Democrats in Virginia must be worried about Abigail Spanberger’s chances in the governor’s race, because they’ve brought out the big guns. Obama recently posted a video of himself endorsing Spanberger.
Since the debate, Republican Winsome Earle-Sears has closed the polling gap. The controversial and violent comments of Spanberger’s fellow Democrat Jay Jones also hurt their party’s chances.
It’s important to note that Obama’s words didn’t do much for Kamala Harris in 2024.
NBC News in Washington reports:
Obama endorses Abigail Spanberger in Virginia’s race for governorFormer President Barack Obama is endorsing Democratic former Rep. Abigail Spanberger in the Virginia governor’s race and starring in two new digital ads for her campaign.”Virginia’s elections are some of the most important in the country this year,” Obama says in both ads, shared first with NBC News, which focus on the economy and abortion rights. He also says in both ads, “Every vote counts.”Virginia is one of two states, along with New Jersey, holding governor’s races this year. One year after the 2024 election, both races will be closely watched as indicators of how voters are responding to President Donald Trump and where the political winds are blowing ahead of the 2026 midterms elections.Trump has not yet stepped into the race with his own endorsement. Spanberger is running against Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.
See below:
If elected, Winsome Sears would be the first black woman governor of Virginia. You would think something like that would be important to Barack Obama, but Sears is a Republican so she doesn’t count, apparently.
It’s also surprising to see Obama throwing his political capital around. If Spanberger comes up short, Obama will have endorsed another loser. At what point does his endorsement become worthless?
