Mufid Fawaz Alkhader Charged After Allegedly Firing Gun Outside of Albany, NY, Synagogue

He allegedly told ATF agents that “events in the Middle East have impacted him.”

Mufid Fawaz Alkhader, 28, faces charges of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person after allegedly firing a gun at Temple Israel synagogue in Albany, NY.

Alkhader allegedly said he smoked “marijuana regularly when he was being interviewed by the members of a federal task force following his arrest.”

Law enforcement sources do not know if Alkhader will face state charges even though the shooting involved a shotgun.

A federal statute does not allow a regular user of narcotics to possess a firearm (right, Hunter Biden?!).

New York legalized marijuana “but it remains a Schedule 1 prohibited narcotic under the federal Controlled Substances Act.”

From The Times-Union:

Mufid Fawaz Alkhader, a U.S. citizen who was born in Iraq, allegedly told members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco & Explosives task force that “events in the Middle East have impacted him,” according to a criminal complaint filed by an Albany detective who is a member of the ATF task force.

Alkhader, a resident of Schenectady, allegedly shouted “Free Palestine” during the incident, according to city police and a person briefed on the matter. It’s unclear whether he said that while being arrested or when he fired the weapon — or both.

The criminal complaint indicates that Alkhader had waived his Miranda rights and agreed to speak with law enforcement officers on Thursday after he was taken into custody and brought to the Albany Police Department.

The staff noticed the armed man outside the building. They immediately placed the building on lockdown, including an early childhood center filled with small children.

The suspect did not shoot anyone or damage the buildings.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said: “I have spoken to the rabbi at Temple Israel and assured her the state will do everything in our power to restore the sense of security her community needs.”

The police and FBI have chosen to investigate the shooting as a potential hate crime.

But it was only a shotgun, and he fired into the air, so Biden endorses this action.

(My word, does that sound as crazy written out as it did in my head?)

Wait. I thought one was supposed to fire the shotgun through doors.

LeftWingLock in reply to GWB. | December 8, 2023 at 1:47 pm

10 minutes and 2 shots fired into the air.

    Sounds “mostly peaceful” to me.

What goes up then comes down. Very careless. Mufid Fawaz Alkhader is an example of why naturalization should be conditional foe at least 2 and maybe 4 generations. Any serious crimes and the whole family gets broomed.

Nope! It wasn’t a double barrel shotgun, Joe’s preferred weapon of choice

I guess context matters, like genocide, at least if one has an Ivy league education.

even though the shooting involved a shotgun
Ummmm, my previous comment was a joke. Why would the state not charge him because it was “just” a shotgun? I’m pretty certain there’s reckless endangerment (where did that shot/slug go?), illegal discharge of a weapon (usually “within city limits”), threatening behavior (it clearly intimidated the folks in the center), disorderly conduct, etc. On top of which it’s not legal in NY to be wandering about with a loaded firearm, in general.

If they don’t bring state/local charges, then they’ve (again) abdicated their duty.

Depends… if bird shot then the excuse is “no birds were hurt”: On a serious note, at close range a shotgun is far more formidable than a rifle or handgun.

Partner of mine once owned a lodge that had a bear problem. Local US Forest Service Officer recommended “pain therapy” with bird shot to the rump of the bear. Next time the bear showed up he shot the bear…. which immediately dropped dead. He called the officer and when the startled guy asked what he used… being unaccustomed to ammo… he said that the label said B..B..something and “00”. The lodge customers were immediately split into two groups… one pitying the bear and the other whooping it up that it got what it deserved.

A shotgun with 00 buckshot under those conditions is my choice for self defense. With a 10 round mag. I have been tempted to get the drum mag, though that would only be needed if a mob was rushing someone. It seems like ten rounds and 2.3 people dropping with each round would turn around a stampede.

Is it true that a single 00 pellet is the size of a.30 caliber bullet? How many of those in a shell?

oo buck shot is 0.33 inches diameter and 9 fit into a standard 12 gauge shell with standard wad. Defensive loads can be No.1. More pellets … less penetration of walls and such. When faced with short range perps….. the one with the shotgun is shot first. Rifle second and handgun 3rd.

By the way… the newest gun control bill is authored by Hank “Guam will tip over” Johnson. In the bill, flints are considered “accoutrements” to the firearms …historically. More like hysterically…. If one told General Washington that the soldiers were using Accoutrement Lock firearms, one would be sent packing to the British to aid the American cause. Since he is dense enough… someone else is writing the bill for him for fear it would tip over.

Spoiler alert: The country is in grave danger from tipping over because of reps like Johnson.

Direct answers are as A-bob said…

It’s like Brandon’s impllication that shotguns are somehow “safer” than other guns is nonsense: A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and malarkey,

Any given gun is more or less effective depending on the circumstances. The “context” one might say. The notion that a shotgun is always the best, or even sufficient option is just as wrong as thinking them “safer.”

I haven’t heard from rashida tlaib yet.

But but but… biden said that ultra-maga white nationalists were the greatest terrorist threat to americans??

Just follow the French dhimmis’ reaction to any act of Muslim terrorism — they characterize it as the product of alleged “mental illness.:

Considering recent, and for that matter historical Muslin conduct, insert shotgun and blame it for resulting damage.

To be sure, the most important words in this indictment are not “synagogue” or even “Fawaz,” but “gun” and “New York.”

AF_Chief_Master_Sgt | December 8, 2023 at 2:04 pm

I thought for sure the shooter was a cisgender white male Christian. According to liberals, that is the description of all neo-NAZI murderers.

He actually sounds a little off his rocker. He easily could have fired at the building but didn’t.

It seems the left should be bearing some responsibility here. maybe we need to monitor every leftist and if they have ever been in Albany they need to be arrested.

Sounds to me like protected speech by a member of an oppressed group.

Mufid Fawaz Alkhader, a U.S. citizen who was born in Iraq,

Hmmm … I think I see the problem, here …

Subotai Bahadur | December 8, 2023 at 6:38 pm

I admit that I am surprised that he was actually charged in New York. I suspect we have a coming plea bargain that will let him off with probation.

“Alkhader allegedly said he smoked “marijuana regularly when he was being interviewed by the members of a federal task force following his arrest.”
Why didn’t the interviewers stop him?
That has to be the worst written sentence I’ve seen this week. Including the punctuation, which only makes it worse.
