Sen. Mike Lee Sounds Alarm About Mitt Romney Helping Evan McMullin in Utah Senate Race

We recently noted that Senator Mitt Romney seems to be working to undermine the effort to reelect his fellow Utah Senator Mike Lee.

Romney has apparently taken a neutral stance on this race because he is friendly with the never-Trump candidate, Evan McMullin. Critics have pointed out that McMullin winning here would be a disaster for Republicans.

Lee is leading the race, but it’s a little closer than many people on the right would like it to be.

The most recent polling has Lee up by 4 points. The Hill reports:

Lee leading McMullin by 4 points in Utah Senate race: pollIncumbent Sen. Mike Lee (R) is leading Independent challenger Evan McMullin by 4 points in the Utah Senate race, according to a new Deseret News-Hinckley Institute of Politics poll. The poll, conducted last week, found that 41 percent of the Utah voters surveyed say they will vote for Lee, while 37 percent say that they will vote for McMullin. Two percent of those surveyed expressed support for Independent American candidate Tommy Williams and 1 percent for Libertarian James Arthur Hansen, while an additional 5 percent said they will write in another name.Meanwhile, 12 percent were undecided on who they would vote for in the upcoming election, which will take place on Nov. 8.

Lee appeared on Tucker Carlson’s show last night, and one of the big takeaways was that he looked concerned.

He told Tucker that McMullin is raising tons of cash from the Democrat fundraising service Act Blue. Tucker even mentioned that some of Mitt Romney’s immediate family members are helping McMullin’s campaign.

Watch a clip below:

If Mitt Romney isn’t going to help here, the National Republican Senatorial Committee would be wise to step in and make up the difference.

If Evan McMullin wins, he will likely caucus with the Democrats and be a thorn in the side of Republicans. The GOP cannot take a single seat for granted, especially with someone who is ideologically no different than Liz Cheney.
