NHL Caves on Discriminatory Woke Job Fair After Warning From DeSantis Administration

“we do not abide by the woke notion that discrimination should be overlooked if applied in a politically popular manner or against a politically unpopular demographic”

Among the many enduring legacies of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his administration will be their no-nonsense approach to the “woke” dogma of the radical left, whether it be in the public school system, collegiate academia, in government, in banking and the workplace, or wherever.

The most recent example of this occurred last week after the administration got word that the NHL would be hosting a job fair of sorts in early February in Fort Lauderdale.

While there is, of course, nothing inherently wrong with job fairs, there was a big problem with this one: it excluded most white men. The relevant portion of the original posting read as follows:

Participants must be 18 years of age or older, based in the U.S., and identify as female, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and/or a person with a disability. Veterans are also welcome and encouraged to attend.

Gov. DeSantis’ press secretary Bryan Griffin responded accordingly with a statement, warning the NHL against their woke discrimination tactics:

DeSantis’ office had warned the NHL that “discrimination of any sort is not welcome in the state of Florida, and we do not abide by the woke notion that discrimination should be overlooked if applied in a politically popular manner or against a politically unpopular demographic.”

“We are fighting all discrimination in our schools and our workplaces, and we will fight it in publicly accessible places of meeting or activity,” they continued. “We call upon the National Hockey League to immediately remove and denounce the discriminatory prohibitions it has imposed on attendance to the 2023 ‘Pathway to Hockey’ summit.”

Below are the screengrabs of the NHL’s original linked in post and the statement from Griffin:

Former DeSantis press secretary Christina Pushaw, who went on to work on his 2022 reelection campaign team as rapid response director, also responded:

In the “updated” NHL LinkedIn post, the paragraph on “participants” is gone. They told Fox News Digital that the “original wording” of the post was “not accurate”:

In a statement to Fox News Digital, the NHL said the “original wording of the LinkedIn post associated with the event was not accurate.”

“The Pathway to Hockey Summit is an informational and networking event designed to encourage all individuals to consider a career in our game – and, in particular, alert those who might not be familiar with hockey to the opportunities it offers,” the NHL spokesperson said.

The NHL deleted the event posting from its LinkedIn account on Friday night.

In a further clarification, the spokesperson said the event is open to anyone ages 18 and older.

After the NHL backtracked, Griffin invoked a signature phrase of Gov. DeSantis:

In other words, mess with the bull, you get the horns. Disney found this out the hard way, and now the NHL has, too.

Meh, I think we’re celebrating far too soon. First of all, we have the proof (if more was needed) that the NHL a now is irredeemably woke. Hockey is gone. That’s a loss. Also, the walk back was not genuine. The first statement was in fact accurate; they will only be hiring from those groups whether they say so or not. I don’t expect the state to come after them when exactly that happens.

They’ll have a reverse Rooney rule where they’ll interview exactly one white dude, but he’ll never be hired.

Having outed themselves as misandristic, heterophobic, transfacist, Caucasiaphobic, and disablist, should the job fair now fail to hire a regular White male after having been warned about their discrimination they’ve opened themselves up to legal action,

Smoke and mirror show at best. Except for the already employed pro hockey players there is not a big market of people that ice skate if Florida.

If they only put as much effort into “equalizing” the proportions of the NBA, NFL, etc. as they do into the NHL, then they might have something….

Or maybe we should just let people play whatever fracking sport they like and can excel in, and ignore race.

Nahhhh…..

This is what fighting looks like. We need to continue harnessing the power of government whenever we can.

A decade ago Ron DeSantis would have been primaried as a RINO for this.

You don’t say!

Suffice to say that even though the NHL has plenty of other cities to choose from for future all-star games, you can count both Florida teams out of the running for the foreseeable future.

There are plenty of front office and support positions at NHL HQ in New York and within individual teams, from equipment managers to therapists to media to HR. Without looking at what jobs they were advertising, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were tilted more towards the front office side.

That being said, the NHL has a ton of problems, some of which have been going on for years. They’ve over-expanded. There are multiple teams in financial trouble. Pretty much everyone is having attendance issues. In some cases it’s because teams are in cities that don’t care about hockey and shouldn’t have been given teams in the first place (Phoenix being Exhibit A; apologies to any Coyotes fans I have offended). But all over the league you have ticket and concession prices going through the roof, asinine scheduling decisions that pretty much have made long-standing division and conference rivalries dormant, and the season is too long. Even places where you wouldn’t expect empty seats to be a problem are experiencing empty seats. Don’t get me started on the TV contracts.

Finally, hockey is expensive to play, at any age. Checked the prices of equipment lately? Plus, like with football, concerns about head injuries have caused more parents to hesitate about putting their kids in organized hockey.

But who cares about all of those issues when there is virtue-signaling to be had?

Glad I stopped watching the NHL a few years ago.

I had hoped the league would remain sane and avoid the anthem kneeling we had been seeing in other sports leagues, but the players just couldn’t resist virtue signaling.

I have realized something very important about the NHL, NFL, NBA, and MLB: None of them matter. I no longer watch any of them (due to politics or boredom), and my life is just fine, thank you!

Pro hockey teams should be limited to those states which actually have winters cold enough to allow outdoor skating and pond hockey. Hockey in FL or in other tropical states or desert states is unnatural, belonging to affluent suburbanites who use year-round ice arenas.

Now that I got that off my chest, DeSantis is doing all the right things. Campaigning against neo-Marxist social justice and its “wokeness” is what the country needs desperately, and every Republican running for office must join the fight or be cast in to the wilderness as an anti-American coward along with the entire Democratic party.

While we’re at it, let’s de-fund state colleges, forcing them to survive on tuition and endowments, bankrupting them, forcing them to close unless their mission statements exclude the revolutionary social activism component and they do away with DIE policies.

The university is where neo-Marxist woke insanity issues from, and it will not stop until “critical studies” are completely discredited, its professors exposed to everyone as the frauds they are, and they are driven like swine into the same wilderness as their DP and HR bureaucracy minions.

James Lindsay, Chris Rufo, and Governor DeSantis can only do so much, after all.
