade, Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands, and Britain would have to pony up. Since much of Italy and all of Belgium and Luxembourg were under Philip II of Spain, while Ireland was under the Stuarts of Britain, those countries would also be required to contribute. As heir of the Brandenburgers who also traded on the Guinea Coast, the Germans would have to pay. Denmark and Norway would, too–as would Iceland. Sweden colonized part of Delaware and NJ, and would have to contribute. As former colonizer of Tobago, Latvia, heir of the Ducy of Courland, would need to contribute.
Having taught the Portguese and Spanish that Subsaharan folk make good slaves, the Maghreb countries of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya would be required to contribute. As heirs of the initial catchers and sellers of slaves, all African states from Mauretania down to Angola should also be made to pay up. Since Ghana proposed reparations before the UN, I’m sure they’ll use some of their heritage as the Gold Coast to pay some reparations, too.
Our Latin American and Caribbean neighbors–especially the latter–often served as way stations for the traffic of slaves to what would become the USA. They would also be required to pony up. I’m sure Cuba, with its consistent stand for social justice, would certainly contribute some of its sugar and cigar revenue and put its people under further rationing and austerities in order to promote social justice for oppressed African-Americans..
