Texas AG Ken Paxton Will Challenge Sen. John Cornyn in 2026

“And it’s time we have another great senator that will actually stand up and fight for Republican values, fight for the values of the people of Texas, and also support Donald Trump in the areas that he’s focused on…”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on Laura Ingraham’s show that he will challenge Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) in 2026.

Paxton said:

I’m running for US Senate against John Cornyn, who apparently is running again for his fifth term, which would put him in there three decades. It’s definitely time for a change.

In Texas, we have another great US senator Ted Cruz.

And it’s time we have another great senator that will actually stand up and fight for Republican values, fight for the values of the people of Texas, and also support Donald Trump in the areas that he’s focused on in a very significant way and that’s what I plan on doing and I hope that people will go to my website and look at what we’re doing at KenPaxton.com and obviously contribute as well.

Cornyn joined the Senate in 2002. He served as Texas attorney general from 1999 to 2002.

Axios reported that Paxton chose Nick Maddux, the man behind his 2022 campaign, to run his primary campaign.

Axiom consultant Sam Cooper will “lead an outside effort to elect Paxton.”

Being from that district in Texas I have my doubts he has the support to win.

AG Ken Paxton is not my favorite TX politician, he’s got a few issues BUT he would be an order of magnitude better than Cornyn (at least). Paxton has a descent shot, he’s got statewide name recognition and folks know what they’re gonna get with him. Against that the Rinos in TX have a lot of power and money behind them who will use everything they have and some things they invent to protect Cornyn and their preference for the status quo.

Interesting. The rumor I had been hearing was that Cornyn wasn’t going to run again, and that Crenshaw was eyeing a bid to replace him.

Eyepatch McCain is one of the very select few that would be EVEN WORSE than Cornyn.

Crenshaw is a one-eyed bought and paid for RINO

Veterans can be complete asshole sellouts, too. He doesn’t get a pass.

No one is mocking his service in the military, just his service as a politician.

Yeah and unfortunately Crenshaw seems to fit the bill. His response to legislation to limit stock trading by Members of Congress was very underwhelming. He has one Heck of a rate of return, better than most pro fund managers …. just like Pelosi which tells me what I need to know.

I LOVE Paxton

He has my vote and he has my trust

Let’s go! Primary the spineless in red states and send a message to all of them…

… I can take a RINO from Maine or other bluish – purple state

    But not deep red.

I’m 100% against Cornyn, so I am on Team K-PAX

HUGE fan.

Don’t live in TX though, but unfortunately my parents do. On a visit to them a few years ago, first thing I see is a Beto sign on their front lawn…

I saw a report a week ago on a poll that put Paxton way ahead of Cornyn. I don’t know how valid it was. (Don’t recall who did the poll)

Having followed and worked in Texas politics for over 40 years, my prediction is that this race will boil down to one question: who will Trump endorse?

Cornyn knows this, and remembers how conservative populist Cruz destroyed the GOP-e’s preferred candidate (then Lt. Gov. Dewhurst) in Cruz’s first GOP primary race. So Cornyn will be going out of his way to be 100% in synch with the White House, as well as to collect as many favors from it as he possibly can from Trump.

Trump also will know this, and so the master negotiator will put the squeeze on Cornyn to deliver for him on critical issues. If Cornyn proves himself to be a loyal soldier, look for Trump to offer Paxton some sort of consolation prize for dropping out.

But if Cornyn reverts to his Beltway Creature mode (e.g., getting suckered by the Dems into supporting their gun control initiatives) and/or incurs the wrath of PDT, Trump endorsing Paxton would seal Cornyn’s fate.

Cornyn is somewhat anti-2d Amendment, a pretty boy career politician who seldom shows up except for photo-ops.
