Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) continues to be a thorn in President Donald Trump’s side.
Tillis has now threatened to block any Trump nominee to the Federal Reserve, including the Federal Reserve Chairman, over the investigation into current Chairman Jerome Powell.
Tillis wrote on X:
If there were any remaining doubt whether advisers within the Trump Administration are actively pushing to end the independence of the Federal Reserve, there should now be none. It is now the independence and credibility of the Department of Justice that are in question.
I will oppose the confirmation of any nominee for the Fed—including the upcoming Fed Chair vacancy—until this legal matter is fully resolved.

Word leaked on Sunday night about the federal investigation into Powell’s renovation of the Fed’s headquarters, estimated to cost $2.5 billion.
Powell claimed the investigation is retaliation over monetary policies.
Tillis’s threat carries weight because he sits on the Senate Banking Committee.
A no from him could mean the committee blocks a nominee, keeping the nominee from reaching the Senate floor.
Tillis already vowed to block any DHS nominees until Secretary Kristi Noem testifies before the Senate.
According to Tillis, Noem has not answered requests to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
“My chairman has made two requests in this Congress to have the Homeland Security Secretary come before the committee, and they have yet to confirm that they’re coming,” Tillis said last week, as reported by Fox News. “That is unacceptable, and so I am putting a hold on anything related to Homeland Security measures until we get an agreement and a scheduled time to come for committee at the least.”
In June, Chairman Chuck Grassley asked Noem to appear before the committee in June and September.

Irrespective of Powell’s screw-up or worse, it’s probably not worthwhile for President Trump to go after him because of the RINO issue. What would be preferable is for President Trump to take away control of the rebuilding of the Fed building and give it to another agency to handle.

I don’t disagree in principle. My concern is that RINOs like Tillis can jam up President Trump and his agenda. So, the question is, as I said in my comment, is this worthwhile. What I have suggested is that President Trump staunch the flow of red-ink by taking away the rebuilding of the Fed HQ. Powell and his lackeys should have,no further input into the rebuilding effort
Only if the rest of the committee refuse to proceed to vote any nominee out of committee despite his stance and then if the remaining majority refuses to vote to confirm.
Almost all of the ‘one man stands’ theatrics can be overturned by a majority vote.
That said I don’t think this action v Powell is very timely. His term as chair end in May and he could remain as a Fed Gov until ’28. IMO June would have been better timing than January though I can see arguments to do it now not June due to midterm optics.

I don’t know if Powell should be investigated but 2.5B for renovation seems kind of pricey. Tillis should not be against any investigation.
The investigation is not about the billions, but about why/if/when Powell made false statements to Congress.
If he didn’t no harm, but Tillis and the rest of the swamp cannot permit any erosion of their invulnerability. Imagine what howls they would put up if an audit of the Fed were pending.

I don’t get it. Powell is out in May and there will be a new chairman then. No matter what any investigation finds it will be way after May. What is the upside of doing this now? Trump has a huge negative aura now because of a lot of controversial issues so why add this to the pile? I know he gets 98% negative coverage by the msm but why give them even more when this is not going to change anything in his agenda? It’s like whenhe said after the Venezuela attack, “We’re going to run Venezuela”. Why did he say that? No, we’re not going to run it and by saying it he took a great job and added baggage to it. Now he has to contend with this moron over a silly thing that should have never happened.

Powell’s term as Chair of Fed Reserve ends in May but he remains a Fed Governor until ’28. Personally I can the argument to wait till June to drop this but doing it now gets the media feeding frenzy mostly out of the way in Jan v waiting till June and much closer to midterm elections.
