41.2% of Vienna Students Are Muslim: ‘No Longer Immigration,’ But ‘Displacement’

Unchecked immigration has dramatically reshaped the demographics of Vienna’s classrooms. According to newly released data from the City Council of Vienna for the 2024–2025 academic year, Muslim students now represent 41.2% of the population across primary, secondary, and vocational schools—making them the largest single religious group. By comparison, just 34.5% of students identify as Christian (including 17.5% Catholic and 14.5% Orthodox), while 23% report no religious affiliation.

[In the previous academic year, 39.4% of students were Muslim.]

This significant demographic shift should serve as a wake-up call for Austrians. If current trends continue, the nation may face a profound cultural transformation, with serious implications for its identity and future.

The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), a right-wing populist party that has recently surged in popularity amid a broader conservative wave across Europe, has sounded the alarm.

In response to the latest data, Hannes Amesbauer, security spokesman for the FPÖ, said, “Austrians will soon be strangers in their own country.”

FPÖ National Council member Maximilian Weinzierl, the party’s youth spokesman, took it even further:

What we as the FPÖ have been warning about for decades, but which was always dismissed as right-wing scaremongering, is now reality: Immigration has completely overrun our country. … 41.2 percent of Muslim students – that’s no longer a minority, that’s the new majority. And it’s not just that Austrian children have become a minority in schools. Even together with other Christian European migrants, they are fewer than non-European Muslims. This is the direct result of replacement migration, asylum abuse, and the denial of reality by the SPÖ, ÖVP, and Greens.

In more and more school classes, German is a second language, and our values ​​are becoming increasingly secondary. Our children are being marginalized by migrants. This is no longer immigration, this is displacement.

According to the local media outlet, Vienna Online, “studies show that Muslim youths in Vienna are not only significantly more religious on average, but they also increasingly hold derogatory attitudes. Observed are, for example, antisemitism, LGBTIQ hostility, or a rejection of gender equality.”

Bettina Emmerling, Vienna’s City Councillor for Education and a member of NEOS (the New Austria and Liberal Forum, a liberal political party), offered what many may view as a tone-deaf response to these growing challenges.

She acknowledged that “no one in Vienna should live their life according to the fundamentalist interpretation of religious texts that are hostile to women, minorities, the state, or democracy.”

Nevertheless, Emmerling appears to believe that these deeply rooted issues can be resolved by the addition of a mandatory class to the curriculum. “In light of these developments,” she said, “there is a greater need than ever for a compulsory joint subject, ‘Living in a Democracy,’ for all children starting from primary school. Democracy, values, and ethics education must take place on a common foundation.”

Somehow, I think that few will be surprised when Emmerling’s proposed “solution” proves to be woefully inadequate.

Although liberal politicians within the Austrian government maintain that students will eventually learn to coexist peacefully despite their differences, Remix News reports that tensions inside the schools are on the rise. The outlet notes that “Vienna’s teachers are resigning en masse due to growing violence and harassment in schools.”

Thomas Krebs, a representative of the local teachers’ union, told Remix, “On one peak day, I even received 20 reports of staff terminating their contracts for the coming school year.”

Asked why so many teachers are resigning, Krebs pointed to the government’s failure to enforce basic requirements for integration. He criticized authorities for allowing students to enter the school system without even minimal proficiency in the German language, and for their unwillingness to confront violence, extremism, and misogyny in the classrooms.

Despite these unresolved challenges, Krebs said the government appears more focused on expanding capacity than addressing root problems. They are in such a “rush to make space for more newcomers,” he said.

“They can think of nothing better to do than to plow up the last green spaces and sports facilities for schools with excavators and construction equipment and to pave them over with containers and huge extensions without any real plan.”

Evelyn Kometter, chairwoman of Austria’s national umbrella organization for parents’ associations, has been fielding a growing number of complaints from concerned parents. She offered insight into the challenges posed by the influx of new students lacking basic German language skills: “The teacher has to repeat a sentence 10 to 12 times until it is finally understood. But by then, two-thirds of the lesson is already over.”

Kometter told of a call she received a call from “a mother whose son is in a class with 22 students — only three of whom can speak German. The teacher is not taken seriously and is not understood.”

It’s likely that similar scenes are playing out in classrooms across the continent. The liberal tendency to allow and even encourage unchecked immigration has claimed yet another casualty: the education of Europe’s youth.
