Virologists Alarmed as ‘Bird Flu’ Spreads to Minks and Bears, and Could Soon Jump to Humans

Virologists Alarmed as ‘Bird Flu’ Spreads to Minks and Bears, and Could Soon Jump to Humans

One virologist noted that the “H5N1 strain, detected in Spain, as being similar to one purposely engineered to better infect humans in controversial ‘gain of function’ lab experiments.”

This spring, I noted that the production of eggs in the US plummeted in April as millions of hens were killed during one of the worst-ever outbreaks of avian influenza.

After several months, this potent avian flu (i.e., “bird flu”) returned to the Midwest earlier than authorities expected. The highly pathogenic disease was detected in two commercial turkey flocks in western Minnesota and a hobby flock in Indiana.

Now there are reports that are alarming virologists of its spread to animals, as the jump to humans could soon be next.

To begin with, three young grizzly bears were recently euthanized after they were found suffering from the bird flu after eating infected animals in Montana.

The state’s Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) department said the bears were found near the cities of Augusta, Dupuyer and Kalispell, which surround the Flathead National Forest.

All three bears were observed to be in poor condition, and showed signs of disorientation and partial blindness, among other neurological issues.

The FWP said the animals were put down, while noting that these were the first-ever cases of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus documented in grizzly bears.

Genetic testing on minks in Spain showed that an outbreak of bird flu in a farm in Spain proves the H5N1 strain of flu that is devastating bird flocks can now spread from one infected mammal to another.

The outbreak of H5N1 flu, described in a report in Eurosurveillance on 19 January1, occurred on an American mink (Neovison vison) farm in Carral in October 2022. Genetic sequencing showed that the animals were infected with a new variant of H5N1, which includes genetic material from a strain found in gulls, as well as a genetic change known to increase the ability of some animal-flu viruses to reproduce in mammals.

The new variant puts bird flu in “uncharted territory”, says Wendy Puryear, a virologist at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. Researchers have warned that, without careful precautions, the disease might eventually spread among people.

The strain has already spread to a small number of humans.

But the trend of minimal transmission among humans may not hold, experts warn. Last week the WHO reported that a previously healthy Ecuadorian girl had been hospitalized with the virus.

Just how she contracted the virus is uncertain and under investigation, but poultry her family had recently purchased died without apparent cause.

Legal Insurrection readers will recall when I reported that Chinese researchers created an H7N9 virus that killed 35% of the mice tested. Interestingly, H5N1 bird flu rages and kills nearly 100% of infected birds. And it appears that the virus has also been studied at the infamous institute.

Therefore, it is worrying that one virologist noted that the “H5N1 strain, detected in Spain, is similar to one purposely engineered to better infect humans in controversial ‘gain of function’ lab experiments.”

One virus-tracking scientist described the H5N1 strain, detected in Spain, as being similar to one purposely engineered to better infect humans in controversial ‘gain of function’ lab experiments.

Professor Rupert Beale, an immunology expert at the world-renowned Francis Crick Institute in London, said: ‘We should have vaccine contingency plans already.’

And Professor Isabella Eckerle, a virologist at the University of Geneva’s Centre for Emerging Viral Diseases, called the findings ‘really worrisome’.

Other experts warned that outbreaks among mink could lead to a recombination event — when two viruses switch genetic material to make a new hybrid.

A similar process is thought to have caused the global 2009 swine flu crisis that infected millions across the planet.

It does not appear this wave of avian flu is going away and will wreak havoc for quite some time.

This season’s bird flu outbreak is the worst in U.S. history, having surpassed a 2015 outbreak the CDC once called “arguably the most significant animal health event in U.S. history.” That year, nearly 51 million birds died nationally due to H5N1 and related avian flu viruses. This season’s outbreak is also the worst in U.K. history, with farmers in England ordered to keep their birds indoors as of Nov. 7 in a poultry “lock down” of sorts.

The so-called “R naught” value—or the number of people infected by a single infected person, on average—for COVID initially ranged from 1.5 to 7, and now sits upwards of 12.

The R naught value of H5N1 among birds: “around 100,” according to Chowdhury.

Before the snarky comments, yes. I AM concerned, and worried about my ursine counterparts. I am not a “furry” but DO feel a connection with grizzlies (ursine ones).

As for this bird flu: I am not some Liberty Daily / CTH / CFP nutcase, but still find myself wondering what lab this cae out of, and who will be its Fauci.

I’m sorry but I don’t think that there is any credibility in anything going from the government or funded by the government.

There will never be another disease outbreak where people can trust that it wasn’t their government that created the disease.

For years, I have commented that popular entertainment like The X Files, in which our own government is the villain, was nutritious fodder for instilling a healthy paranoia into the American public.
And for those who refused to learn from the mistakes of others, COVID was introduced, to teach them as well.

Too bad the so-called “experts” burned all of their credibility lying about covid. They can go f*ck themselves.

This is one of the biggest breaking news items in history and certainly related to this topic.

Maybe you should cover it?

What? Can’t you just have the bears and chickens mask up and social distance?

For those who participated in the global gain-of-function mrna experiment, you better hope you were given the control group placebo. The more boosters you received, the more you destroyed your immunity. That is why hospitals are reporting no covid deaths of the unvaccinated. They are ALL vaccinated victims and the death rate is higher the more boosters taken.

This is by far the worst government/industry collusion (aka fascism) case in the history of the world. It took Tucker Carlson and John Solomon 2 days to report it but to their credit, they added to the story with follow-up work. Only Conservative Treehouse and Zero Hedge jumped all over this immediately.

Thank God for people with balls like James O’Keefe and Project Veritas.

That is why hospitals are reporting no covid deaths of the unvaccinated. They are ALL vaccinated victims and the death rate is higher the more boosters taken.

    That is just not true.

How much more will we experience before we turn the tables on them? I started hearing about shady people fiddling with H1N1 in 2012, and not for compassionate results. I figured it was conspiracy nutcase talk then.
Not so much now.

I would imagine that most of the outbreaks of viral disease that we’ve seen in the last several decades were the result of Gain of Function experiments that went global. Fortunately, Governments & Big Pharma haven’t killed us all off yet . . . or did they in March 2020.

2smartforlibs | January 27, 2023 at 9:57 am

When companies like Pfizer get involved it will happen sooner rather than later.

H5N1 is some seriously nasty stuff. For the few humans that have gotten it (does not infect us easily yet) it has about a 60% mortality rate. Makes the Spanish flu look like a cold outbreak. This is old data not just new made up stuff. Old vaccine technology may be ok though.

Not sure what to do except to continue to implement an open border policy just to increase the odds of admitting infected persons into the US..

New joke for an old punchline:
Q: Why don’t you just shut down the border?
A: I could, but we need the eggs!

Otto Kringelein | January 27, 2023 at 10:14 am

The pandemic is over (if it was ever really on), and the monkeypox (sorry, MPox) was a bust. So now they come up with a variant of Avian Flu that might end up infecting humans. Just in time to work up a good panic in the population before the 2024 presidential election. Well, I guess since it worked for democrats in 2020 we’re bound to have a repeat in 2024. They just have to engineer the right virus this time around.

Wanna bet becomes human transmissible before the 2024 election? The COVID dry run worked so well for the Democrats, so why not do it for real in 2023/4?

All the more reason to build the wall. Mexico is famous for bestial brothels.

Donkey shows on the boarder are historically famous in Texas…

      Hey! Equines aren’t susceptible (yet)!
This news puts a crimp in our plans to re-establish the layer flock the damn bobcat slaughtered last winter, but I don’t need to have to worry about my donks too!

I know avian flu can be really bad.
But what if it isn’t nearly as bad as the governments and experts are telling us? What if that 60% mortality is because only 10% of people infected ever get sick enough to report it? Why do we trust anyone generating a panic?
Just asking.

henrybowman in reply to GWB. | January 27, 2023 at 1:16 pm

I can’t imagine how it would be possible for the numbers even to work that way. You’re postulating a disease whose victims either show absolutely no signs of having contracted it and have no ill effects, or show any effect at all and overwhelmingly end up dead. I can’t think of any other disease that works anything like that.

BierceAmbrose | January 27, 2023 at 4:21 pm

This happens. This is a thing that happens.

If only we’d had some practice handling a novel, highly-transmissible respiratory virus. Or known to expect that such things happen.

BierceAmbrose | January 27, 2023 at 4:47 pm

This happens. This is a thing that happens. These people need to be nicer to us.

They blew it before “two weeks to flatten the curve” became three years and counting. They blew it with the quiet part they don’t say out loud any more: “Two weeks to flatten the curve, to stop overwhelming hospitals“.

You run the health system; you insist on running the health system; you insist because it’ll work better if you run it. Being all large and in charge, this is all on you.

Why the hell do we have a hospital system that gets overrun by predictably recurring events?

Why the hell don’t we have a system with a learned response to emerging, transmissible resp viruses, ironically like inoculation(*) trains up a learned response in bods.

Why the hell weren’t you in front of the ‘rona? as it emerged, gettin your system aligned so it wouldn’t collapse?

Three years and counting, and it’s still a Natl emergency says The Big Guy.(**) You’re so smart, why aren’t we done with this?

Here comes another virus, as they do. Why can’t we just ignore it, because we got so much better at dealing with these?

You’re not supposed to getting better at interfering with our lives under cover of some new “emergency.” The point is health stuff interferes with our lives less, bbecause you deal with that for us. It’s like the health system is run for something else.

(*) OK, that was unfair. Obviously, these people don’t know how inoculations work.

(**) There’s no emergency, so the emergency-based immigration protocol has to be unwound. But for health-system things, there’s an emergency. It’s like they declare what they have to, to get to do what they want. And what they want is interfering with us, and patronizing other folks.

H5N1 has already spread to humans and it’s been known for at least a decade. An increase in zoonotic transmissibility for this virus is a far greater threat than anything COVID. Paying attention to this SHOULD have been a priority of the Obama admin prior to and during the swine flu scare.

This virus is a really really big deal and could be a global killer if our worst fears come true. I know this will sound a little crazy but….Keep your eyes out and don’t give up your guns. Things can get really bad and make COVID look like an extended staycation.

Good thing I caught the bird flu years ago, now I have natural anti-bodies which last a lifetime unlike artificial “vaccine” immunity.
