Schumer: ‘SAVE Act Would Impose Jim Crow Style Restrictions on Voting’

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer invoked Jim Crow regarding the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which requires proof of citizenship to register to vote.
I have said it before and I’ll say it again, the SAVE Act would impose Jim Crow-type laws to the entire country and is dead on arrival in the Senate,” Schumer said in a statement on Monday. “It is a poison pill that will kill any legislation that it is attached to. If House Republicans add the SAVE Act to the bipartisan appropriations package it will lead to another prolonged Trump government shutdown.
Let’s be clear, the SAVE Act is not about securing our elections. It is about suppressing voters. The SAVE Act seeks to disenfranchise millions of American citizens, seize control of our elections, and fan the flames of election skepticism and denialism.
The SAVE Act is reminiscent of Jim Crow era laws and would expand them to the whole of America. Republicans want to restore Jim Crow and apply it from one end of this country to the other. It will not happen. Democrats will go all out to defeat the SAVE Act and defend free and fair elections.
The SAVE Act would impose Jim Crow style restrictions on voting. It will be dead on arrival in the Senate.

The only people oppressed by the SAVE Act would be illegal aliens and others who are not allowed to vote.
The House passed Rep. Chip Roy’s (R-TX) SAVE Act in April 2025.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced an updated version at the end of January, which includes photo ID:
- Requiring individuals to present an eligible photo identification document before voting. (NEW provision)
- Requiring states to obtain proof of citizenship – in person – when registering an individual to vote. (From original SAVE Act)
- Requiring states to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls. (From original SAVE Act)
“The SAVE America Act makes our original SAVE Act better. President Trump rightly believes we should include Voter ID in this bill as we make a renewed push to secure our elections and protect the rights of American voters,” said Lee and Roy. “By requiring Voter ID and proof-of-citizenship, the SAVE America Act will ensure that our federal elections are decided by U.S. citizens—and U.S. citizens alone.”
The Democrats got their panties in a wad in 2021 over Georgia’s supposedly Jim Crow laws, calling them Jim Crow 2.0, pressuring MLB to move the All-Star Game out of Atlanta.
President Joe Biden slightly softened his view when he said, “It’s up to the Masters” to move the prestigious golf tournament from Georgia.
The Masters had a spine, unlike MLB, and didn’t move.

Lucifer, Australia does not require any form of ID whatsoever to vote. Not even a signature, which even the totally lax NYC requires. A voter is simply asked for his name and address, and whether he has already voted in this election. If he appears on the roll, and says he hasn’t yet voted, he is automatically given a ballot.
Yes, they do Milhouse. Australian voters are required to state their name and address. And if they cannot verify that information that is on the voter rolls then they are required to provide proof of identity to vote. If required, accepted forms of ID include a driver’s license, passport, or other government-issued identification. If a voter cannot provide sufficient identification, they can still cast a provisional vote, which will be counted if their identity is verified later.
You also need ID to register to vote in any Australian federal election. So there’s also that.
So yes Milhouse, Australia has voter id requirements.. They are not like the strict requirements like we have in the United States but they are Voter ID requirements none the less.

Wrong. There is no verification of the roll. If the name and address are on the roll, and the voter states that he has not yet voted, he is given a ballot and marked off as having voted.
Now if the person is NOT on the roll, and claims they should be, then they can cast a provisional ballot
As for registering, one method of “ID” that is accepted is simply to have an existing voter vouch for you. If an existing voter signs the registration form and attests that they know you to be who you say you are, that’s enough to get registered. Then when you go to vote you just give the name and address you gave when you registered, and Bob’s your uncle. No actual ID is needed at any stage of the process. You can see how this would work in Chicago or Philadelphia.
