New York Gov. Hochul Says the Border is ‘Too Open Right Now,’ Tries to Deflect Blame to GOP

“People coming from all over the world are finding their way through, simply saying they need asylum, and the majority of them seem to be ending up in the streets of New York and that is a real problem for New York City.”

In all honesty, the Democrats and Republicans share the blame regarding immigration.

As of right now, President Joe Biden takes the majority of the blame after all the promises he made on the 2020 campaign trail.

Why am I saying this? Because New York Gov. Kathy Hochul finally admitted we have a border crisis but also invoked the GOP to solve the problem (emphasis mine):

MARGARET BRENNAN: But it’s stunning that a trillion dollars is not is not sufficient. nationally. I want to ask you as well about the other crisis you’ve been raising alarms about not is the strain due to migrants. There were no border provisions in this congressional bill that just passed. And I know you’ve said you’ve had to manage without help from Washington. What would you ask Congress to get done in the next 45 days?

GOV. HOCHUL: Well, shame on Speaker McCarthy and the Republicans in Congress, including the nine from New York state who are complaining like crazy about the migrants, but refuse to work with President Biden and come up with a sensible border strategy. It can be done. This can be done in a bipartisan way, comprehensive immigration reform–

(CROSSTALK)

MARGARET BRENNAN: –What specifically do you want?

GOV. HOCHUL: Well, we want them to have a limit on who can come across the border. It is too open right now. People coming from all over the world are finding their way through, simply saying they need asylum, and the majority of them seem to be ending up in the streets of New York and that is a real problem for New York City. One hundred and twenty five thousand newly arrived individuals, and we are being taxed. We are always so proud of the fact that New York has the Statue of Liberty in our harbor- harbor. We are one of the most diverse places on earth because of our welcoming nature and our- it’s in our DNA to welcome immigrants. But there has to be some limits in place. And Congress has to put more controls at the border and not in this budget threat, shutdown threat. Talk about eliminating positions for Border Patrol, well, we actually need to double or quadruple those numbers. So get back to work and do your jobs.

Lady, Biden and the Democrats are not doing anything concerning immigration. Biden’s DHS is in charge.

The DHS could do so much more to stop the flow of immigrants without the help of Republicans.

Second, don’t declare yourself a sanctuary city or state. How do you think the small towns along the border have been doing? El Paso, TX, isn’t a small town, but the mayor had to declare an emergency.

Bwahahaha! If only someone would have objected to the open borders and warned us what would happen right?

The schadenfreude…. so powerful it’s painful!

Hey Governor, let us know when it’s bad enough for you to call Biden and tell him to turn off the taps.

….or let us know when it gets so bad that your only solution is another Trump presidency

You do remember Trump didn’t build the wall? He talked about it. He used it as his central campaign issue in ’16 but didn’t do it. In fact when push came to shove and Ryan/McConnell handed Trump a budget without funding for his promised border wall Trump had a binary choice:
      1. Sign the budget as is without funding for the wall
      2. Use his VETO and reject the budget until funding for the promised border wall was put into it

Trump decided option 1 was a better choice. Bad mistake IMO and one he nor his advocates choose to discuss very much.

Then why the hell cant you put the blame where it belongs??? on the asses in congress that WANT illegal immigration!!!!

The simple matter is that these asses in congress have built a cottage industry around illegal immigration and use them to pump up growth in the GDP, just to show how great they are about building the economy, when the truth is, for most of the last 25 years we have been stagnant.

Quit blaming Trump, he tried,, he failed often but at least he tried. None of those other pricks that have been in congress for the last 40 years have done squat but make themselves rich.

Hear!! Hear!! These are the same people who vote for McCarthy and the others who did not do THEIR job when Trump was President, and make sure it got done. We are sick and tired of them lying to us, and then caving to the left every single time. Like now.

CommoChief in reply to starride. | October 2, 2023 at 1:44 pm

I put the blame on those who tell us they will.do X when asking for out vote but after the election don’t do X.

That goes for the GoP wing of the DC establishment as well as Trump. These folks were going to ‘end Obama care’, get tough on illegal immigration but they needed our votes and our $ in order to ‘send more r to DC’.

We did our part, got them a GoP majority in HoR and Senate. Got the outsider Trump in the WH to go with it. Then what happened? The DC establishment once again didn’t do what they said..

But wait, surely the ‘outsider’ Trump, the ‘fighter’ Trump will use every fiber of his being and every oz of the power of his office to force a change? He won’t simply roll over and let Ryan, McConnell, the DC establishment get their way without a fight….would he?

          Unfortunately that’s exactly what happened.

Now if the question was who is probably more committed to getting our open border secured Trump or DC establishment? The answer is Trump. That is true now and it was certainly true when he chose to let Ryan and McConnell roll him on funding the border wall.

Actions matter far more than words. Anyone can promise us anything. The real.proof of commitment to any issue is whether or not that person will deliver on the promise, especially when it is hard to do v walking away and making excuses.

C’mon Chief. You act as if this hasn’t been a problem since the 70’s.

The border has been an open door since I was a child. The problem is, certain groups in this nation want to dissolve our sovereignty and make us a bigger open door.

The problem existed under Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump and now Biden.

The bigger issue is that Trump had a desire to close the border, but both Democrats and Republicans didn’t.

Hell, I couldn’t get my work done if my employees, my supervisors, my advisors, and everyone around me sought to undermine me at every step.

        Neither could you.

But the fact is, while many Americans were OK with illegal immigrants to some degree, under this administration, the flood gates were opened to full blast. So much so that even Democrats are complaining.

So, quit with the Trump is the problem business.

The Congress, and only Congress, makes those laws. And people you voted for failed their job, like they did for the rest of us.

So, the problem rests on your shoulders, my shoulders, and the other voters who have gone through our lives letting politicians make decisions for us that are not good for this nation.

But like other people here, you want to make it Trump, Trump, and only Trump.

You know damned well that the Republicans would have joined with Democrats to override any veto that Trump signed, whether he wanted to or not. The Democrats and the Republicans would have also rubbed Trump’s face in the shït after they overrode his veto.

I am not a Trumpster or whatever derogatory term you guys use for us who voted for Trump. I prefer that Trump move on, and I would prefer DeSantis or someone else to be the nominee. But I won’t vote for a democrat if Trump is the nominee.

But please stop with the Trump blame for this mess. You sound like a Democrat.

You know that in the world we live in, Republicans are bad, Democrats are good, and Independents are stupid. None of which is the reality.

No. I am making the very simple point that we don’t have the border wall that Trump promised and in large part it is b/c Trump didn’t use his VETO to reject the budget which didn’t have funding for the wall.

Y’all can add all the ‘context’ you wish to attempt to soften it (Excuses IMO) but it won’t change the fact that in the key moment Trump blinked and allowed Ryan and McConnell to get their open border policy preferences instead of the voter’s preference to ‘build a big beautiful wall’ like Trump promised in the campaign.

          henrybowman in reply to AF_Chief_Master_Sgt. | October 3, 2023 at 2:38 pm

“The Congress, and only Congress, makes those laws. And people you voted for failed their job, like they did for the rest of us.”

But the laws haven’t changed. They’re still largely the old laws, and if enforced, would still work as well as they did in (say) the Kennedy years.

What has changed is imperial presidential lese majeste. DACA was never even a law — it was an unauthorized presidential program similar to an executive order.

What people constantly overlook is that the president is breaking immigration laws. And nobody is doing crap about it. The legislative branch has very few enforcement powers. And while in the hands of the Corrupt Party (which spans party lines), it can’t even bring those to bear.

Azathoth in reply to CommoChief. | October 2, 2023 at 2:13 pm

What I remember is that Democrats and nevertrumpers in Congress refused to allow the wall to be funded.

So Trump fulfilled his promise in a different way–by enforcing the ‘first safe haven ‘policy and by getting central American countries to abide by it –keeping asylum seekers on the other side of the border.

And guess who had to pay for them?

That’s not ‘what I ‘remember’. That’s what actually happened.

The flow of illegals was massively slowed –by Trump’s actions in the face of nevertrumper and Democrat recalcitrance.

CommoChief in reply to Azathoth. | October 2, 2023 at 2:28 pm

Yes the DC establishment did refuse to fund the border wall. That is part of my point. The important part is what happened next.

If the DC establishment had been in support of building a wall then one should have been built long ago. Well before candidate Trump could use a promise to ‘build a big beautiful wall’ as his central campaign promise.

So going into his term of office as President, Trump already knew the DC establishment didn’t want a border wall. It shouldn’t be any surprise to him or anyone else that they would try and wriggle out funding the construction of border wall.

Then Ryan and McConnell present Trump a budget WITHOUT funding for the border wall. What does Trump do at that point? Does he use his VETO and tell them to pound sand until they put the funding into the budget? Nope, he signs it. He rolled over without a fight on this and I am very tired of folks making all sorts of excuses.

Bottom line is regardless of whether Trump wanted/wants a border wall more that Ryan or McConnell (he did/does, that isn’t the issue here) Trump could have chosen to fight the DC establishment by using his VETO. He didn’t make that choice.

It seems very fair to me that we should all be willing to acknowledge this truth and stop pretending that as President with a VETO that Trump was somehow powerless against the DC establishment.

Well Kathy, just arrange to have the Statue of Liberty relocated off the coast of South Carolina, and your problem is solved. You democrats excel at statue removal.

They know. They just don’t care. She’s doing that for PR purposes.

“. . . shame on Speaker McCarthy and the Republicans in Congress . . . [who] refuse to work with President Biden and come up with a sensible border strategy”

Like a true Democrat. NEVER their fault.

Gov H. wants Republicans to work with Biden on a “sensible border strategy.” Let me translate this Dem-speak: whenever Dems use terms such as “sensible border strategy” or “comprehensive immigration policy” they mean AMNESTY.

Gov H. wants amnesty for all of the illegal immigrants so they have the right to vote. Gov H. knows that people who are dependent on the welfare state will overwhelmingly vote for Dems for the next several generations. Seems like a “sensible border strategy” to me.

Someone finally looked more closely at the Statue of Liberty’s inscription and, sure enough, it said “Give them your….”

New York doesn’t need anymore Democrat voters, so it’s all pain and no gain.

I wasn’t allowed to watch SNL in the early days. One of my friends with an older brother had gotten his hands on a couple of LP of Saturday Night Live sketches so we could listen to them. We were maybe ten so this would have been 1980 or so, back when SNL was actually trying to be funny and succeeding.
