‘DeSantis Will Be Worse Than Trump’ Media Narrative Rides Again

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came out smelling like a rose last month after he racked up some important political victories against wokeism in higher ed, which is likely a big reason why he continues to take incoming fire from the likes of former president and 2024 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump as well as his detractors on the left.

Many of DeSantis’ media/far-left critics evidently still think that painting him as “worse than Trump” is a surefire way of scaring away independents, disaffected Democrats, and supposedly “principled” Republicans in the event DeSantis declares his intention to run for president.

The latest example comes courtesy of The New Republic, which published a piece written by self-described senior defense analyst and former naval aviator Brynn Tannehill, who attacked DeSantis on religious grounds and let us know that DeSantis is a “very right-wing Catholic who wants to remake America as he imagines God wants it to be:”

Donald Trump was and is a lazy, ignorant narcissist. The Florida governor is a smart, motivated, very right-wing Catholic who wants to remake America as he imagines God wants it to be.

Tannehill reiterated her point later in the piece:

DeSantis fully intends to remake America the way he believes God would want it to be, and his knowledge of law and governmental structure allows him to do it on a scale, and with a precision, that Trump could only dream about.

“In reality, DeSantis is pursuing one of the most aggressively authoritarian agendas in the country,” she alleged, citing, among other things, how he allegedly “quietly packed both the Florida Board of Medicine and the New College Board of Trustees with ideological fellow travelers to bend institutions to their will” and him signing the Florida Parental Rights in Education Act into law last year.

Almost every attack Tannehill lobbed at DeSantis was on religious grounds, claiming in a nutshell as so many other anti-DeSantis/anti-GOP presidential candidate pieces have in the past that he’ll send America back to the dark ages.

The attacks especially make sense when you learn that not only is she a left-wing lesbian who has an unsurprising bone to pick with right-wing politicians in general, but that her Twitter timeline is filled with Code Red tweets and retweets about the GOP’s supposed war on the LGBTQ community.

As others noted, however, this has become an all-too-predictable tactic from the media and the left, as they say, this every presidential election cycle, no matter who the viable contenders on the Republican side happen to be:

Yep. If DeSantis does run and wins it all, it will only be a matter of time before The Usual Suspects start banging the “I wish we had Trump back” drum. Bank on it.
