Just Stop Oil Protestors Attacks 400-Year-Old Painting in London’s National Gallery

Morons.

Two Stop Oil supporters, identified as Hanan and Harrison, took hammers to the 400-year-old painting Rokeby Venus.

A suffragette once slashed the Diego Valázquez painting in 1914.

Suffragettes were the women in the early 1900s who demanded the UK give women the right to vote. Emmeline Pankhurst organized the suffragette movement.

Anyway.

Hanan and Harrison screeched at those walking the gallery: “Women did not get the vote by voting; it is time for deeds not words. It is time to Just Stop Oil. Politics is failing us. It failed women in 1914 and it is failing us now. New oil and gas will kill millions. If we love art, if we love life, if we love our families we must Just Stop Oil.”

Somehow, fighting for a fundamental human right is the same as stopping oil. No, I’m not justifying the suffragette ruining a painting. I just don’t see how it’s the same.

Then, the two people had to invoke Pankhurst and the women who fought for equality:

“Emmeline Pankhurst said: you have to make more noise than anybody else, you have to make yourself more obtrusive than anybody else, you have to fill all the papers more than anybody else.”

“The suffragettes are proof these methods work to achieve social change. That is why we have taken this action today. New oil will destroy everything we love. I do not want to be here, but I cannot continue to see this government fail all of us.”

Yeah, no. Not the same thing.

Mary Richardson took a knife to the painting in 1914 to protest Pankhurst’s imprisonment.

Police arrested Pankhurst in May 1914 while trying to give King George V a petition at Buckingham Palace.

You would also think the National Gallery would instill security. In October 2022, two Just Stop Oil threw soup on Van Gogh’s Sunflowers painting in the gallery.

Moral degenerates. One year without any benefits of fossil fuel. Then let’s see what they say.

Round them up and put them on a desert island where they can live oil-free and leave the rest of us alone.

Also, I wonder if they think that oil paintings are done with petroleum when they’re done with linseed oil.

Louis K. Bonham | November 6, 2023 at 1:20 pm

This is a case where a good old fashioned Singapore-style caning of the miscreants would probably work wonders.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | November 6, 2023 at 1:24 pm

New oil and gas will kill millions.

LOL.

Oil and gas are much of the reason that the world is able to sustain 8 billion people (with ease). Without oil and gas pretty much half of humanity would starve and freeze to death, a billion more would be forced to move from hot environments that can no longer be cooled cheaply and efficiently, and much of the modern world (everything involving petro-chemicals, which is pretty much everything) would disappear and could not really be replaced by anything.

If these self-hating, nihilistic retards really wanted to help the world they would just kill themselves.

But, these people believe they can eliminate the foundations of Western Civilization in both the physical realm and in the moral realm and civilization will stand just fine. They believe a Year Zero won’t have any catastrophic consequences – no matter how complete it is.

Also, I think nihilistic retards should sue you for defamation for smearing them with Progressivism.

How did that female vote turn out? It brought us Obama and every other left wing whacko imaginable. Thanks, gals.

Greta says how dare you?

Lock up the idiots.

I certainly hope that there was a layer of protection that prevented the artwork from being damaged.

LibraryGryffon | November 6, 2023 at 2:18 pm

I like the idea of forcing them to live without any petroleum or other fossil fuel based products or services for the next 5 years.

Just as all the trans and gay pro-Hamas protesters should be sent to Tehran or Damascus for a year. Though I doubt many would live long enough to come home.

“…it is time for deeds not words…”

Okay, you first. Travel only on foot and quit using plastics entirely.

Until you do that, shut up.

Fortunately (sigh of relief) the Hunter Biden Masterpieces were securely protected so that no harm came to them.

Where were the security officers?

I can understand these two criminals having the time to damage the painting, but why were they granted enough time to finish their BS speeches?

This seems to be a thing now: let them do their harm (to stuff locked behind bulletproof glass) then let them speechify, then arrest.

It’s pretty clear it’s because the gov’ts (and all the museum staff) are all captured by Progressives and actually agree with the vandals.

A four hundred year old painting is going to be damaged if someone hammers the glazing. It won’t be as severe as someone slashing it with a knife but there will be damage. I wish the spectators in the gallery had picked up those hammers and done a little performative art on the faces of those protesters. Until they receive a punishment that is brutal enough to give them pause, they won’t quit.

        they won’t quit
Because they are on a religious crusade, and have the conviction of their (not really good) morals behind which to stand.

Concise in reply to ChrisPeters. | November 6, 2023 at 5:10 pm

Here’s a thought. How about just ejecting anyone wearing a “Just Stop Oil” shirt? I know these ignorant little punks probably concealed the slogans when entering (I hope the museum is not that stupid) but when they do change outfits, which would be before they have their violent tantrums, throw their asses out.

ChrisPeters in reply to Concise. | November 6, 2023 at 7:29 pm

I’ll go one step further: Prison, or deportation to North Korea.

GravityOpera in reply to Concise. | November 7, 2023 at 4:11 am

That is easily defeated by wearing a sweatshirt or jacket then removing it once inside. They should, of course, make them go through the effort, but it wouldn’t change anything.

Once they take off the outergarment (which Concise actually addresses) you can absolutely nab them at that point and eject them (and ban them).

GravityOpera in reply to GWB. | November 7, 2023 at 1:54 pm

          Oops, I overlooked that.

It would require a lot of security guards throughout the Gallery to be effective though.

These reprobates are no better than the Islamofascist, terrorist thugs who have become exceptionally emboldened, over the past forty years. Violence, destruction and intimidation are all that they no.

Engaging in any positive contributions, ideas or physical works is beyond their abilities.

I have two thoughts about this.

1) Just stop oil means we have to destroy oil paintings?????

2) What really offends them is that this painting is a thing of beauty and they’re not.

I’d like to know if they get any real jail time for this. Otherwise I can see it happening again with other art works. Best not to allow anyone with large provocative writing on T-shirts near valuable art.

When smaller scale vandalism is ignored or minimized then these bad actors become emboldened to commit larger, more dangerous, more disruptive acts of vandalism. Maintaining a civil society requires very swift and very harsh punishment for those who choose to be uncivil.

“Emmeline Pankhurst said: you have to make more noise than anybody else, you have to make yourself more obtrusive than anybody else, you have to fill all the papers more than anybody else.”

The only civilized counteroffer is to ensure they fill the prisons more than anybody else.

CommoChief in reply to henrybowman. | November 6, 2023 at 6:30 pm

IMO the answer to the ‘squeaky wheel’ strategy isn’t to provide grease but to remove the wheel and toss it into the trash heap.

I assume they walked there, didn’t take a bus, didn’t bath in hot water or heat last meal but by a wood fire.
I crack myself up sometimes

These are the same folks sitting in the middle of the road blocking traffic, right?
The same ones who shriek in shock and outrage when vehicles don’t in fact stop?
They play by their own rules, but demand everyone else be civilized.
They are not morons. They are communist/fascist thugs, and they must be stopped. STOPPED.

So, not art lovers I take it?

How is it that no one stopped them? Did everyone just stand there with their thumbs up their asses?

venril in reply to venril. | November 6, 2023 at 5:38 pm

Bystanders who claim to love art must stop being simply sheep and stand up to them actively. They should have been tackled the moment they started wrestling with their bags

Concise in reply to venril. | November 6, 2023 at 5:41 pm

Thumbs up their arses. It is the UK.

GWB in reply to venril. | November 7, 2023 at 8:34 am

    Evidently, yes.
Remember that the vast number of people are simply sheep who couldn’t intervene if their life depended on it. They are psychologically incapable.
The rest all agreed with their ideology and were thinking “Well, it’s protected.” (Which is a variation of the “They’ve got insurance.”)

Free State Paul in reply to venril. | November 7, 2023 at 10:50 am

Remember this happened in Great Britain where you DON’T have the right to self-defense or the defense of other people, much less the right to defend inanimate objects.

Could someone just maim this idiots? A good blindsiding and promptly leaving the area. The problem is that the wanker cops police everything but crime.

CommoChief in reply to alaskabob. | November 6, 2023 at 8:02 pm

Lots of potential costs involved to do that.
    1. Risk of injury from these clowns, probably slight but not certainly not zero
    2. If you curb stomp them then you are getting arrested
    3. If you delivered an especially thorough curb stomping these clowns are going to the hospital for injuries

So now you gotta bail yourself out, pay your own medical bills, probably gone have to pay the clowns medical bills. Gotta pay an attorney to fight the criminal case that, lets face it, is gonna be brought. Gotta pay an attorney to fight the civil case from these clowns suing you.

That’s at least $10K -$25K right there just for early stages of representation. More if these cases go to trial +appeals. Lose the civil case and now come punitive damages. This curb stomping gonna potentially run up a huge tab that you gonna be forced to come up with and potentially jail time.

Then there’s the indirect costs like your employer firing you and/or your spouse/children being targeted by allied crazies over the this. If it was 1954, heck if it was 1994 I would say sire go for it. In today’s climate? Nah, bad ROI.

Sanddog in reply to CommoChief. | November 6, 2023 at 9:51 pm

Just cover your face like antifa. The left will assume the beating you’re delivering is justified and no one will call the cops.

CommoChief in reply to Sanddog. | November 6, 2023 at 10:25 pm

IMO that won’t fly for those not expressing support of the ‘approved narrative’ b/c at present some pigs are more equal than others.

Have no doubt if I would have been there and attacked these 2 Marxists I would be one locked up. If these museums want to go along and see their collections destroyed nothing I can do about it.
My book glue yourself to one of these, stay there until glue, skin or time ends it, I’ll watch.

Anacleto Mitraglia | November 7, 2023 at 5:59 am

Do they realize it’s an OIL painting?
